feat: stereo, 48 kHz AAC for phones, CarPlay and AirPods (0.6.1) - #42
Conversation
…change ruff format on every file under src and tests, unused imports removed, the sync import block sorted, an explicit check=False on the ffmpeg subprocess call, logger.exception for the lyrics write failure (same level and traceback as before), one nested if merged, and two test reads through Path.read_text. The 20 blind `except Exception` and the 3 try/except/pass findings are left as they are: narrowing them changes which errors stop the watcher, which is a behaviour decision.
Dependabot flags urllib3 < 2.8.0 in uv.lock (GHSA-vxq7-64xx-v4gw, GHSA-8988-9cw3-xx77, GHSA-gh4c-6fx4-qh6g). It is transitive through syncedlyrics and requests, and the image installs from pyproject.toml, so the floor goes into the project dependencies and the lock moves to 2.8.0.
…ay (0.6.1) Outputs gain channels and max_sample_rate. An aac output defaults to channels: 2 and max_sample_rate: 48000: more than two channels are downmixed with -ac 2, 88.2 and 176.4 kHz drop to 44.1 kHz, 96 and 192 kHz to 48 kHz, and nothing is upsampled or upmixed. Other codecs have no limit unless they set one; 0 turns a limit off. The source is probed with mutagen only when the output has a limit, so ALAC commands are unchanged. Existing AAC files are not rebuilt; the changelog says how to rebuild just the hi-res and multichannel ones.
An Ogg transcoded into an MP3 output as X.mp3 blocked the later X.flac from being encoded there, because nothing could tell that file from a finished FLAC encode. Each output folder now keeps .atw-manifest.json, mapping each output file to its source (path, size, mtime) and kind (encode, copy, transcode). When a lossless source finds its output already made from a lossy source, it re-encodes it. A missing or unreadable manifest means unknown and behaves as before; the orphan pass drops rows whose file is gone; writes are batched (at most every 5 s, and at the end of each sync).

Navigate logical layers of code changes, visualize relationships, and explore their blast radius. 📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughVersion 0.6.1 adds per-output channel and sample-rate limits, plus provenance manifests used during synchronization and cleanup. The update includes tests and documentation for these changes, updates the project version and dependency metadata, and refreshes container image examples. ChangesAudio output limits and provenance
Priority: ➖ Normal Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes Change: Feature Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to AAC sources that already exceed the stereo or 48 kHz limits can still be copied unchanged into the iPhone output, so the main feature of this release does not apply to them. An output edited after it was first created can also be overwritten when a lossless source with the same name arrives. Fix both before merging. Security Architecture ReviewSecurity architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to Output replacement now depends on saved provenance. Atomic publication limits partial-file exposure, and configuration authority remains unchanged. - Around line 185-187: Update the rate-selection loop so its returned rate never
exceeds max_rate, including when repeated halving leaves an odd rate above the
cap; use max_rate as the fallback in that case.
- Line 165: Update the encode-versus-copy decision near portable_limit_args so
lossy AAC sources exceeding the output channel or sample-rate limit are encoded,
while sources within both limits remain on the copy path. Apply the same
decision when force_reencode is set after existing outputs are purged.

- Line 335: The replacement check around `is_lossless` and `_made_from_lossy`
trusts the manifest kind without verifying the current output; record an output
fingerprint when creating or updating the manifest entry, and compare it before
automatically replacing the file. Leave the output untouched when its
fingerprint has changed.

…t manifest rows only for unchanged files From the CodeRabbit review of this branch: a lossy AAC source above the aac output's channel or rate limit is transcoded instead of copied; a 44.1 kHz-family source under a cap below 11.025 kHz falls back to the cap instead of exceeding it; and a manifest row records the output's size and mtime, so a file changed since it was written is never replaced on the row's word.
Problem
The AAC-256 output is back because the iPhone (Amperfy, AirPods, CarPlay) plays through it. The 0.6.0 encoder copied the source's layout into AAC as is, so a 96 kHz FLAC became 96 kHz AAC and a 5.1 FLAC became 6-channel AAC, neither of which portable players handle well. On top of that: Dependabot has three open urllib3 alerts on
uv.lock, the repo carried 37 ruff findings and 15 unformatted files, and an Ogg transcoded into a lossy output asX.mp3blocked a laterX.flacfrom ever being encoded there.Changes
One commit per item:
style:runsruff formatoversrcandtestsand applies the mechanical fixes: unused imports, import order, an explicitcheck=False, logger.exception, one mergedif, andPath.read_textin two tests. There is no behaviour change; the suite passed right after it. 23 findings are left (20BLE001blindexcept Exception, 3S110try/except/pass). Narrowing those changes which errors stop the watcher, so that's a decision for later, not a style fix.fix(deps):addsurllib3>=2.8.0to the project dependencies, because the image installs frompyproject.toml.uv.locknow resolves 2.8.0. This covers GHSA-vxq7-64xx-v4gw, GHSA-8988-9cw3-xx77 and GHSA-gh4c-6fx4-qh6g.feat:adds per-outputchannelsandmax_sample_rate. Anaacoutput defaults tochannels: 2andmax_sample_rate: 48000; every other codec has no limit unless it sets one, and0turns a limit off. More than two channels get-ac 2. 88.2 and 176.4 kHz drop to 44.1 kHz, 96 and 192 kHz to 48 kHz. Nothing is upsampled or upmixed. mutagen probes the source only when the output has a limit, so ALAC commands are byte-for-byte the same. The version is now 0.6.1.fix:adds.atw-manifest.jsonin each output folder, mapping each output file to its source (path, size, mtime) and how it was made (encode, copyortranscode). When a lossless source finds its output was made from a lossy source, it re-encodes it. A missing or unreadable manifest means "unknown" and behaves exactly as before. The orphan pass drops rows whose file is gone. Writes are batched: at most every 5 s, plus once at the end of each sync.Existing AAC files are not rebuilt by the upgrade. The CHANGELOG says so and gives a one-line command that deletes only the AAC files above 48 kHz or 2 channels, so the next periodic sync re-encodes them. I ran that command on sample files: a 96 kHz file, a 5.1 file and a file with an apostrophe in a subfolder were removed, and a 44.1 kHz stereo file was kept.
