The reader antenna is modelled as the square trace a real PN532 board actually uses (not a circle) — the red sprite is the board itself, sized and shaped to match. The donut is an iso-surface: it traces the boundary where coupling equals your read threshold. If it looks like a filled-in blob rather than a ring with a visible hole, that's not a bug in the physics — it means even the weakest interior spot (the dead centre of the loop, farthest from the copper) still clears your threshold. Raise the threshold (or lower the power) until a hole actually opens up: that hole is the true weak spot, and it sits at the geometric centre — coupling is usually strongest right at the trace itself, not in the middle of the board. So placing the tag flush and centred works fine at healthy power, but if you're marginal, nudging it toward the copper outline rather than dead-centre can help. The thin lines threading through the donut are the coil's actual magnetic field lines (Biot–Savart around the square loop) — the same closed loops, split by colour where they cross to the housing side (amber) vs. the tag side (cyan). The badge next to the tag is your live read estimate — drag the tag around until it goes green. Turn on 2nd reader to test two PN532 modules facing each other: the field lines and both donuts are recomputed from the two coils' combined field, so you can see where they cancel or reinforce as you change the spacing between them. A second chip also appears, always exactly 58.65 mm from the first along the core — a fixed physical distance that does not stretch when you move reader 2 — each with its own live read badge, so you can tell whether one, both, or neither is likely to read.

Model. The reader antenna is simulated as a rounded-square current loop — matching the actual square PCB trace on a PN532 module (see the board sprite) rather than a circular approximation. Field is computed by numerically integrating the Biot–Savart law around that square path at any 3D point, and both the field lines and the donut iso-surface are built the same way: a tube swept around the loop's perimeter, not a simple revolved circle. The reader power slider scales the coil's drive current — it grows or shrinks the donut and the coupling/exposure percentages, but never changes the field lines' shape (a stronger field doesn't bend differently, it just reaches farther). The NTAG215 tag is still modelled as a small circular loop (that part of the physics doesn't change shape-to-shape). Coupling and exposure numbers are relative, not calibrated field strengths: your board's real matching network, driver gain, and any metal/ferrite in the housing all shift the real numbers. Use this to reason about geometry — how much front wall you can afford, how close the electronics can sit behind the coil, how much tilt and offset you can tolerate — then confirm with a real tag against the actual housing.
Dual-reader playground. Two facing PN532 loops are summed by superposition (Biot–Savart is linear) with the second loop wound the opposite way in the global frame, since it faces back at the first — this is a reasonable proxy for whether one reader's field reaches into the other's read zone. The Reader cross-talk figure is the flux from reader 2 threading through reader 1's own loop area (and, by reciprocity, the same the other way) — a rough field-side stand-in for how much mutual inductance the two antennas will fight in real life: the higher that number, the more you should expect resonant-frequency drift and Q loss on both readers, not just a weaker read at the tag. This is not a full mutual-inductance/impedance-detuning simulation, though — real coils this close also shift each other's tuning, and if both transmit their 13.56 MHz carrier at the same time, that's a separate RF interference problem this magnetostatic model doesn't touch either. Treat this playground as "does the geometry leave room for the fields to coexist," then verify actual detuning and carrier interference on the bench (e.g. with a network analyzer or by toggling one reader on/off in firmware to compare read rates).
