fix(composer): don't reset the store when effects disconnect (CHAT-41) - #94
Conversation
Composer.Root reset a store it owned in its effect cleanup. React runs that cleanup without a real unmount too, for StrictMode's simulated unmount in development and for an <Activity> hidden and shown again, and the component's state survives both. The reset wiped the snapshot while the editor kept its doc: the placeholder drew over text set through a controlled value at mount (the controlled value matched the doc, so nothing recommitted hasContent), an open command list fell out of sync, and under <Activity> attachments vanished and ask-user progress reset. The cleanup now only undoes what its effect set up. A store the composer creates goes away with it on a real unmount. Trade-off: unsent attachments of a composer that truly unmounts keep their blob URLs until the page unloads, since React gives no signal that tells a real unmount from a hidden one. This replaces the ticket's proposed re-seed on attach: with nothing wiped, there is nothing to re-seed. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

- Line 83: Add a definitive disposal path for attachment blob URLs when the
composer is truly abandoned, while preserving them through StrictMode and
Activity effect cleanups. Do not restore store.reset() to the effect cleanup;
use a lifecycle signal that distinguishes a true unmount and releases only the
abandoned attachments.

Problem
In development, the docs Thread autoscroll demo drew the placeholder "Ask a follow-up…" over its prefilled text, "Is memoising the list enough?".
Cause
Composer.Rootreset a store it owned in its effect cleanup (if (ownsStore) store.reset()). React runs that cleanup without a real unmount too: StrictMode's simulated unmount, and an<Activity>hidden then shown again. The component's state survives both, but the reset wiped the store's snapshot while the editor kept its text:hasContent<Activity>, attached files vanish and their previews' blob URLs are revoked<Activity>, a half-answered question resetsFix
The cleanup now only undoes what its effect set up (
submitAnswersRef). A store the composer creates for itself goes away with it on a real unmount; an explicitComposer.createStore()handle behaves as before.This replaces the ticket's proposed fix (re-seed
hasContentwhen the editor attaches). That would have fixed the placeholder but left the other three rows wiped. With nothing wiped, nothing needs re-seeding.Trade-off: if a composer truly unmounts with unsent attachments, their blob URLs aren't revoked until the page unloads. React gives no signal that tells a real unmount from a hidden one, and revoking on the hidden case breaks the previews when it's shown again. This is noted in the changeset.
