fix(Message): show error notification when pin, mute or delete fails - #3360
A failed pin, unpin, mute, unmute or delete showed a success notification ("Message pinned", "{{ user }} has been muted", "Message deleted"), e.g. when a user role without the pin permission in the videocall scope tries to pin.
usePinHandler, useMuteHandler and useDeleteHandler caught the API error and only reported it through the optional notify, which Message.tsx never passes. So the handlers always resolved, and the default MessageActions published their success notification instead of the *:failed one.
On release-v14 only usePinHandler swallowed the error, which #3359 covers.
π Implementation details
usePinHandler, useMuteHandler and useDeleteHandler now rethrow the request's error. The optional notify / getErrorNotification path is unchanged and still fires before the rethrow. useMuteHandler no longer returns early from its catch when notify is missing, which is the path Message.tsx uses.
usePinHandler rolls back only the pin fields, onto the message as currently stored, so an edit or reaction that arrived while the request was in flight is kept. If the pin state changed again in the meantime, the rollback leaves it alone. The rollback also runs before notify, so a throwing callback cannot leave the optimistic state behind.
MessageContext.handlePin documents that it rejects on failure.
The vite example's custom message UI catches handlePin / handleDelete rejections instead of leaking an unhandled rejection.
Tests: usePinHandler.test.tsx (new) covers pin/unpin success, rollback, concurrent updates, a newer pin state, and a throwing notify. The mute and delete tests that asserted "notify (and not throw)" now assert the rethrow, plus a case without notify. Two Message.test.tsx tests named "should throw when (un)muting a user fails" now actually assert it.
Note for custom UIs: handlePin, handleMute and handleDelete from MessageContext now reject when the request fails instead of resolving silently.
Not included: the handlers (plus flag and mark unread) still return early without a request when a parameter is missing, so the action shows success. That only affects custom messages and handlers and is left for a follow-up.
π¨ UI Changes
No visual changes. A failed pin, unpin, mute, unmute or delete now shows the existing error notification instead of the success one.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
When pinning or unpinning fails, the message returns to its previous pin state without overwriting newer updates. The request error is also passed back to calling code, and applicable error notifications are still shown.
Mute, unmute, and delete failures now pass their errors back to calling code, including when notifications are not configured. When configured, error notifications are still sent.

Walkthrough
Pin and unpin handlers now use the latest stored message for optimistic updates and conditionally restore pin fields after failure. Pin, mute, unmute, and delete failures propagate to callers. The custom message UI catches rejected pin and delete operations and logs errors.

The pin-handler test concern remains open, but the available evidence does not establish a runtime failure. Confirm that the tests exercise accepted paginator updates before relying on them for this change.

Seed the pin fixtures with the channel cid so the state assertions can fail.
generateMessage does not set cid. The message paginator filters by { cid: channel.cid }, so a message without cid is not stored. The spy assertions still pass because vi.spyOn records calls. The state stays unchanged, so the tests cannot detect a broken optimistic update or rollback. Apply the same fix to the unpin fixtures.
Also assert the paginator state. Check that the message is present while the request is pending. Check that the original message is restored after a failed request. Call-argument assertions alone do not cover these transitions.

This is tracked in REACT-1264, "Delete, pin and mute show a success notification when the request fails": https://linear.app/stream/issue/REACT-1264. Could you link it in the description?
On release-v14, #3359 covers it fully, since only usePinHandler swallows the error there.
On master, this PR fixes only pin. useMuteHandler (:51, :73) and useDeleteHandler (:46) still catch the error without rethrowing, and Message.tsx passes them no notify. So a failed mute, unmute or delete still shows "User muted" / "Message deleted". Could they rethrow the same way here?
A smaller one from the ticket's comments: those handlers (plus flag and mark unread) also return early without sending a request when a parameter is missing, and the action then shows success. That only affects custom messages and handlers, so it can wait.

> **Stacked on #3360.** The base is `fix/pin-failure-notification-v15`,
so the diff shows only this change. Retarget to `master` once #3360 is
merged.
### π― Goal
Follow-up from the review on #3360 and the comments on REACT-1264.
The message action handlers returned early without sending a request
when a required parameter was missing, and some only logged a
`console.warn`. The default `MessageActions` treat a resolved handler as
success, so the action showed "Message deleted", "{{ user }} has been
muted" and so on even though nothing happened. This only affects custom
messages and handlers, since `Message.tsx` always passes the message.
### π Implementation details
The guards now throw instead of returning:
| Handler | Before | Now |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `useMuteHandler` | `console.warn`, return | throws
`missingUseMuteHandlerParamsWarning` |
| `useFlagHandler` | `console.warn`, return | throws
`missingUseFlagHandlerParameterWarning` |
| `useDeleteHandler` | silent return | throws "useDeleteHandler was
called but it is missing one or more necessary parameters." |
| `usePinHandler` | silent return | throws "usePinHandler was called but
it is missing the message." |
| `useMarkUnreadHandler` | `console.warn`, return | throws "Mark unread
handler does not have access to message id" |
- The exported `missingUseMuteHandlerParamsWarning` /
`missingUseFlagHandlerParameterWarning` constants are kept and used as
the error message, so no exports change.
- The default actions show `error.message`, so a misconfigured custom
setup now shows this developer-facing message instead of a false
success. That is deliberate: it only happens when integrator code is
wrong, and it makes the bug visible.
- Known gap: that message is untranslated English, and the end user sees
it in the snackbar in every locale. Failed requests already show the
server's raw error text the same way. REACT-1285 tracks showing the
translated fallback (e.g. "Error deleting message") as the
notification's `message` while keeping the original in its `error` field
for logging. That fix covers these errors too, so this PR adds nothing
extra for it.
- The vite example's custom message UI catches `handleFlag` rejections,
like it already does for pin and delete.
- Tests: the mute and flag tests that expected a warning, and the
mark-unread tests that expected a silent no-op, now expect the error and
check that no request was sent. Delete and pin gain a missing-parameter
test.
Note for custom UIs: `handleDelete`, `handlePin`, `handleMute`,
`handleFlag` and `handleMarkUnread` now reject when called without the
parameters they need.
### π¨ UI Changes
No visual changes. A handler called without its required parameters now
shows the error notification instead of the success one.

Ticket: https://linear.app/stream/issue/REACT-1264
### π― Goal
When the server rejects a pin (e.g. a `user` role without the pin
permission in the `videocall` scope), the UI still showed a "Message
pinned" success notification. Unpin had the same problem.
`usePinHandler` caught the API error, rolled back the optimistic update,
and swallowed it, so `handlePin` always resolved. The Pin action in
`MessageActions` relies on `handlePin` throwing to show its existing
"Error pinning message" / "Error removing message pin" notification, so
that branch never ran.
On `release-v14` only `usePinHandler` swallowed the error, so this PR
covers REACT-1264 for v14. The v15 counterpart, which also fixes mute
and delete, is #3360.
### π Implementation details
- `usePinHandler` now rethrows the request's error after rolling back,
for both pin and unpin. This matches sibling handlers such as
`useMuteHandler`, which let API errors propagate.
- The rollback restores only the pin fields, onto the message as
currently stored in `channel.state` (`findMessage`, which also covers
thread replies). An edit or reaction that arrived while the request was
in flight is kept instead of being overwritten by the pre-click
snapshot. If the pin state changed again in the meantime, the rollback
leaves it alone. The optimistic update also starts from the stored
message.
- `MessageContext.handlePin`'s JSDoc now says it pins or unpins and
rejects with the request's error after rolling back.
- The vite example's custom message UI catches `handlePin` rejections
instead of leaking an unhandled rejection.
- `usePinHandler.test.tsx` uses a real `Channel`, with `updateMessage`
writing to `channel.state` like `Channel` does, and checks the stored
message: pin/unpin success and rollback, an edit made during the request
surviving the rollback, and a newer pin state being kept.
Note for custom UIs: `handlePin` from `MessageContext` now rejects when
the request fails instead of resolving silently. Custom message UIs
calling it directly should handle the rejection.
React Native is not affected β its `handleTogglePinMessage` awaits
`client.pinMessage` directly and already shows the error notification.
### π¨ UI Changes

notification instead of the success one.
