Chapter 05 uses abbreviations without spelling them out on first use #279

Description

@accesswatch

Found during the manual visual and plain language check of core task 1 (read a chapter on the website) on 29 October 2026, recorded in admin/ACCESSIBILITY_CORE_FLOWS.md.

Where: Chapter 05: Working with Issues, source docs/05-working-with-issues.md.

What: several abbreviations appear without being spelled out where they are first used on the page:

  • CLI, first in the "On this page" heading "CLI getting-started principles for issue work";
  • ARIA, in the screen reader note near the top ("better ARIA landmark structure");
  • PR, first at line 157 ("file editing and PR work in Chapter 6");
  • WCAG, at line 1033 ("WCAG 2.1 AA compliance").

A learner who has not met these terms has to stop and look them up. Appendix A, the glossary, is not linked from these places.

Severity: low. The page can be used; this is a plain language barrier.

Done when: each abbreviation is spelled out on first use in Chapter 05, for example "command line interface (CLI)", "Accessible Rich Internet Applications (ARIA)", "pull request (PR)" and "Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG)", or linked to its Appendix A entry. Other chapters may have the same pattern and are worth a look while fixing this one.
