I've spent a fair amount of time in exactly this code recently (#17731 fixed the b"None" drain loop and the unbound message in the writer's KeyboardInterrupt handler; #17735 the end-sentinel ordering in the producer's finally), so I read this closely. Overall this is the right shape of fix, and it's more complete than my two patches — happy to see both superseded if this lands.
What convinced me, from the code:
- The two actual deadlocks are both bounded now. Hang 1: the producer used the process-global
zmq.asyncio.Context.instance()with default linger (-1), so when the writer child died at startup (FileNotFoundErroron the log path),context.term()at asynchronous.py had unsent messages it would wait on forever. Dedicated context +LINGER=1000+asyncio.to_thread(term)kills that class entirely. Hang 2: the writer's blocking firstrecv_json()(processes.py:150 on current main) never returned when the producer died first; the 100mspollloop with astop_eventcheck bounds it. - Shutdown now terminates by construction: every wait on the path has a finite bound —
wait_foron the drain task (9s, and the 2×2×2+1 derivation checks out against the twoget_stats_async(2)reads), linger (1s),join(5s)+ kill, poll (100ms). Worst case is ~15s of degraded shutdown with warnings instead of an unkillable process. That's the property the issue actually asks for. - The latency one-liner is a real bug, not scope creep — verified on current main:
low_latency.py:191declares--iteration_logbut, unlikethroughput.py:422, never copies it intoexec_settings, soRuntimeConfig.iteration_logstaysNoneand the flag is silently dropped. - The
mkstempfd leak fix and the pre-flightopen("a")probe incapture()(fail in the parent before the run spends GPU-hours) are both correct, and the test actually runs in CI since it's registered inl0_cpu.ymlwithcpu_only.
Two genuine questions, not blockers:
mkdir(parents=True, exist_ok=True)silently materializes a mistyped directory — the reported repro is literally a one-character typo, and auto-create means the log quietly lands in the wrong place. Would failing fast with a clear error serve that user better? Either behavior preserves the run (the probe catches it pre-flight), so this is a design taste question for the maintainers.- In the writer's quiet-gap exit: after
stop_eventis set, a >100ms gap between messages breaks the loop with the "may be incomplete" warning. In the normal flowcapture()'sfinallyonly sets the event after the producer's drain finished, so the tail should already be queued — but if the parent ever reorders that, the warning fires spuriously. Probably worth a comment incapture()noting the ordering dependency.
Nice work — this closes out a nasty failure mode.
Thanks for the detailed review. Directory creation is intentional to match --report_json and the expected/suggested behavior in #18297. I also confirmed the shutdown ordering: async_benchmark() awaits the iteration worker’s final drain and end marker before the capture context exits and sets stop_event. The healthy tests verify exact delivery of 2,000 records, while the missing-end case covers the fallback warning. I agree an ordering comment could help future maintenance, but no functional change appears necessary. |

KeyboardInterruptin the writer. When the forked writer receives
KeyboardInterruptafter writing records, this handler logs the interruption and returns normally. The parent then sees exit code zero, so the bounded cleanup emits no incomplete-log warning even though the log can be truncated. Re-raise the exception so the parent observes a nonzero exit code and keeps the warning without restoring the unbounded join.Suggested fix

Dev Engineer Review
IterationWriter.capture()creates the log directory and opens the file before starting the writer. This exposes setup errors in the parent process. The writer polls for messages and exits after receiving the end marker or after one second without messages following shutdown. A five-second join limit prevents a stalled writer from blocking shutdown and warns when the log may be incomplete. The async producer uses a dedicated ZeroMQ context, finite socket linger, and bounded shutdown waiting. If the wait times out, it warns and continues backend shutdown. Latency configuration now forwards
iteration_logto executor settings. Test execution results are not available in the supplied evidence.QA Engineer Review
Added
tests/unittest/llmapi/test_iteration_logging.pyand listed it intests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml. The tests cover shutdown, ordered delivery, missing or invalid paths, absent or stalled consumers, writer failures, missing end markers, shared ZeroMQ context behavior, benchmark-body exceptions, and latency configuration. The test is listed in the CPU CI list. No manual-QA list entry is shown.Coverage verdict: sufficient. The tests cover key shutdown, path setup, and configuration behavior. End-to-end report generation is not covered by the described tests.

Fixes #18297.
trtllm-bench --iteration_logcould finish inference and then hang during shutdown, preventing report generation. A missing log directory killed the writer process while the producer retained messages indefinitely, and both producer and writer teardown had unbounded waits. This change creates and validates the log path in the parent, opens the file before the writer binds, drains queued records until the end marker or an idle stop, bounds producer and writer shutdown, uses finite ZeroMQ linger with an isolated context, and warns when a failure may truncate the log. It preserves awaited sends so a healthy writer does not silently drop iteration records.
Latency benchmarks also now forward
iteration_loginto executor settings so iteration statistics are enabled when the option is used.Test Coverage
Qwen/Qwen2.5-0.5B-Instruct, 8 requests, and 64 output tokens per request:The H100 run exercised the complete patch at
9467b327, including the ZeroMQ connection change. All three patched cases exited normally, wrote reports for all 8 requests, and produced parseable iteration logs.PR Checklist
