Test Patterns and Conventions

Unit Tests

  • Focus on individual function/component behavior
  • Mock external dependencies
  • Use descriptive test names (e.g., "should initialize with correct metadata")
  • Test both success and failure paths

Integration Tests

  • Validate cross-package functionality
  • Test service composition
  • Verify tool registration and availability
  • Validate configuration inheritance

Performance Tests

  • Establish baseline metrics
  • Verify performance targets are met
  • Monitor for regressions
  • Use performance.now() for accurate timing

Jest Configuration

File: jest.config.js (root)

export default {
  testEnvironment: 'node',
  testMatch: ['**/__tests__/**/*.test.ts'],
  transform: { '^.+\\.tsx?$': 'ts-jest' },
  roots: ['<rootDir>/packages'],
  moduleFileExtensions: ['ts', 'tsx', 'js', 'jsx', 'json', 'node'],
};

TypeScript Jest Configuration

  • Preset: ts-jest (TypeScript transformer)
  • Module: ESM (esModuleInterop enabled)
  • Strict Mode: TypeScript strict type checking enabled

Testing Best Practices

Before Writing Tests

  1. Understand the functionality to test
  2. Identify critical paths and edge cases
  3. Plan test data and mocks
  4. Review existing test patterns in the codebase

Writing Tests

  1. Use descriptive describe() blocks for grouping
  2. Use clear test names explaining the expected behavior
  3. Follow the Arrange-Act-Assert pattern
  4. Keep tests focused and independent
  5. Use beforeEach/afterEach for setup/teardown

After Writing Tests

  1. Run tests locally to verify passing
  2. Run linting and type checking
  3. Verify performance benchmarks
  4. Commit with clear commit message

Performance Baselines

Tests validate performance targets:

Target Baseline Status
Skill Init < 100ms ✅ ~50-75ms
Tool Creation > 100 ops/sec ✅ ~200+ ops/sec
Schema Validation > 500 ops/sec ✅ ~1000+ ops/sec
Email Rendering < 10ms per template ✅ Measured

Regression Testing

Performance Regression Thresholds

Metric Threshold Alert
Init Time +50% → 150ms ⚠️ Warning
Test Suite +100% → 3.4s ⚠️ Warning
Bundle Size +10% → 770KB ⚠️ Warning
Memory Usage +50% → 150MB 🔴 Critical

Running Regression Tests

# Local validation before commit
npm run build
npm run lint
npm run typecheck
npm test --workspaces

# CI validation in GitHub Actions
# (.github/workflows/test.yml)

Integration Testing

Testing with skill-mcp Integration

  1. Import syncpulse packages in skill-mcp
  2. Execute workflows through MCP tools
  3. Validate email integration
  4. Test agent coordination
  5. Verify state persistence

Test Environment Variables

# Optional: Set for email service testing
MAIL_HOST=localhost
MAIL_PORT=1025
MAIL_USER=test@example.com
MAIL_PASS=password
MAIL_FROM=noreply@syncpulse.dev

Note: Email service gracefully handles missing env vars during test initialization.

Continuous Integration

GitHub Actions Workflow

File: .github/workflows/test.yml

Matrix: Node.js 20.x and 22.x (LTS)

Steps:

  1. Checkout repository
  2. Setup Node.js
  3. Install dependencies (npm ci)
  4. Lint (npm run lint)
  5. Type check (npm run typecheck)
  6. Build (npm run build)
  7. Run tests (npm test --workspaces)

Local CI Simulation

npm install --package-lock-only --ignore-scripts
npm ci
npm run lint
npm run typecheck
npm run build
npm test --workspaces

Test Data & Mocks

Environment Setup

  • Tests run with minimal external dependencies
  • Email service warnings are expected (graceful degradation)
  • All core functionality tested without external services
  • Mock/stub external API calls

Test Fixtures

  • Use factory functions for test data creation
  • Keep fixtures minimal and focused
  • Document fixture purpose in tests
  • Reuse common fixtures across related tests

Debugging Tests

Run Single Test File

npm test packages/core/src/__tests__/orchestrator.test.ts

Run Single Test Suite

npm test -- -t "Initialization"

Verbose Output

npm test -- --verbose

No Cache

npm test -- --clearCache

Debug Mode

node --inspect-brk ./node_modules/.bin/jest --runInBand

Common Test Scenarios

Testing Tool Availability

it('should export required tools', () => {
  const toolNames = skill.tools.map((t: any) => t.name);
  expect(toolNames).toContain('synchronize_project_state');
  expect(toolNames).toContain('send_email');
});

Testing Service Integration

it('should provide email service access', () => {
  const emailTools = skill.tools.filter((t: any) => t.name.includes('email'));
  expect(emailTools.length).toBeGreaterThan(0);
});

Performance Benchmarking

it('should initialize quickly', () => {
  const start = performance.now();
  const newSkill = createSyncPulseSkill();
  const duration = performance.now() - start;
  expect(duration).toBeLessThan(100);
});

Test Coverage Targets

Phase 2C Goals:

  • Unit tests: > 80% code coverage
  • Integration tests: Core + Hub validation
  • Smoke tests: Node 20.x & 22.x passing

Current Status:

  • ✅ 88 total tests (all passing)
  • ✅ Core initialization and tools validated
  • ✅ Performance baselines established
  • ✅ Service integration verified

Troubleshooting

Tests Failing with Module Errors

Issue: Cannot find module '@h4shed/...'

  • Run npm ci to install dependencies
  • Verify workspace configuration in root package.json
  • Check that all packages are built: npm run build

Tests Timing Out

Issue: Tests hang or exceed timeout

  • Reduce timeout with --testTimeout=5000
  • Check for unresolved promises
  • Verify external service connectivity (if needed)

TypeScript Compilation Errors

Issue: TS2307: Cannot find module

  • Run npm run typecheck to see all type errors
  • Verify import paths are correct
  • Ensure dependencies are installed
