Add a check for node input changes that break stored API prompts - #15739
christian-byrne wants to merge 5 commits into
Conversation
Adding a required input to an existing node makes validation reject every saved API-format prompt for that node. An optional input is safe to leave out two ways: with a default in its schema it does not have to be provided, and with no default it is a nullable value whose entry function has to carry the default for the not-connected case. The workflow snapshots every node's input surface on the PR and on the base branch and fails on new required inputs, optional inputs turning required, dropped accepted types, and removed combo options. The 12 nullable inputs that no node can currently run without are allowlisted.

📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughThe PR adds a Python CLI that snapshots node input schemas, compares snapshots for breaking changes, and detects unsafe optional inputs. It adds an allowlist for known exceptions, unit tests for compatibility rules, and a GitHub Actions workflow for pull-request checks. Repository guidance documents required input placement, defaults, and validation rules. 🚥 Pre-merge checks | ✅ 5✅ Passed checks (5 passed)

**: IMPORTANT: Only comment on issues directly introduced by this PR's code changes.
Treat AGENTS.md as mandatory repository policy, not optional style guidance.
Flag PR changes that violate AGENTS.md even when the code is otherwise functional.
In particular, enforce architecture boundaries, dtype/device/memory rules,
interface contracts, import style, no unnecessary try/except blocks, no inline
imports, no outbound internet paths in core ComfyUI, and narrow scoped fixes.
Prefer direct findings over suggestions when a rule is violated. Only ignore
AGENTS.md when it clearly conflicts with a newer explicit maintainer instruction
in the PR.
Do NOT flag pre-existing issues in code that was merely moved, re-indented,
de-indented, or reformatted without logic changes. If code appears in the diff
only due to whitespace or structural reformatting (e.g., removing awith:block),
treat it as unchanged. Contributors should not feel obligated to address
pre-existing issues outside the scope of their contribution.

that explains the bug, performance issue, dtype issue, model-format issue, or
user-facing behavior.
- Change the least amount of files possible. A change that touches many files is
more likely to be a bad change than a good one unless the broader scope is
directly required.

must participate directly in tensor computation.- Avoid unnecessary casts and transfers. Preserve the intended compute dtype,
storage dtype, bias dtype, and original tensor shape metadata.- Model code itself should not perform memory management. Loading, unloading,

Adding an input to an existing node breaks every API-format prompt already saved for it: validation rejects a new required input with
required_input_missing, and an optional input the entry function has no default for passes validation and then raises TypeError. This adds a PR check that snapshots every node's input surface, diffs it against the base branch, and fails on a new required input, an optional input turning required, a dropped accepted type, or a removed combo option. It also checks that optional inputs with no schema default carry one in the entry function. Type comparison is set-based so widening does not trip it, andbreaking-node-changeon a PR skips the job. Related: #11833.The 12 nullable inputs that fail the rule today are allowlisted; the allowlist is a ratchet, so a fixed entry left behind also fails.
The schema-default half of the rule depends on #15740, which fills those inputs in at execution. Until that lands, the 75 optional inputs with a schema default and no default in the entry function still raise TypeError and this check does not flag them.
