[#19755][fix] Stream MiniMax-M2 tool-call arguments as deltas - #19757
MohammadHijjawi97 wants to merge 3 commits into
Conversation
When a MiniMax-M2 tool call arrived over several streaming chunks, the
parser re-sent the whole arguments JSON every time a parameter
completed, and once the invoke closed it emitted the function name again
under the next tool index. Clients that concatenate argument deltas got
invalid JSON such as '{"city": "Paris"}{"city": "Paris", "unit": ...}'
plus a phantom second tool call.
Stream the partial arguments as an open-object prefix, send only the
remaining suffix when the invoke completes, and look for the next
partial invoke only after the last complete one.

Explanation
The parser changes satisfy issue
#19755.parse_streaming_incrementemits only the new argument suffix, reuses the streamed tool name when an invoke completes, and searches for a partial invoke after the last complete invoke. The tests cover small chunk sizes, multiple invokes, valid reconstructed JSON, tool indices, and prefix text emitted once.

Explanation
The changes are limited to MiniMax-M2 streaming parser logic and focused regression tests. The parser changes directly address the duplicate arguments, phantom tool call, partial-invoke matching, and repeated prefix text described for issue

Handle repeated parameter names before slicing argument deltas.
Repeated parameter names use last-value-wins semantics. If location=NYC is streamed first and location=Paris completes the same invocation later, the partial path emits {"location": "NYC" and the completion path emits s"}. The accumulated arguments become {"location": "NYC"s"}, which is invalid JSON. One-shot parsing correctly returns {"location": "Paris"}.
Define an explicit duplicate-parameter error policy before streaming, or buffer the arguments until completion if last-value-wins behavior must remain supported. Add a regression test with the repeated parameter tags in separate chunks.

LGTM: the streamed argument deltas now match the non-streaming parse. One non-blocking, pre-existing issue inline.

Not from this PR, but same streaming path: prefix_text (L187) is recomputed from self._buffer, which is only trimmed at </minimax:tool_call>, so any text that arrived in the same delta as <minimax:tool_call> is returned again on every later increment. With the MiniMax-M2 tokenizer and stream_interval=4, "I'll check the weather in Paris for you." streams as "...for you........." (one extra "." per delta until the block closes). Setting self._buffer = current_text[tc_start:] after reading the prefix fixes it. Fine to leave for a follow-up if you want to keep this PR narrow.

When text arrived in the same streaming delta as <minimax:tool_call>, the parser returned it as normal text on every later increment until the tool-call block closed, because the buffer was only trimmed at </minimax:tool_call>. Drop the returned prefix from the buffer so it is streamed exactly once. Signed-off-by: Mohammad Hijjawi <mohammad.hijjawi1997@gmail.com>

Thanks for catching this. Since it's the same streaming path, I fixed it here: the buffer is now trimmed to start at |
Dev Engineer Review
MiniMaxM2ToolParser.parse_streaming_incrementnow drops already-emitted prefix text from its buffer and searches for a partial invocation after the last complete invocation. It reuses a streamed tool name and emits only new argument JSON suffixes when an invocation completes. These changes address duplicate prefix text, repeated arguments, duplicate tool names, and partial matches across closed invocations. The non-streaming parser remains unchanged.QA Engineer Review
tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_tool_parsers.pyadds parameterized coverage for chunk sizes 1, 4, and 9. The test checks two tool calls and reconstructed arguments. Another test checks that text received with the opening tool-call tag appears once. The supplied validation reports that the small-chunks regression test passes after the fix and that the test file passes locally on CPU. Coverage verdict: sufficient for the reported streaming regressions. Integration test-list status is not applicable to these unit tests.Per-File QA Perspective
tensorrt_llm/serve/tool_parser/minimax_m2_parser.py: Verify that prefix text appears once, argument deltas contain only new JSON suffixes, and completed calls do not create duplicate names or false partial invocations.tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_tool_parsers.py: Tests cover incremental parsing across three chunk sizes, multiple invocations, argument reconstruction, and prefix emission. This is a unit test file, so integration test-list status is not applicable.Description
Fixes #19755.
When a MiniMax-M2 tool call is streamed over several chunks,
MiniMaxM2ToolParser.parse_streaming_incrementre-sent the whole arguments JSON every time a parameter completed, and when</invoke>arrived it emitted the function name again under the next tool index. A client concatenatingtool_calls[].function.argumentsdeltas received invalid JSON such as{"city": "Paris"}{"city": "Paris", "unit": "celsius"}plus a phantom second tool call. The partial-invoke regex could also match across an already-closed invoke and emit a garbage name. This change:
Non-streaming parsing is unchanged. A streamed vs. one-shot comparison over several chunk sizes now produces identical tool calls.
