docs(ai-migration): open the first channel once per load, not after every close - #3358
Fix the v14 to v15 guide's "No channel opens on load" snippet (section 6, "v14 list defaults that changed"). The current snippet re-subscribes to the paginator whenever the open channels change, and subscribeWithSelector fires on subscribe, so it opens the first channel again as soon as the user closes the last one. An app restoring v14's setActiveChannelOnMount default wants it once per load.
Implementation details
Docs only. The snippet:
subscribes on [paginator] only and reads the navigation through a ref, so opening or closing a channel does not replay an already loaded page;
counts each load once: closing the last channel, or a channel moving to the top of the list, opens nothing;
re-arms when the list returns to "never queried" (items === undefined, where client.disconnectUser() resets it), so the next user's first load opens its first channel;
checks openChannels instead of a useRef flag, so a ChatView view switch that remounts it does not replace the channel the user picked.
The bullet under the snippet now describes the once-per-load behavior.
The snippet was checked by extracting it into a temporary hook and running a test suite against it (initial load, a page loaded before mount, remount after picking another channel, a ChatView threads/channels view switch, reorder, empty first page, reload after a reset, no provider): all 8 pass, and it passes ESLint.
UI Changes
None.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Documentation
Updated the migration guide’s useOpenFirstChannel example to open the first channel only when no channel is already open, and to avoid overriding a channel selected by the user.
Added guidance on resetting this behavior when a list unloads, handling disconnect cleanup, and using the hook with multiple lists.
useOpenFirstChannel(paginator) restores v14's setActiveChannelOnMount
default: it opens the paginator's first channel when its first page
loads, only while no channel is open, so a remount (a ChatView view
switch unmounts the list) does not replace the channel the user picked.
createWorkspaceNavigation({ channel, thread, setChannel, setThread })
builds a complete WorkspaceNavigation for apps without ChatView (one
channel panel and one thread panel), so list rows mark themselves
active and ThreadHeader renders its close button without the
integrator knowing every member.
The v14 -> v15 guide's section 4 and 6 snippets use them.

Walkthrough
The migration example now opens the first paginator channel once per list load when no channel is open. It tracks current navigation state, resets its check when the list unloads, and documents disconnect and multiple-list behavior.

Summary
First-channel selection and load guidance ai-docs/ai-migration-v14-v15.md
The example tracks navigation state and opens the first paginator item once per load when no channel is open. The guidance describes behavior after disconnects and when multiple lists use the hook.
The migration example can unexpectedly reopen the first channel after remounting; this is a bounded documentation behavior issue but should be corrected.

Opening the first channel on load is the app's choice, not an SDK
default, so it stays out of the public API. The guide's section 6
snippet is the corrected version instead: it checks openChannels
rather than a useRef, so a ChatView view switch does not re-open the
first channel over the one the user picked.

Persist the handled-load state across remounts.
awaitingLoad resets to true whenever this effect remounts. Because subscribeWithSelector invokes its callback immediately with the current value, a loaded paginator with no open channel can call openChannel(first) again after a remount. This can reopen the first channel after the user closes it.
Persist the handled-load state across remounts, while preserving the reset when items === undefined. Add a remount test with a loaded paginator and no open channel.

The guide's section 4 (from #3356) already lists every navigation
member to override, so the builder would add public API for the
minority path without ChatView. Section 4 is back to master's text;
the section 6 open-first-channel snippet fix stays.

docs(ai-migration): open the first channel once per load, not after every close
Oct 29, 2026
Two small additions to the bullets under the snippet (ai-docs/ai-migration-v14-v15.md:1038-1040):
1. The sign-out sentence needs a condition. "After client.disconnectUser() resets the list, the next load opens its first channel again" is true only if the previous user's channel has been closed by then. The reset re-arms the hook, but it still opens only when openChannels is empty.
Logout disposes the user's channels (stream-chat channel.disconnect(): "The SDK calls it when a channel ends (… logout …)"), but ChatView empties a slot whose channel was disposed only when the opt-in <DisposedChannelRelease/> is mounted. Without it, the old channel stays in its slot, openChannels isn't empty, and nothing opens for the next user.
Without ChatView, it works when the app follows the "Drop held channels on disconnectUser()" step (line 661).
Suggested wording: "After client.disconnectUser() resets the list, the next load opens its first channel again, once the previous user's channel is closed: inside ChatView, mount <DisposedChannelRelease/>; without it, clear your own state as described in Without ChatView."
2. Several lists. With two lists mounted together, such as "Pinned" above "All" in ChannelLists, calling the hook for each lets the faster query win: whichever first page arrives first opens its channel. If the second page arrives before React re-renders after the first open (the ref is refreshed in a useEffect, after the commit), the second call still sees nothing open and opens its channel over the first. Each call only knows its own paginator, so it can't be fixed inside the hook. One more bullet would cover it: "With several lists, call it once, for the list whose first channel should open."

Goal
Fix the v14 to v15 guide's "No channel opens on load" snippet (section 6, "v14 list defaults that changed"). The current snippet re-subscribes to the paginator whenever the open channels change, and
subscribeWithSelectorfires on subscribe, so it opens the first channel again as soon as the user closes the last one. An app restoring v14'ssetActiveChannelOnMountdefault wants it once per load.Implementation details
Docs only. The snippet:
[paginator]only and reads the navigation through a ref, so opening or closing a channel does not replay an already loaded page;items === undefined, whereclient.disconnectUser()resets it), so the next user's first load opens its first channel;openChannelsinstead of auseRefflag, so aChatViewview switch that remounts it does not replace the channel the user picked.The bullet under the snippet now describes the once-per-load behavior.
The snippet was checked by extracting it into a temporary hook and running a test suite against it (initial load, a page loaded before mount, remount after picking another channel, a
ChatViewthreads/channels view switch, reorder, empty first page, reload after a reset, no provider): all 8 pass, and it passes ESLint.UI Changes
