feat(ScheduledMessages): schedule messages from the composer (REACT-1387) - #3355
Ticket: https://linear.app/stream/issue/REACT-1387
Parent: https://linear.app/stream/issue/REACT-1347
Design: Figma – Scheduled Messages, Web
Users can schedule a message from the composer, either with a quick preset or a custom date and time. This is the only place a scheduled

Offline: shows a notice and disables Schedule until the connection is back. Nothing is queued on web (roadmap D9).
Failure: shows an error notice, keeps the dialog open, and lets the user retry.
Feedback
Success: a toast "Scheduled for {{time}}" with the server's rounded scheduled_at, not the picked time.
Errors: the scheduling errors the composer reports are translated by reason: 114, 115, 116, 117, 118 and 403, with a generic fallback.
scheduled_message_id_taken (119): the composer ID is refreshed, but there is no automatic retry. The first request may have succeeded, so a retry could create a duplicate. Organisation (src/components/ScheduledMessages/)
constants.ts and types.ts hold every constant and type of the folder. The REACT-1386 hook types and SCHEDULE_MESSAGE_CAPABILITY moved there, with unchanged exports.
hooks/ adds useScheduleMessage, useScheduleMessageSubmit, useScheduleTimeForm, useSchedulePresets, useScheduleMessageDialog, useScheduledMessagePreview and useIsConnectionOnline.
One component per file: ScheduleMessageButton, ScheduleMessageMenu, ScheduleMessageMenuHeader, ScheduleMessagePresetButton, ScheduleMessageDialog, ScheduleMessageDialogNotice.
Re-renders and cleanups
Presets are computed only while the menu is open.
Callbacks and form values keep their identity between renders.
No state updates after unmount (useIsMounted).
The focus-return animation frame is cancelled on unmount.
Customisation and i18n
New ComponentContext slots: ScheduleMessageButton (pass null to hide it) and ScheduleMessageDialog.
New icons: IconCalendar and IconChevronUp.
All strings are translated in the 12 locales. timestamp/ScheduledMessage reuses each locale's reminder calendar format.
Tests
Utilities: DST change, month and year rollover, Sunday→Monday, limits, time zones including +5:30 and −5.
Hooks: stable identities, the unmount guard, the animation-frame cleanup.
Components:
when the chevron shows or hides, plus the overrides;
Send still sends immediately;
a preset end to end with scheduled_at and the toast;
119 handling;
every dialog state;
axe checks.
Translators: every error reason.
Compatibility: additive only. Without the capability the composer markup and behaviour are unchanged.
Open (backend):
D4: during a slow-mode cooldown the timer replaces Send, so the chevron is hidden too.
D5: whether show_in_channel is accepted together with scheduled_at.

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added the ability to schedule messages from the composer, with suggested send times or a custom date and time.
Added a message preview, timezone information, and clear notices for scheduling limits, offline status, and submission errors.
Scheduling options respect channel availability and supported message types.
Added localized scheduling controls and messages across supported languages.
Add a calendar icon for date fields and an up-pointing chevron for menus that open
above their trigger. Both use the 20px stroke style of the existing icons and can be
overridden through the ComponentContext icons slots.

Add the folder's constants.ts and types.ts and move the hook types and the
schedule-message capability there. The public exports stay the same.
New pure utilities, each documented and unit tested:
- scheduleTimeBounds: earliest and latest schedule time from the channel limits,
with a one-minute clock-skew buffer, validation and the default custom time
- schedulePresets: tomorrow 09:00, tomorrow 13:00 and next Monday 09:00 in local
time, dropping the Monday preset when tomorrow is Monday
- dateTimeInputValues: convert between dates and native date/time input values
- timeZone: GMT offset label for the "Sent in your time zone" note
- scheduledMessagePreview, scheduledMessageErrors and nativePicker helpers
Refs: REACT-1387
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- useScheduleMessage: schedules the composition, shows a success toast with the
server's rounded time, and refreshes the composer id on scheduled_message_id_taken
without retrying (the first request may have succeeded)
- useScheduleMessageSubmit: dialog submit state, guarded against updates after unmount
- useScheduleTimeForm: date and time field state, validated against the channel limits
- useSchedulePresets: presets computed only while the menu is open
- useScheduleMessageDialog: dialog open state and focus return to the trigger, with the
animation frame cancelled on unmount
- useScheduledMessagePreview and useIsConnectionOnline
Refs: REACT-1387
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Following the Figma web designs:
- ScheduleMessageButton: chevron segment of the split send button that opens the
"Schedule message" menu above it and hosts the custom time dialog
- ScheduleMessageMenu, ScheduleMessageMenuHeader and ScheduleMessagePresetButton:
the presets and "Custom time"
- ScheduleMessageDialog: message preview, separate date and time fields with the
native pickers, time zone note, offline and error notices
- ScheduleMessageDialogNotice: inline info and error notice
New ComponentContext slots: ScheduleMessageButton (null hides it) and
ScheduleMessageDialog. Styles use the existing design tokens.

- Add the schedule menu and dialog strings to all 12 locales
- Add timestamp/ScheduledMessage, reusing each locale's reminder calendar format
("Tomorrow at 09:00", "Monday at 09:00")
- Translate the composer's scheduling errors by reason: disabled (114), too soon
(115), too far (116), channel limit (117), user limit (118) and no permission
(403), with a generic fallback; translate the slash command warning

Render the ScheduleMessageButton next to the send button when the user can schedule
the current composition (schedule-message capability, feature enabled, no slash
command, poll, location or sent-message edit). Otherwise the send button renders
exactly as before, and Enter and Send keep sending immediately.

Merge Risk: High · up to 9c853
The new scheduled-message feature depends on stream-chat APIs that are missing from the pinned version, so the library currently fails to build and type-check. This PR is not mergeable until stream-chat is bumped to a release that includes the scheduled-message API. That matches the draft's stated dependency on the upstream release.

Explanation
The description follows the template sections Goal, Implementation details, and UI Changes. It gives the ticket, the parent ticket, the Figma link, the implementation scope, compatibility notes, tests, and a UI screenshot table with Figma node references. Some text in the Goal and Implementation sections appears truncated or garbled, and the UI section lists Figma node IDs rather than actual screenshots. The template asks for screenshots, so the author should add them or confirm the Figma tables are sufficient.

The composer now reports a composition that cannot be scheduled as
validation:scheduled-message:blocked with the reason in its metadata.
Translate it per reason (slash command, poll, shared location) with a
generic fallback, and add the strings to all 12 locales.

## 📝 About Stream
You can sign up for a Stream account at our Get Started page.
This library can be used by both frontend and backend applications. For frontend, we have frameworks that are based on this library such as the Flutter, React and Angular SDKs. For more information, check out our documentation.
## ⚙️ Installation
### NPM
npm install stream-chat
### Yarn
yarn add stream-chat
## ✨ Getting Started
import { StreamChat } from 'stream-chat';
// or if you are using CommonJS
const { StreamChat } = require('stream-chat');
const client = new StreamChat('API_KEY', 'API_SECRET', {
disableCache: true, // recommended option for server-side use
// ...other options like `baseURL`...
});
// create a user
await client.upsertUser({
id: 'vishal-1',
name: 'Vishal',
});
// create a channel
const channel = client.channel('messaging', 'test-channel', {
created_by_id: 'vishal-1',
});
await channel.create();
// send message
const { message } = await channel.sendMessage({ text: 'This is a test message' });
// send reaction
await channel.sendReaction(message.id, { type: 'love', user: { id: 'vishal-1' } });
The `StreamChat` client is set up to allow extension of the base types through use of module augmentation, custom types will carry through to all client returns and provide code-completion to queries (if supported). To extend Stream's entities with custom data you'll have to create a declaration file and make sure it's loaded by TypeScript, see the list of extendable interfaces and the example bellow using two of the most common ones:
// stream-custom-data.d.ts
import 'stream-chat';
declare module 'stream-chat' {
interface CustomMessageData {
custom_property?: number;
}
interface CustomUserData {
profile_picture?: string;
}
}
// index.ts
// property `profile_picture` is code-completed and expects type `string | undefined`
await client.partialUpdateUser({
id: 'vishal-1',
set: { profile_picture: 'https://random.picture/1.jpg' },
});
// property `custom_property` is code-completed and expects type `number | undefined`
const { message } = await channel.sendMessage({
text: 'This is another test message',
custom_property: 255,
});
message.custom_property; // in the response object as well
Warning
Generics mechanism has been removed in version `9.0.0` in favour of the module augmentation, please see the release guide on how to migrate.

### ⚠ BREAKING CHANGES
* remove hand-written types and API wrappers (#1836)
* i18n: `Streami18n.init()` now rejects when i18next fails to
initialize, where it previously logged and resolved. Callers that ignore
the returned promise will see an unhandled rejection. The instance
remains usable in its degraded English form either way.
`Streami18n.brand` is removed; nothing in either UI SDK read it, and a
custom integration that recognized instances through it should compare
against its own marker or accept the instance it was handed.
### Bug Fixes
* i18n: reject from init() and drop the Streami18n brand static (#1839) (67bb1c7)

Bump stream-chat before merging.
The lockfile resolves stream-chat to 9.54.0, but this version does not provide the scheduled-message exports used by this change. The imports cannot compile against the locked package.
Update both the devDependencies and peerDependencies entries to the first stream-chat release that exports the scheduled-message API.

Review comment at @src/components/ScheduledMessages/types.ts at line 2:
Update the stream-chat version constraints in both devDependencies and
peerDependencies to the earliest release that exports ScheduledMessageResponse
and the scheduled-message API, so the imports in the types module compile
against the locked package.
