Define a custom placeholder

Currently there is no possibility of setting a custom placeholder for the datepicker.

Is it possible to extend the functionality of the DatePicker class to be able to set a custom format as placeholder e.g. dd/mm/yyyy or dd.mm.yyyy instead of --.--.---- or --/--/----?
