fix(Message): throw when a message handler is missing a parameter - #3362
Stacked on #3360. The base is fix/pin-failure-notification-v15, so the diff shows only this change. Retarget to master once #3360 is merged.
π― Goal
Follow-up from the review on #3360 and the comments on REACT-1264.
The message action handlers returned early without sending a request when a required parameter was missing, and some only logged a console.warn. The default MessageActions treat a resolved handler as success, so the action showed "Message deleted", "{{ user }} has been muted" and so on even though nothing happened. This only affects custom messages and handlers, since Message.tsx always passes the message.
π Implementation details
The guards now throw instead of returning:
Handler
Before
Now
useMuteHandler
console.warn, return
throws missingUseMuteHandlerParamsWarning
useFlagHandler
console.warn, return
throws missingUseFlagHandlerParameterWarning
useDeleteHandler
silent return
throws "useDeleteHandler was called but it is missing one or more necessary parameters."
usePinHandler
silent return
throws "usePinHandler was called but it is missing the message."
useMarkUnreadHandler
console.warn, return
throws "Mark unread handler does not have access to message id"
The exported missingUseMuteHandlerParamsWarning / missingUseFlagHandlerParameterWarning constants are kept and used as the error message, so no exports change.
The default actions show error.message, so a misconfigured custom setup now shows this developer-facing message instead of a false success. That is deliberate: it only happens when integrator code is wrong, and it makes the bug visible.
Known gap: that message is untranslated English, and the end user sees it in the snackbar in every locale. Failed requests already show the server's raw error text the same way. REACT-1285 tracks showing the translated fallback (e.g. "Error deleting message") as the notification's message while keeping the original in its error field for logging. That fix covers these errors too, so this PR adds nothing extra for it.
The vite example's custom message UI catches handleFlag rejections, like it already does for pin and delete.
Tests: the mute and flag tests that expected a warning, and the mark-unread tests that expected a silent no-op, now expect the error and check that no request was sent. Delete and pin gain a missing-parameter test.
Note for custom UIs: handleDelete, handlePin, handleMute, handleFlag and handleMarkUnread now reject when called without the parameters they need.
π¨ UI Changes
No visual changes. A handler called without its required parameters now shows the error notification instead of the success one.

Bug Fixes
Deleting, flagging, marking unread, muting, or pinning a message now reports an error when required message details or client information are missing, rather than silently doing nothing.
The example flag-message button now handles failed requests and avoids leaving rejected errors unhandled.

Walkthrough
Message action handlers now throw errors when required values are missing. Tests verify these rejections and confirm that the corresponding operations are not called. The custom flag button awaits handleFlag and logs rejected calls.
The delete, flag, mark-unread, mute, and pin handlers throw errors when required values are missing. Tests assert rejection and verify that the corresponding operation is not called.
Handle rejected flag calls examples/vite/src/CustomMessageUi/variants.tsx
The flag button passes the click event to handleFlag, awaits the result, and logs an error if the call rejects.
GetStream/stream-chat-react#3360: This PR continues the handler error changes for message actions and handles rejected custom flag calls.

Some missing-parameter failures may display raw developer diagnostics instead of localized action errors. This is a limited user-facing issue, but the published finding should remain tracked.

Together with #3360 this covers everything in REACT-1264, and every SDK caller awaits these handlers inside a try/catch (MessageActions.defaults.tsx:224, :342, :536, :591, :663), so the new rejections can't go unhandled in the default UI. Two things:
1. It conflicts with its base.#3360 got 8ee1084c6 ("skip pin rollback when a newer pin arrived") after this branch was cut, and both change usePinHandler.ts. This needs a rebase onto #3360's current head.
2. The new errors reach end users as raw English. On failure the default actions show the error's own message when it has one: getErrorMessage(error, fallback) returns error.message and uses the translated fallback only when there's none (MessageActions.defaults.tsx:41-42). So a misconfigured custom message now shows the user "useDeleteHandler was called but it is missing one or more necessary parameters." in English, in every locale. That's the developer seeing the bug, but through the end user's snackbar.
This is the same gap as REACT-1285's "Raw server error" bullet: a failed request already shows the server's untranslated text the same way. The notification also carries the error itself (error: getNotificationError(error), e.g. :679), so the fix there could show the translated fallback ("Error deleting message") as message and keep the details in error for logging. If that's the direction, the missing-parameter errors here need nothing extra. I'd leave it to REACT-1285 rather than block this PR, but it's worth noting in the description that, until then, the developer message is what users see.
Already in: 8ee1084c6 is merged into this branch (1c997f3c8). It's a merge rather than a rebase so the branch never needs a force push. GitHub reports the PR as mergeable with no conflicts.
Agreed, leaving it to REACT-1285. I added a "Known gap" bullet to the description: until then, end users see the developer message in English.

Thanks, both points are settled: the merge brings in #3360's commit, and the known gap is documented and left to REACT-1285. Looks good once #3360 lands.

## Goal
Make the v14 β v15 guide the input of a prebuilt migration prompt: a
coding agent gets one URL plus the user's repo and has to migrate
accurately.
## Implementation details
**`ai-docs/ai-migration-v14-v15.md`, restructured for agents.** Section
numbers and existing anchors are unchanged.
- Rules for the agent, and companion documents with raw URLs: the new
stream-chat v9 β v10 agent guide, the JS reference, this reference and
the i18n guide.
- A phased workflow, a definition of done and a report template.
- A detection block keyed on v14 names. It searches the whole repo,
including CSS, `package.json`, CI files and `.nvmrc`.
- A quick reference of about 80 rows.
- A Detect column on all rows of the "Breaks that do not fail to
compile" table, plus 6 new rows.
- A closing Verification section, placed before the index:
- a leftover-identifier grep over about 150 v14 names, plus a CSS grep;
- single-copy checks for `stream-chat`, `@stream-io/state-store` and
`dayjs`;
- a runtime smoke list.
**`ai-docs/v15-breaking-changes.md`: missed changes added since #3346**
(numbered from BC-079: master's BC-078 is the `CustomCommandData` /
`DefaultCommandData` removal)
- BC-079: `useUserRole().canEdit` is now the permission alone.
- BC-080: edit, copy and download rules moved onto
`defaultMessageActionSet` items as `isVisible`.
- BC-081: the quote renders above a poll; poll messages get the
`--has-poll` class.
- BC-082: custom preview slots mount only while their preview is
visible.
- BC-083: message action handlers reject on failure (#3360, #3362).
- BC-084: the first-message padding is removed (#3370).
- Explicit `bc-NNN` anchors; the index's links did not resolve before.
The guide's index and the reference now hold the same 84 IDs.
**Corrections**
- Reconnect: `client.connectionRecovery` reloads the active channels and
threads. The guide now warns that reloading again on
`connection.recovered` reloads twice.
- The Β§9 typing slice is `Record<string, EventPayload<'typing.start'>>`,
so the type guard is gone.
- rc pins and rc history are removed.
**Other files**
- `ai-docs/ai-migration.md` (v13 β v14) has a one-line banner pointing
to the v14 β v15 guide.
- `AGENTS.md`: the stale "Per-component request-handler props removed"
reference now links to `#14-request-handlers`.
## How it was checked
- Every identifier in the guide was checked against `src`,
stream-chat-js `release-v10` and `@stream-io/i18n` / `state-store`. No
stale or invented name remains on the "after" side.
- All links resolve: 99 internal links in the guide, 84 in the
reference, and the 5 links to stream-chat-js anchors.
- The detection and leftover greps were run on a synthetic v14 app and
on `examples/`.
- The new snippets type-check, and prettier passes.
## Notes
- The raw link to the stream-chat-js guide resolves once its PR is
merged into `release-v10`.
- The local `node_modules/stream-chat` is rc.28, while `package.json`
wants rc.29.
## UI Changes
None (docs only).
