Summary

Add starrocks as a first-class data source. It reuses the existing MySQL/Doris connector (MySQL wire protocol, FE query port 9030) but transpiles SQL with sqlglot's starrocks dialect instead of doris. Agreed in #2788: separate data source, single PR, Rust side limited to the enum, integration tests on the Python side.

What failure does this repair?

Today StarRocks is connected through doris. Connection, models, joins and cubes work, but SQL is rewritten with the sqlglot doris dialect, which differs from StarRocks. Observed against a live StarRocks cluster with wrenai 0.13.3 and 0.15.0:

Query doris dialect StarRocks
date_trunc('month', d) emitted as DATE_TRUNC(d, 'MONTH'), fails with date_trunc requires first parameter must be a string constant needs DATE_TRUNC('MONTH', d)
array_agg(x) rewritten to COLLECT_LIST(x), fails with No matching function with signature: collect_list(varchar(64)) ARRAY_AGG(x)
group_concat(x) result has doubled separators (a,,b,,c) GROUP_CONCAT(x SEPARATOR ',')

With the starrocks dialect all three return correct results over the same connection and driver. wren context import dbt also fails for dbt-starrocks projects with Unsupported dbt adapter 'starrocks'.

Existing doris behaviour is unchanged.

Changes

  • core/wren: DataSource.starrocks, StarRocksConnectionInfo (same fields as Doris, port 9030), connector factory/registry (same mysql module and extra), field registry, valid dialects, dbt adapter mapping (username / schema as in dbt-starrocks)
  • core/wren-core-base, core/wren-core: DataSource::StarRocks, mapped to the existing MySQLDialect
  • core/wren-mdl/mdl.schema.json: STARROCKS / starrocks
  • docs and just test-starrocks

How is it tested?

  • Unit tests (run in the default jobs): dialect mapping (starrocks vs doris), DATE_TRUNC argument order, connector registry and install extra, connection-info fields, dbt adapter and profile conversion. 156 tests in the affected files pass locally.
  • Integration test core/wren/tests/connectors/test_starrocks.py (testcontainers, starrocks/allin1-ubuntu:3.5.21, marker starrocks): the shared WrenQueryTestSuite plus three StarRocks-specific cases for date_trunc, array_agg and group_concat.

Not verified locally: the integration test has not been run, and the Rust change has not been compiled (no Rust toolchain or Docker on my machine). core/wren depends on the published wren-core-py>=0.8.0, which does not know STARROCKS yet, so the integration test needs a wren-core-py build that includes this change. I would appreciate guidance on how you usually sequence that, and CI output will tell us about any compile or test fixes needed.

Duplicate check

Searched open PRs and issues for "starrocks" in this repository: no existing PR adds a StarRocks data source.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added StarRocks as a supported data source, including connection setup, SQL dialect handling, and dbt target configuration.
    • Added StarRocks connector integration and query coverage.
    • Updated connection and dbt guides to include StarRocks.

StarRocks speaks the MySQL wire protocol, so users currently connect it
through the `doris` data source. That works for plain SELECTs, but SQL is
transpiled with the sqlglot `doris` dialect, which differs from StarRocks:

- DATE_TRUNC is emitted as DATE_TRUNC(d, 'MONTH') instead of
  DATE_TRUNC('MONTH', d)
- ARRAY_AGG becomes COLLECT_LIST, which StarRocks does not have
- GROUP_CONCAT separators are duplicated in results

Add a `starrocks` data source that reuses the MySQL/Doris connector but
transpiles with sqlglot's `starrocks` dialect.

- wren: DataSource.starrocks, StarRocksConnectionInfo (port 9030),
connector factory/registry, field registry, valid dialects
- wren: dbt import maps the `starrocks` adapter (username/schema fields)
- wren-core-base / wren-core: DataSource::StarRocks, MySQL inner dialect
- wren-mdl: add STARROCKS/starrocks to the dataSource enum
- tests: unit tests plus a testcontainers integration test
(`just test-starrocks`) covering the shared query suite and the
  StarRocks-specific dialect cases
- docs

Walkthrough

This change adds StarRocks as a Wren data source. It updates manifest and dialect recognition, Python connection handling, connector routing, and dbt profile conversion. It also adds Docker-backed connector tests and updates development and reference documentation.

Changes

StarRocks support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Data-source and dialect recognition
core/wren-core-base/manifest-macro/src/lib.rs, core/wren-core-base/src/mdl/manifest.rs, core/wren-core/core/src/mdl/dialect/inner_dialect.rs, core/wren-mdl/mdl.schema.json, core/wren/src/wren/context.py, core/wren/tests/unit/test_cte_rewriter.py, docs/core/reference/mdl.md
The manifest and schema accept STARROCKS and starrocks. Manifest parsing and formatting recognize the source, project validation accepts the dialect, and the inner dialect maps StarRocks to MySQLDialect. Tests cover dialect mapping and DATE_TRUNC transpilation.
Connection models and dbt profiles
core/wren/src/wren/model/__init__.py, core/wren/src/wren/model/data_source.py, core/wren/src/wren/model/field_registry.py, core/wren/src/wren/dbt.py, core/wren/tests/unit/test_dbt.py, docs/core/guides/dbt-integration.md
StarRocks connection info inherits Doris connection fields and is included in data-source validation and field registration. The dbt adapter maps to StarRocks, and profile conversion reads host, port, database, user, and optional password. It rejects custom catalogs.
Connector routing and validation
core/wren/src/wren/connector/factory.py, core/wren/src/wren/connector/mysql.py, core/wren/tests/unit/test_connector_factory.py, core/wren/tests/unit/test_mysql_helpers.py, docs/core/guides/connect.md, core/wren/.claude/CLAUDE.md
StarRocks uses the mysql install extra and routes through DorisConnector. Unit tests cover connector registration and connection kwargs. The connector guide and repository connector documentation include StarRocks.
Docker-backed connector tests
core/wren/tests/conftest.py, core/wren/tests/connectors/test_starrocks.py, core/wren/justfile, core/wren/README.md, .github/workflows/wren-ci.yml
A Docker-backed test fixture starts StarRocks, waits for backend readiness, loads test data, and runs shared and StarRocks-specific query tests. The pytest marker, just test-starrocks command, and CI matrix entry are added.

Test StarRocks factory dispatch, not only registry contents.

These assertions pass without calling get_connector, so they cannot detect a failure to pass DataSource.starrocks into create_connector. Mock the module import, call get_connector, and assert the arguments passed downstream. As per coding guidelines, “Tests must exercise the code you changed” and “Call the function; assert on what it returns, or on what it passes downstream.”

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Document the prerequisites for test-starrocks.

After the README’s standard just install, this --no-sync command does not install the optional mysql extra or replace the published wren-core-py binding. The new test imports MySQLdb and requires a binding that recognizes STARROCKS, so Docker alone is insufficient. Add the mysql extra and local-core build prerequisites beside this recipe or in its README command entry.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Use the StarRocks port for a connection URL without a port.

If a StarRocks profile uses connectionUrl: mysql://user@host/database without an explicit port, this route reaches DorisConnector. Its URL helper defaults to port 3306, although the new StarRocks connection path identifies 9030 as the FE query port. The connection then targets the wrong port. Pass the data source into URL handling so the StarRocks default applies.

Carry the StarRocks catalog into the connection profile.

When a dbt target sets a non-default catalog, this conversion drops it and maps only schema to Wren’s database. Wren’s StarRocks connector passes that database to the MySQL connection, which starts in StarRocks’ default_catalog. The imported profile therefore cannot select the dbt target’s catalog; if the schema exists only there, the connection may fail. Carry the catalog into the StarRocks connection configuration and select it in the connector. (docs.starrocks.io)

Thanks for this — the scope matches what we agreed in #2788, and the diff is clean: Rust only touches the enum and dialect mapping, DataSource.starrocks gets the starrocks sqlglot dialect through the existing get_sqlglot_dialect name fallback, and Doris behaviour is unchanged. All CI checks are green on b6e98a2. A few things to address before merge:

0. I ran the integration test locally: it errors at fixture setup as written (blocking)

Setup: macOS arm64, Docker, starrocks/allin1-ubuntu:3.5.21 (arm64 image), wren-core-py built from this branch. Before the fixes below, all 12 tests errored in fixture setup. There were two separate causes:

  1. localhost → Unix socket. testcontainers returns localhost as the host IP when Docker is reached over a Unix socket (as on GitHub's Ubuntu runners). MySQLdb treats host="localhost" as /tmp/mysql.sock, so _connect() fails with (2002, "Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock'") and _wait_until_ready times out after 300 s. The connector itself already rewrites localhost to 127.0.0.1 (_build_mysql_connect_kwargs), but the test helper doesn't.
  2. Readiness race. SHOW BACKENDS reports Alive=true about 2 s before the BE has reported its disk capacity (TotalCapacity=0.000 B). If CREATE TABLE runs inside that window, it fails with Table replication num should be less than or equal to the number of available backends ... backends without enough disk space: [10001]. My local run hit it, and a separate probe measured the window at about 2 s. That is the same as the fixture's 2 s poll interval, so the result depends on timing everywhere, CI included.

With both fixed, all 12 tests pass (about 16 s once the image is cached):

-    kwargs = {"host": host, "port": port, "user": "root", "passwd": ""}
+    kwargs = {"host": "127.0.0.1" if host == "localhost" else host, "port": port, "user": "root", "passwd": ""}
@@ def _wait_until_ready
             alive = columns.index("Alive")
+ cap = columns.index("TotalCapacity")
             rows = cur.fetchall()
- if rows and all(str(r[alive]).lower() == "true" for r in rows):
+ if rows and all(
+                str(r[alive]).lower() == "true" and not str(r[cap]).startswith("0.000")
+ for r in rows
+ ):

I also checked that the three StarRocks-specific tests discriminate. I forced get_sqlglot_dialect(DataSource.starrocks) to return "doris", and every failure from the PR description reproduced against the real server:

  • test_date_trunc_…: date_trunc requires first parameter must be a string constant
  • test_array_agg_…: collect_list appears in the planned SQL
  • test_group_concat_…: 'F,,P,,O,'
  • test_starrocks_uses_its_own_sqlglot_dialect (unit): fails

test_starrocks_date_trunc_argument_order (unit) still passed under the mutation; see item 2.

1. The StarRocks integration test never runs in CI (blocking)

tests/connectors/test_starrocks.py is the only test that proves the claims in the PR description (DATE_TRUNC order, ARRAY_AGG, GROUP_CONCAT against a real server). However, the test-connector matrix in .github/workflows/wren-ci.yml only lists postgres and mysql, so nothing selects -m starrocks. Please add a matrix entry:

          - datasource: starrocks
            extra: mysql
            test_file: tests/connectors/test_starrocks.py
            marker: starrocks

and widen the Install system dependencies for mysqlclient step's condition from matrix.datasource == 'mysql' to matrix.extra == 'mysql'. Without that, mysqlclient has no libmysqlclient-dev to build against.

On your sequencing question: every wren-ci.yml job builds wren-core-py from this branch (maturin build and then uv pip install --reinstall --no-index --find-links ../wren-core-py/target/wheels/). That is why the unit tests already pass against your new Rust enum. With the matrix entry, CI will run the integration test against the right binding with no extra steps.

2. Two unit tests can't catch the regression they're named for

  • test_cte_rewriter.py::test_starrocks_date_trunc_argument_order transpiles read="starrocks", write="starrocks" and never calls Wren code, so it passes even when get_sqlglot_dialect(DataSource.starrocks) returns "doris"; I confirmed this with the mutation above. Make it discriminating: write with get_sqlglot_dialect(DataSource.starrocks), and also assert that the doris output differs (e.g. DATE_TRUNC(d, 'MONTH')).
  • test_connector_factory.py::test_starrocks_uses_mysql_connector_module_and_extra only checks the registry dicts. The behaviour change is in mysql.create_connector (data_source in (DataSource.doris, DataSource.starrocks)), and routing StarRocks to MySqlConnector would run the ANSI_QUOTES init path. Please add a test that patches MySQLdb.connect, calls create_connector(DataSource.starrocks, info) and asserts it returns a DorisConnector.
  • Minor: test_convert_starrocks_profile sets password: secret but doesn't assert it is carried over.

3. dbt profile conversion (core/wren/src/wren/dbt.py:479)

  • Please check how dbt-starrocks handles a non-default catalog. If a profile can target a catalog other than default_catalog, the conversion currently drops it, and Wren would silently query default_catalog.<schema>. Raising a clear error when that field is set is better than connecting to the wrong place. (CodeRabbit raised the same point.)
  • _dbt_type_dialect passes adapter_type="starrocks" through to parse_type, so it uses sqlglot's starrocks dialect. That looks right. I'm only noting that it's intentional, since doris is mapped to mysql there.

4. Nits

  • core/wren/.claude/CLAUDE.md says doris is the module-sharing exception for mysql.py; add starrocks.
  • A portless connectionUrl defaults to 3306 instead of 9030 (CodeRabbit). Doris already behaves this way, so a follow-up is fine.
  • The just test-starrocks README row could mention that it needs the mysql extra.

CI coverage: wren-ci.yml (unit, ui, postgres, mysql), Rust CI (cargo check/test/clippy) and the WASM build ran and passed. Core-py CI triggers on core/wren-core/** but not on core/wren-core-base/**, which is fine here because the base change is an additive enum variant. The remaining gap is item 1.

Address review feedback on the StarRocks data source:

- test fixture: connect to 127.0.0.1 instead of "localhost" (MySQLdb treats
"localhost" as a unix socket), and wait for the BE to report its disk
capacity before creating tables; `Alive=true` shows up about two seconds
  earlier
- CI: add `starrocks` to the wren-ci `test-connector` matrix and install the
mysqlclient system packages for every job that uses the `mysql` extra
- tests: make the DATE_TRUNC dialect test fail when `starrocks` maps to the
  `doris` dialect, test that `get_connector` passes `DataSource.starrocks`
down and that `create_connector` returns a `DorisConnector`, and assert the
password in the dbt profile conversion test
- dbt: refuse a StarRocks profile that targets a catalog other than
`default_catalog` instead of silently querying the default one
- docs: mention StarRocks next to Doris in CLAUDE.md and the `mysql` extra
for `just test-starrocks` in the README

Thank you for the careful review, and for running the integration test locally and sending the diffs. I pushed a524350 that addresses everything below.

0. Integration test errors at fixture setup (blocking)
Fixed both causes, using your diff:

  • _connect() now uses 127.0.0.1 when the host is localhost, the same rewrite the connector does in _build_mysql_connect_kwargs.
  • _wait_until_ready now also waits until TotalCapacity no longer starts with 0.000, so CREATE TABLE can't land in the window where Alive=true but the BE has not reported its disk yet. I added a docstring explaining why.

I could not run the container test on my machine (no Docker available), so I am relying on your local run and on CI for it.

1. The integration test never runs in CI (blocking)
Added the starrocks entry to the test-connector matrix in wren-ci.yml (extra: mysql, tests/connectors/test_starrocks.py, -m starrocks) and widened the mysqlclient system dependencies step to matrix.extra == 'mysql'. Thanks for confirming that CI builds wren-core-py from the branch, that answers my sequencing question.

2. Tests that could not catch the regression

  • test_starrocks_date_trunc_argument_order now transpiles with get_sqlglot_dialect(DataSource.starrocks) and also asserts that the doris dialect gives DATE_TRUNC(d, 'MONTH'). I reproduced your mutation (mapping starrocks to doris): both test_starrocks_uses_its_own_sqlglot_dialect and test_starrocks_date_trunc_argument_order now fail.
  • Added test_get_connector_passes_starrocks_to_create_connector: it calls factory.get_connector(DataSource.starrocks, ...) against a fake connector module and asserts what create_connector receives (and the starrocks dialect set on the result). This also covers CodeRabbit's note about the factory test.
  • Added test_create_connector_routes_starrocks_to_doris_connector: it patches MySQLdb.connect, calls create_connector(DataSource.starrocks, info), asserts a DorisConnector is returned and that no SET sql_mode ... ANSI_QUOTES cursor is used. Routing StarRocks to MySqlConnector makes it fail (checked).
  • test_convert_starrocks_profile now asserts that the password is carried over.

3. dbt profile conversion

  • I checked dbt-starrocks: its profile has a catalog field (default default_catalog; I see it in dbt debug output). Wren's StarRocks connection info has no catalog, so a profile with another catalog would silently query default_catalog. The conversion now raises a DbtLoadError that names the catalog, with a test. If you would rather support catalogs, that could be a follow-up that adds the field to the connection info.
  • Yes, passing adapter_type="starrocks" straight to parse_type is intentional: sqlglot's starrocks dialect is the right one, unlike doris, which is mapped to mysql.

4. Nits

  • CLAUDE.md now lists starrocks next to doris as the module-sharing exception for mysql.py.
  • The README row for just test-starrocks mentions the mysql extra. Since CI now builds the binding from the branch, I did not add more local-build instructions.
  • A connectionUrl without a port still defaults to 3306, like Doris today. I left it for a follow-up so this PR keeps its agreed scope.

Local checks: 159 tests pass in the affected unit test files, and the new tests fail under the mutations above. The remaining ruff findings in those files are already on main.
