Example 1: ADR from Rough Notes

User:

We decided to switch from REST to GraphQL for our mobile app. 
Main reasons: too many roundtrips, overfetching on slow 3G networks.
We considered gRPC but mobile team doesn't have protobuf experience.

## Context

The mobile application currently communicates with the backend via REST APIs.
Two performance issues have been identified on slower networks (3G):

1. **Excessive roundtrips**: Rendering a single screen requires 4-6 sequential
   API calls (user profile, feed, notifications, settings)
2. **Overfetching**: REST endpoints return full resource payloads when the mobile
   client needs only 3-5 fields per resource, wasting bandwidth

## Options Considered

## Decision

## Consequences

- Strongly typed schema serves as living API documentation

### Negative
- Backend team requires 2-3 weeks of GraphQL training
- Must implement query depth limiting and complexity analysis to prevent abuse
- Existing REST clients (web dashboard) continue using REST — two API surfaces to maintain
