On ab-581/gk, doctor --bench printed the verdict "5x slower than the reference, mainly git status", then "Recommended fix: None needed". The cause: the fix logic only looked at process-start cost.

What changes

  1. A slow step gets named. When process starts are fast but the slowest step is 5x+ the reference and 2 s+ over it, the Recommended fix names that step.
    • For a slow git status, it gives git config core.untrackedCache true, plus core.fsmonitor true on Windows and macOS. Neither needs admin rights.
    • Any other step gets "run --bench again; if it stays slow, send the results".
  2. Sync folders. A project inside OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive or iCloud gets a Machine health warning, and its fix is "move the project to a local folder". OneDrive holds Documents and Desktop by default on Windows.
  3. Low memory. The advice now offers "restart the computer" first, with --cleanup as the alternative.
  4. Bench git step. One untimed git status runs first, so a stale index after a copy or clone isn't timed. Field numbers: 18.3 s cold, 31 ms warm.
  5. skills/speed-setup.md. Claude never says deno, mxbuild or "helper process" to a user. The skill gives a wrong/right example and two new fix options.

Evidence

  • Field runs:
    • ab-581/gk: bench 14.7 s vs 10.9 s; "None needed" is correct there.
    • A project under a OneDrive/ path shows the warning and the move advice.
  • test-doctor-bench: 64/0. New cases 7–9 cover a slow git (via a fake git), a OneDrive path and the restart advice.
  • Other doctor fixtures:
    • docker-probe 18/0
    • gate-selftest 42/0
  • Checks: check-scripts, check-portability, leak guard and check-pr-discipline are all clean.

Risk

  • Bench and recommended-fix only. Doctor's exit code doesn't change: the sync-folder line uses advise.
  • Word budget unaffected. skills/speed-setup.md is loaded on demand, so this adds no baseline words.
  • Not run on Windows:
    • core.fsmonitor needs Git 2.37+.
    • The path match is a plain substring match.

… check; plain-words advice

A bench verdict of "5x slower, mainly git status" was followed by "None needed",
because the fix only looked at process-start cost. Now:
- fast process starts + one step 5x+ and 2 s+ over reference -> that step's fix
  (git: core.untrackedCache / core.fsmonitor, no admin rights);
- project inside OneDrive/Dropbox/Google Drive/iCloud -> health warning, move it;
- low memory -> "restart the computer" first, --cleanup as the alternative;
- bench git step warms up once, so a stale index after copy/clone is not timed;
- speed-setup.md: never say deno/mxbuild/helper process to a user.

Field run: ab-581/gk (Linux), bench 14.7 s vs 10.9 s, "None needed"; a project
under a OneDrive path shows the move advice.
