⚡ The Post-Quantum Hardware Buffer Crisis

With NIST finalizing post-quantum cryptography standards (FIPS 203 ML-KEM and FIPS 204 ML-DSA), global financial institutions face an unprecedented physical networking bottleneck:

  • The 128-Byte POS Buffer Constraint: Millions of legacy Point-of-Sale (POS) terminals (Verifone Engage, Ingenico Telium/Tetra), ATM controllers, and ISO 8583 mainframe switches enforce strict 128-byte to 512-byte buffer allocations for security fields (Field 53 Security Related Information, Field 64 MAC).
  • The Cryptographic Payload Explosion: An ML-KEM-768 ciphertext requires 1,088 bytes, and an ML-DSA-65 signature requires 3,293 bytes. Naively transmitting raw post-quantum packets crashes POS memory registers, causes socket fragmentation, and causes systemic terminal clearance blackouts.

quantum-pki-fintech-gateway implements Stateful Hybrid Ephemeral Session Compaction (SHESC): pre-negotiating post-quantum ML-KEM session secrets out-of-band and emitting lightweight 32-byte tokens that drop seamlessly into legacy ISO 8583 Field 53/64 buffers without hardware obsolescence.

🔄 Post-Quantum Cryptographic & ISO 8583 Standards Scope

This standalone gateway implements and enforces modern cryptographic standards:

  • NIST FIPS 203 (ML-KEM): Module-Lattice-Based Key-Encapsulation Mechanism for post-quantum security.
  • ISO 8583 Field 53 & Field 64: Strict compliance with legacy 128-byte security parameter buffer constraints.
  • Hybrid Classical/PQC Negotiation: Seamless fallback between X25519/ECDH and ML-KEM-768.
  • CBOMkit Cryptographic Attestation: CycloneDX 1.6 Cryptographic Bill of Materials generation for audit readiness.

💎 Open Core vs. Commercial Enterprise Layers
