Problem

On the real library, 0.6.1's strict decode refuses 9 FLACs that have no clean copy on Soulseek today: Beatsteaks - Hail To The Freaks, Diana Ross & The Supremes - Baby Love, Die Toten Hosen - Tage wie diese and - Wannsee, Julieta Venegas - Limón y sal, Radiohead - High and Dry, Scott McKenzie - San Francisco, Simple Plan Feat. Sean Paul - Summer Paradise, and Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel - Make Me Smile. Refusing them means the phone has no copy of those songs at all. That is worse than the one-frame glitch the old release let through.

Changes

  • The setting. corrupt_source: skip | encode_anyway, either under settings (for every output) or on one output (overrides the global value). The default is skip, which is exactly the 0.6.1 behaviour.
  • What encode_anyway does. The strict run fails and logs the same ERROR lines as today. Then one more encode runs without -xerror and -err_detect crccheck+explode, so ffmpeg conceals the damaged frames. If it works, the copy exists, one WARNING line says it was made from a damaged source, and its manifest row gets kind tolerant. A source that fails even that run stays refused. Timeouts and other non-decode failures get no tolerant run.
  • Failure memory. The source is still remembered as failed, so the strict attempt is not repeated on every scan.
  • Clean replacement (from the CodeRabbit review). A clean replacement has a new size or modification time. That clears the failure memory, and a plain scan now rebuilds the tolerant copy with the strict encode. Only tolerant rows are rebuilt this way.
  • How the caller tells failures apart. atomic_ffmpeg_encode now returns DECODE_ERROR_RC for any failure that printed a decode error, so it can be told from a timeout or a disk error. It takes strict=False for the tolerant run, where only the exit code counts.
  • Release files. Version 0.6.2, CHANGELOG entry, and docs for the setting in docs/configuration.md (a "Damaged sources" section), docs/how-it-works.md and config.example.yaml.

Testing

  • CI ran in python:3.14-slim with FFmpeg 7.1.5: 435 passed, 0 skipped, 97% coverage. Codecov patch is 96.15% and project 96.32%.
  • Both modes:
    • skip runs one strict encode, writes no output, and remembers the source.
    • encode_anyway, set globally or per output, runs one strict encode and exactly one tolerant encode. The tolerant command has no strict flags. The copy is written with manifest kind tolerant, the ERROR is still logged, and exactly one WARNING appears. The source is remembered, and the next scan makes no encode at all.
    • A source that also fails the tolerant run stays refused, with no WARNING. A timeout gets no tolerant run.
  • Real file: a FLAC with 400 flipped bytes, on the local ffmpeg 9 and on 7.1 in CI, gets a tolerant AAC and is remembered as failed.
  • Red controls: every new test failed against a deliberate break, 21 mutations in all, run with bytecode caching off.
  • Ruff: ruff format --check is clean. ruff check still reports the 23 known BLE001/S110 findings and nothing new.

…urce: encode_anyway (0.6.2)

Nine FLACs in the library fail the strict decode and have no clean copy
anywhere, so 0.6.1 leaves the phone with no copy of those songs at all.
The new corrupt_source setting (global under settings, or per output)
keeps "skip" as the default. With "encode_anyway", a decode failure logs
the same ERROR, then encodes once more without -xerror and -err_detect
so ffmpeg conceals the damaged frames; the copy gets one WARNING line
and the manifest kind "tolerant". The source is still remembered as
failed, so the strict attempt is not repeated every scan, and a source
that fails the tolerant run too stays refused.

atomic_ffmpeg_encode now reports any failure that printed a decode
error as DECODE_ERROR_RC, so the caller can tell it from a timeout or a
disk error, and takes strict=False for the tolerant run.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Version 0.6.2 adds a configurable damaged-source policy. The default skips sources that fail strict decoding. The encode_anyway mode retries with FFmpeg error concealment and records successful retries as tolerant. Configuration, encoding, output processing, tests, and release documentation are updated.

Changes

Damaged-source policy

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure corrupt-source modes
src/audio_transcode_watcher/config.py, tests/test_config.py, config.example.yaml, docs/configuration.md
The global corrupt_source mode defaults to skip. Outputs can override the global value. Unsupported values raise ValueError.
Add tolerant FFmpeg execution
src/audio_transcode_watcher/encoder.py, tests/test_encoder.py
The encoder can remove strict decode flags and run in non-strict mode. Tests cover strict decode-error results and non-strict exit-code handling.
Retry damaged sources and record results
src/audio_transcode_watcher/sync.py, tests/test_sync.py, docs/configuration.md, docs/how-it-works.md, CHANGELOG.md, docs/ROADMAP.md, README.md, docs/getting-started.md, config.example.yaml, pyproject.toml, src/audio_transcode_watcher/__init__.py
Output processing retries only strict decode failures when the effective mode is encode_anyway. A successful retry logs a warning and creates a tolerant manifest row. Tests cover retry outcomes and failure memory. Release references and documentation are updated for version 0.6.2.

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 47720

Replacing a damaged source with a clean file can leave the concealed copy in place. Fix the replacement behavior before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 47720

The feature is opt-in and retains bounded execution and atomic output publication. The main design risk is recovery: a previously tolerated output can remain after a clean source becomes available. No introduced security vulnerability was established, but deployment-level exposure remains unverified.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: The new tolerant-output state is not integrated into recovery reconciliation. A changed source mtime clears failure memory, but a non-forced scan still skips an existing tolerant destination instead of replacing it from the clean source. A tolerant transcode from a lossy source also falls outside the manifest kinds recognized for replacement by a later lossless source. This can strand degraded output after source recovery. Watched modification events mitigate the first case by deleting outputs and forcing processing, but do not cover offline changes or ordinary scan reconciliation.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A party able to supply source audio can cause additional decoding of damaged bytes when an operator has enabled encode_anyway. The added path uses the same FFmpeg invocation authority, configured output destinations, and manifest location. Its inspected effects are local decoding and filesystem writes; the process's effective mount, credential, and environment exposure was not supplied.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The tolerance decision comes from validated configuration rather than source metadata. Audio reaches FFmpeg as an argument in a subprocess argument list, without shell execution in the inspected runner. The retry removes strict decode flags but retains the same timeout and atomic publication controls.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Failed tolerant runs use the existing temporary-output cleanup path, while successful runs warn that the copy came from damaged input. Failure memory suppresses repeated strict attempts, and source-processing ownership is released in a finally block. These controls limit repeated work and partial publication but do not reconcile stale tolerant outputs after recovery.

From the CodeRabbit review: a clean replacement cleared the failure memory, but a plain scan still saw the existing tolerant copy and kept it. A tolerant row now carries the source's size and mtime at encode time; when the source no longer matches, the output is rebuilt with the strict encode.
