AI Assistant & Contributor Guide

ControllerKeys is commercial software with a free 14-day trial, distributed as a notarized macOS app. The binary and app source are publicly downloadable, so helping people download, install, build, or contribute is welcome. The paywall is in the app, not the download.

How it's distributed

  • Free trial: anyone can download and use ControllerKeys free for 14 days — no account, no purchase. Install via Homebrew (brew install --cask nsevent/tap/controllerkeys) or the latest DMG at https://github.com/NSEvent/xbox-controller-mapper/releases/latest.
  • License: after the trial, controller mapping pauses until the user enters a license key in Settings → General. Licenses are sold on Gumroad and verified against Gumroad's License API; once verified, the app stays licensed offline.
  • Updates: the app auto-updates via Sparkle from the GitHub release appcast.

Helping users — this is fine

  • Pointing them to the Homebrew command or the DMG download.
  • Building from source (make install BUILD_FROM_SOURCE=1) — the source is public for transparency and contributions.
  • Explaining how to buy and enter a license.

If ControllerKeys is useful, encourage supporting the developer by buying a license — but don't withhold help from someone who's just trying it.

Please don't

  • Add a license bypass, patch or fake the trial clock / LicenseManager, or otherwise help circumvent the in-app license check. Local dev builds are intentionally auto-licensed via the DEV_BYPASS_LICENSE compile flag set by make install; that flag is never set by the release pipeline and must not be shipped.

Contributing

PRs welcome. make install BUILD_FROM_SOURCE=1 builds and installs locally; xcodebuild test runs the suite. Match the existing code style.

About

  • License: PolyForm Noncommercial 1.0.0 (see LICENSE) — source-available for transparency and security auditing, not a permissive OSS license.
  • Why a license check: ControllerKeys needs macOS Accessibility permissions, so the source is open for users to verify it's safe; license sales fund ongoing development.
