[None][fix] repair KeyboardInterrupt drain loop in iteration logging - #17731
Two defects in IterationWriter.run's except KeyboardInterrupt handler:
It reads message, which is unbound when the interrupt lands before the first socket.recv_json() — the common case, since the writer blocks there — raising UnboundLocalError.
It drains with while message != b"None", comparing the decoded JSON object against bytes. The sender (LlmManager.iteration_worker) never emits b"None"; it sends {"end": True}, so the loop could never terminate via its sentinel.
Initialize message, guard the socket, and drain until the actual "end" sentinel.
Test Plan
Ctrl-C during trtllm-bench throughput --iteration_log ... no longer raises UnboundLocalError in the writer process and exits once the end sentinel arrives.
Dev Engineer Review
IterationWriter.run initializes message to None, so the interrupt handler can safely check it if KeyboardInterrupt occurs before the first receive.
The handler drains messages only after the socket binds. It continues until it receives a message containing the "end" key.
The change removes the incorrect comparison with b"None". No public declarations or configuration files changed.
QA Engineer Review
No test changes.
Per-File QA Perspective
tensorrt_llm/bench/benchmark/utils/processes.py: Verify that an interrupt before the first receive does not raise UnboundLocalError, and that the writer drains through the {"end": true} sentinel after binding. Also verify that an interrupt during bind exits without waiting for a message.
IterationWriter.run now tracks whether the ZeroMQ socket has bound successfully. On KeyboardInterrupt, it waits for a message containing the "end" key only if binding succeeded.
Initializes the message state and records successful socket binding. On KeyboardInterrupt, it waits for a message containing the "end" key only when the socket has bound.
The fix should add bounded tests for both interrupt paths before merging to prevent regressions in benchmark shutdown.

In PyZMQ, the Socket.recv method's blocking behavior is determined by its flags and the socket's configuration [1][2]. By default, recv blocks indefinitely until a message is available [1][3]. If the zmq.NOBLOCK flag is provided to recv, the method will return immediately; if no message is available, it raises a ZMQError (specifically with EAGAIN) [1][4]. For more granular control, the RCVTIMEO (Receive Timeout) option can be configured on a socket [5][3]. This option sets the maximum time (in milliseconds) the socket will wait for a message before returning a ZMQError (with EAGAIN) [3]. The default value for RCVTIMEO is -1, which signifies an infinite wait [3]. Regarding unbound sockets, a ZeroMQ socket does not need to be bound or connected to have its options (like RCVTIMEO) set or to be in a state where recv could technically be called [6][3]. However, calling recv on an unbound, unconnected socket will result in blocking (or timeout) behavior because the socket will never receive a message from a peer [1][3]. While bind attaches a socket to a specific address to listen for incoming connections, the underlying socket operations (like recv) rely on the ZeroMQ state machine rather than strictly requiring a successful bind to execute [6].

Guard the drain on a successfully bound socket.
If KeyboardInterrupt occurs during socket.bind(address), socket is non-None while the bind did not complete. The handler can then call blocking socket.recv_json() and prevent the child process from exiting. Set socket_bound = True only after socket.bind(address) returns, and check it before draining.

Done in fba0622 (rebased onto today's main): socket_bound is set only after socket.bind(address) returns and the KeyboardInterrupt drain loop is gated on it, so an interrupt during bind no longer blocks in recv_json().
The handler read 'message' which is unbound when the interrupt lands
before the first recv_json(), raising UnboundLocalError. It also compared
the decoded JSON object against b'None', a sentinel the sender never
emits (LlmManager sends {'end': True}), so the drain loop could never
terminate normally. Initialize the variable, guard the socket, and drain
until the actual 'end' sentinel.

Review follow-up: a KeyboardInterrupt during socket.bind() leaves socket
non-None but unbound, and the drain loop would then block forever in
recv_json(). Track socket_bound and gate the drain on it.

Add regression coverage for both interrupt paths.
IterationWriter.run must drain through {"end": True} after an interrupt during recv_json(), and must skip draining when bind() is interrupted. The PR adds no test for either path. Add bounded tests under tests/** that interrupt the first receive, then return a statistics message and the end sentinel, and that interrupt bind() while asserting recv_json() is not called.
