fix(composer): keep programmatic scrolls inside an embedded composer (CHAT-42) - #93
Conversation
…(CHAT-42) A composer inside a scrolling page scrolled that page by a few pixels on every programmatic text change (clear, setText, ask-user step changes), and the ask-user focus moves could scroll it too. scrollCaretIntoView had two problems that combined. Its ancestor walk stopped only at
, so when the composer's own text area didn't overflow, it reached the page's scroller. And it measured a collapsed caret on an empty line, whose rect is all zeros and read as "above the view". The walk now stops at Composer.Root, and a caret with no box is measured by its line's
(a line break, or the padding break an empty editor has), so a trailing empty line in an overflowing composer still scrolls into view. The walk lives in internal/scroll-into-view-within.ts, shared with AskUser: its roving focus now focuses with preventScroll and brings the option into view within the question. The composer's internal focus moves (back to the input from the options, typing to answer, dismissing commands) pass preventScroll too; for that, the controller's focus() takes HTMLElement.focus()'s options. With no arguments it behaves as before, so focusing an off-screen composer still brings it into view. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Resolves CHAT-42.
Problem
In a composer embedded in a scrolling page, every programmatic text change (
clear(),setText(), the ask-user step changes) scrolled that page. In the docs Composer "Ask-user flow" demo, the page moved up 9px each time you chose an option or stepped between questions.Cause and fix
scrollCaretIntoViewhad two problems that combined:
. When the composer's own text area didn't overflow, it reached the page's scroller. It now stops atComposer.Root.
: a line break, or the padding break an empty editor always has. A trailing empty line in an overflowing composer still scrolls into view. Checked in Chrome: the collapsed caret returns0×0attop: 0, while a range around its
returns the real line box.The walk now lives in
internal/scroll-into-view-within.ts(scrollIntoViewWithin(rect, from, boundary)) and is shared withAskUser.Focus moves:
AskUser's roving focus now focuses withpreventScrolland brings the option into view within the question.preventScrolltoo: back to the input from the options, typing to answer, and dismissing commands.focus()now takesHTMLElement.focus()'s options. With no arguments it behaves as before, so focusing an off-screen composer still brings it into view.Verified in Chrome (docs "Ask-user flow" demo, docs scroller position)
Focus still lands on the right option or input at every step.
Tests
composer-scroll-containment.test.tsx: 9 tests. They cover the scrolling ancestor'sscrollTopstaying unchanged for an empty editor's caret (the ticket's acceptance case), the walk stopping at the composer, an overflowing text area still scrolling, the empty-last-line measurement, and the ask-user focus moves passingpreventScroll.Related
