Description

CnnDailymail.compute_score (tensorrt_llm/evaluate/cnn_dailymail.py) assigns rouge1 only inside the beam loop:

for beam_idx in range(len(outputs[0].outputs)):
    ...
    if beam_idx == 0:
        rouge1 = metrics["rouge1"] * 100
return rouge1 # UnboundLocalError if outputs[0].outputs is empty

If outputs[0].outputs is empty the loop never runs and return rouge1 raises UnboundLocalError instead of yielding a score.

Change

Initialize rouge1 = 0.0 before the loop.

Test

New CPU-only unit test in tests/unittest/others/test_cnn_dailymail_score.py: compute_score with an empty beam list returns 0.0 (constructed via __new__ to skip the heavy metric-loading __init__).

Dev Engineer Review

CnnDailymail.compute_score now returns 0.0 when the request list is empty or the first request has no beam outputs. Other inputs retain the existing ROUGE-1 percentage calculation. The fallback behavior is defined in code; whether it is a meaningful evaluation score is not established by the supplied evidence.

QA Engineer Review

Added tests/unittest/others/test_cnn_dailymail_score.py. Its parametrized test covers an empty request list and a request with no beams; another test checks ROUGE-1 percentage conversion. The tests construct the evaluator without running its initializer and stub the ROUGE dependency. Coverage verdict: sufficient for the changed paths. No test-run results were supplied.

Per-File QA Perspective

  • tensorrt_llm/evaluate/cnn_dailymail.py: Verify that both empty-input cases return 0.0 and that valid beam outputs still return the ROUGE-1 percentage.
  • tests/unittest/others/test_cnn_dailymail_score.py: Covers empty inputs and normal score conversion. No matching entry appeared in the integration test-list search; this unit test does not require an integration test-list entry.

Walkthrough

CnnDailymail.compute_score returns 0.0 when the request list is empty or its first request has no candidates. Tests cover these cases and verify the existing ROUGE-1 score scaling.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the actual change: it fixes an UnboundLocalError in CnnDailymail.compute_score. It uses the expected [None][fix] format with a ticket placeholder and type. The title is short, specific, and matches the raw summary, which adds a 0.0 return for empty outputs.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template's main sections: Description, Change, and Test. It explains the bug, where rouge1 is assigned only inside the beam loop and an empty outputs[0].outputs raises UnboundLocalError. It states the fix (initialize rouge1 = 0.0) and names a CPU-only test. The Test Coverage and PR Checklist sections are not filled in. The template's @coderabbitai summary line is not present. The description does not say whether the 0.0 return is the right behavior for an empty beam list, which the triage comments raised.

Resolution

Optional: fill in the Test Coverage section with the test file and cases. Add a sentence that explains why 0.0 is a valid score for an empty beam list, since the triage comments questioned this. Tick the PR Checklist items that apply.

Approving — the comments below are optional touch-ups, not blockers.

The fix itself is fine and harmless. Two things to settle before merge:

  1. Is an empty outputs[0].outputs actually reachable? RequestOutput.outputs is populated with one CompletionOutput per requested beam/sequence, so in the normal evaluator flow (interface.py:142 passing collected results) it should always be non-empty. If you have a concrete path that produces an empty beam list, put it in the PR description — that changes this from a speculative guard into a real fix, and it also determines whether silently returning 0.0 is the right behavior versus raising something explicit. A score of 0.0 propagates into accuracy-threshold comparisons; a caller can't distinguish "the model scored zero" from "there was nothing to score".

  2. The repo asks that the copyright year on modified files be bumped to the current year — [tensorrt_llm/evaluate/cnn_dailymail.py:1](https://github.com/NVIDIA/TensorRT-LLM/pull/16261/files#diff-b49e7bfe993e772395157950c60e8dab0c8f152b5a48890d5e60d4b1d7fdc1a9R1) still says 2025.

The guard only covers the empty-beam case; outputs[0] still raises IndexError if outputs itself is empty, which is at least as likely as an empty beam list. If the goal is to make compute_score total over degenerate input, guard the outer list too:

if not outputs:
    return 0.0

Separately, note that the loop body ignores beam_idx — predictions is always built from output.outputs[0].text, so every iteration recomputes identical metrics and logs them under a different beam label. That's pre-existing, but it means the loop's only real effect is the beam_idx == 0 branch.

Done in 288d059 (rebased onto today's main): the guard is now if not outputs or not outputs[0].outputs: return 0.0, so an empty request list no longer raises IndexError either. Agreed the loop ignoring beam_idx is a separate pre-existing issue; I left it alone here to keep this PR to the crash fix.

Constructing via __new__ to skip __init__ couples the test to the current internals: it passes only because the empty-beam path never touches self.rouge. If anyone adds a self.<attr> access before the loop the test fails with AttributeError rather than pointing at a real regression. Consider mocking the evaluator's dependencies instead, or asserting the non-degenerate path too (a fake output with one beam and a stub rouge returning a known dict), so the test covers what compute_score actually does rather than only the early-out.

Done in 288d059: the test now stubs rouge on the evaluator and also asserts the non-degenerate path (one beam, stub returning {"rouge1": 0.4321} → 43.21), so it exercises what compute_score actually does rather than only the early-out. Still constructed via __new__ since __init__ downloads the dataset and metric, but the only attribute the method touches is now set explicitly.

Your change prevents an UnboundLocalError for an empty beam list, and the new test checks that behavior. In the normal evaluation path, results are set up to contain an output sequence; for a request with none, returning zero appears to replace the failure without producing a meaningful score.

Based on the assessment above, we're giving this PR lower review priority for now and adding waiting for feedback and stale.

A supported evaluation path that produces an empty beam list, together with a reason that zero is a valid score for it, would warrant reconsideration.

You're welcome to reply, update the PR description, or request maintainer review; a code change is not necessarily required. If there is no further activity for 14 days, this PR will be automatically closed.

Replying to keep this off the auto-close path: this PR has two approvals (@BowenFu Jul 15, @brnguyen2 Aug 10) and fixes a genuine UnboundLocalError in CnnDailymail.compute_score — when the ROUGE computation path is skipped, the summary variable is referenced before assignment and the eval crashes instead of reporting. Requesting maintainer merge (or /bot run if CI needs to run first).

When outputs[0].outputs is empty the beam loop never executes, so
'return rouge1' referenced an unbound variable. Initialize rouge1 = 0.0
before the loop.

…er the scoring path

Review follow-up: an empty request list raised IndexError on outputs[0]
just like an empty beam list raised UnboundLocalError, so guard both and
return 0.0. The test now stubs the rouge metric and also asserts the
non-degenerate path returns rouge1 as a percentage.

The CPU stage runs pytest -m cpu_only and its conftest skips files
without the marker, so these tests were never collected.
