[TRTLLM-16673][feat] Add FastH3 support with VSA - #20648
Add support for FastVideo/FastVideo-FastH3-4-step-Preview-v1-VSA-DataFree through the MiniMax-H3 VisualGen pipeline, including its inference metadata, an example script, configs, and model documentation.
The VSA path preserves H3's packed text/audio/video attention semantics instead of applying the generic video-only VSA layout:
Load the checkpoint's trained attn.to_gate_compress weights.
Keep text/audio query rows dense and retain text/audio keys for video queries.
Select video tiles using pooled attention scores on 64-token (4, 4, 4) tiles, then execute the fine stage through TRTLLM PrimTS block-sparse attention or the existing CUTEDSL sparse kernel.
Merge the learned coarse contribution and restore the original packed sequence. Token-refiner attention stays dense.
VSA support is limited to single-GPU text-to-video-with-audio. The supplied TRTLLM and CUTEDSL VSA configs use BF16, 90% sparsity, and eager execution. Multi-GPU and reference/keyframe-conditioned VSA are not supported by this implementation. No C++ or CUDA kernel changes are included.
Validation
Pre-commit passed before submission with SKIP=type-check,clang-format,ruff-legacy pre-commit run -a.
test_minimax_h3_vsa.py and test_minimax_h3_transformer.py: 70 passed on October 26, 2026, including both attention backends.
Accuracy and output quality
LPIPS against official FastVideo VSA
Reference: official FastVideo FastH3 VSA (Triton, strict/eager). Both TRTLLM backend outputs use the same checkpoint revision, prompt, seed 42, BF16, 1344x768, 124 frames at 24 fps, four denoising forwards (five sigma points), 90% VSA sparsity, and 64-token tiles.
TRTLLM VSA backend

CUTEDSL
0.359126
Measured over all 124 decoded RGB frames at native resolution using FP32 LPIPS-Alex, inputs normalized to [-1, 1], and TF32 disabled. Audio is not scored. CUTEDSL is closer for this sample, but neither result establishes close numerical parity; backend and framework/source-version differences have not been isolated. No pass/fail threshold is imposed.

Maximum absolute error 0.0039
Regression parity
Passed at sparsities 0.0, 0.5, and 0.9; includes partial tiles, dense text/audio routes, and coarse-gate merge
Full generation
Seed 42; 1344x768; 124 frames at 24 fps; H.264 video with AAC audio
Visual inspection
Ten sampled frames showed a coherent astronaut moving through a neon-lit forest, without obvious corruption or blank output
The implementation adds H3 routing to the existing CUTEDSL sparse kernel while preserving dense text/audio queries, video-to-prefix routes, partial-tile masks, and the trained coarse-gate contribution. It also handles the kernel's paired-query-tile routing requirement. No C++ or CUDA kernel changes are needed.
Common settings: BF16, batch size 1, the example prompt above, seed 42, 1344x768, 124 frames. Each case has one full warm-up request followed by three measured requests. Values are medians; repeated requests reuse prompt conditioning. VSA uses 90% sparsity and 64-token tiles.

Dev Engineer Review
The change adds FastH3 manifest handling and VSA attention to the MiniMax-H3 pipeline, plus an example, configuration, documentation, and regression tests. VSA supports single-GPU text-to-video-with-audio requests with the TRTLLM or CUTEDSL backend. The pipeline rejects Ref2VA and keyframe-conditioned VSA requests.
Review the FastH3 defaults for regressions in other MiniMax-H3 checkpoints. Verify trained gate-weight loading, packed text/audio/video routing, and explicit errors for unsupported CUTEDSL shapes. The supplied CI comments report failed L0 MergeRequest PR pipelines but do not identify failing tests or provide a later passing pipeline. The reported 70 passing tests and performance measurements are author-reported and were not independently verified.
QA Engineer Review
The modified pipeline unit tests cover model registration, manifest-driven inference-step defaults, attention configuration, and checkpoint downloads. The VSA unit tests cover metadata geometry and CUDA attention behavior. The FastH3 integration test covers generation and LPIPS against a provisional golden fixture.
The pipeline and VSA unit tests are listed in test-db/l0_cpu.yml. The VSA unit test and FastH3 integration test are listed in test-db/l0_b200.yml. The supplied CI comments report pipeline failures without identifying which tests failed. Coverage verdict: needs follow-up.

Summary
FastH3 checkpoint and inference metadata tensorrt_llm/_torch/visual_gen/models/minimax_h3/pipeline_minimax_h3.py, tests/unittest/_torch/visual_gen/test_minimax_h3_pipeline.py
The pipeline registers FastH3 and reads inference metadata with a matching schema. It uses the manifest’s inference-step count when present and defaults to 28 otherwise. It configures VSA backends and sparsity from the manifest or defaults. Tests cover registration, metadata handling, and download patterns.
H3 VSA metadata and attention tensorrt_llm/_torch/visual_gen/models/minimax_h3/vsa.py, tensorrt_llm/_torch/visual_gen/models/minimax_h3/transformer_minimax_h3.py, tests/unittest/_torch/visual_gen/test_minimax_h3_vsa.py
Adds H3 VSA metadata construction and context helpers. TRTLLM and CUTEDSL paths combine fine and coarse attention using the learned gate. The transformer validates VSA backend and GPU-mapping requirements. Tests check metadata geometry and compare attention outputs with reference calculations.
VSA pipeline integration tensorrt_llm/_torch/visual_gen/models/minimax_h3/pipeline_minimax_h3.py, tensorrt_llm/_torch/visual_gen/models/minimax_h3/transformer_minimax_h3.py, tests/unittest/_torch/visual_gen/test_minimax_h3_pipeline.py
The pipeline builds metadata for eligible VSA requests and sets the VSA context around the transformer call. It rejects Ref2VA and keyframe requests when VSA is active.
FastH3 usage and model documentation docs/source/models/supported-models.md, docs/source/models/visual-generation.md, examples/visual_gen/README.md, examples/visual_gen/configs/fasth3-bf16-trtllm-vsa-1gpu.yaml, examples/visual_gen/models/fasth3.py
Adds FastH3 model and feature-matrix entries, documents VSA configuration and backend constraints, and provides a one-GPU configuration and generation example.
Truncated output can pass the regression test, and FastH3 quality lacks a calibrated independent reference check. Address both before merging.

blocks is rebuilt from the routes that h3_vsa_attention produced. The reference mask is derived from that same blocks. Both backends share the same selected computation. The test therefore checks kernel parity against the chosen routes. It does not check that the right tiles were chosen or that the right count was chosen for the sparsity.
A wrong topk count, a wrong score scaling, or a wrong top-k dimension would still pass at sparsity 0.5 and 0.9.
Compute the expected selection from the pooled scores inside run, using the existing qp, kp code. Then assert that blocks[..., prefix:] for video query rows equals that selection. Also assert that the per-row selected count equals max(1, ceil((1 - sparsity) * (ntiles - prefix))).
As per path instructions: "Flag assertions that would pass despite a plausible regression."

_cutedsl_fine duplicates the final prefix query tile when prefix is odd. For (7, (5, 5, 7)), this adds a query row to q2k_idx while variable_block_sizes still has one entry per original tile. The existing cases do not combine these conditions. The current assertions already compare CUTEDSL output with the reference on valid rows.

This LPIPS check compares the port against a video produced by the same TRTLLM VSA implementation. The golden metadata explicitly identifies it as a regression baseline with a provisional threshold, so a wrong packing order, compression-gate interpretation or denoising schedule can be present in both outputs and still pass. The masked-SDPA tests validate the routes this implementation selects, rather than the checkpoint's reference behavior. Could you add a FastVideo-generated baseline at the recorded checkpoint revision and measure/calibrate the LPIPS bound against it? Keep the current golden as a drift test if useful. Independent checkpoint parity is required for this PR.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The purpose of this test is to detect regressions on the future TRTLLM implementation. Hence, the golden should be generated by TRTLLM implementation, not by the FastVideo-generated baseline.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The TRTLLM golden can stay as the drift test. The missing check is whether this newly supported checkpoint matches FastVideo: a packing, compression-gate, or schedule error shared by the implementation and its golden passes the current test. VisualGen's ENGINEERING_CRITERIA.md section 1.5 requires a reference-framework baseline for each new checkpoint/task. Could you add a separate FastVideo comparison at the recorded revision, prompt, seed, and geometry, with a measured acceptance threshold? The independent parity check remains required for this PR.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The FastVideo and TRTLLM implementation comparison are displayed in the PR description, no obvious visual difference.
I don't think it is a good idea to add Fastvideo reference test to CI for three reasons:
FastVideo is not integrated into diffuser. We have to git clone and run Fastvideo to generate reference baseline video, creating unnecessary dependencies version conflict.
We could store a golden to bypass the real-time generation issue in 1, but the golden would be stale after several weeks because dependencies and code change reapidly, which changes generated video significantly.
Even if we decide to use a fixed goldens for an extended time, the test result is hard to understand. There are fluctuations and varations in the TRTLLM video generation, and given the current LPIPS score of 0.42 between TRTLLM implementation and official implementation, it is hard to interpret if the score is 0.38 or 0.45. The regression test makes sense because we can setup a threshold (0.1 for example) for max diff we allowed in TRTLLM.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The FastVideo comparison helps, but the reported LPIPS scores of 0.42 and 0.36 have no acceptance bound and the source of the difference is still unisolated. A pinned FastVideo-generated golden can provide the separate reference check without installing FastVideo in CI. Could you add that comparison with a justified acceptance threshold, keeping the TRTLLM golden for drift detection? If the difference is an intentional quality tradeoff, please document the accepted quality bound and its validation. This remains required for this PR.
Enforce the exact supported schema version fasth3-inference-contract-v1 instead of accepting any fasth3-* prefix.
The loader at lines 416–422 accepts any manifest schema starting with "fasth3-", but the intended contract is the exact version fasth3-inference-contract-v1. This prefix match permits incompatible future or variant schemas to be retained in self._fastvideo_inference and later accessed at line 320 for num_inference_steps. If an unsupported fasth3-* variant supplies a non-numeric or missing step field, the int() conversion fails without a clear diagnostic.
The repository tests cover only fasth3-inference-contract-v1 (line 485 in test_minimax_h3_pipeline.py), a missing step field (line 481), an absent manifest (line 477), and an unrelated schema other-model-v1 (line 489). No other fasth3-* schema is validated or documented as safe. Change the prefix check to an exact equality match.

Add pipeline tests for VSA keyframe and ref2va rejection.
The new guard at pipeline_minimax_h3.py:1045-1046 rejects ref2va and keyframes when VSA is active. No pipeline test enables VSA and checks either rejection. Add parametrized cases to test_minimax_h3_pipeline.py near the existing ref2va tests. Each case should set the attention backend to TRTLLM or CUTEDSL, set sparse attention to vsa, and run the denoising path with workflow="ref2va" or with keyframes. Each case should assert ValueError with the message MiniMax-H3 VSA currently supports text-to-video only. A regression that removes or reorders the guard would then fail the test.

Calling this a “4-step” checkpoint can lead users to select four scheduler steps. Describe it as a “four-forward distilled” checkpoint and state the five-step schedule.

The parameterized 0.5 case supplies vsa_sparsity through attention_kwargs, while the manifest fixture omits that field. Add a manifest value different from 0.9 with no explicit sparse configuration, then assert that the pipeline uses the manifest value.

Summary
Add support for
FastVideo/FastVideo-FastH3-4-step-Preview-v1-VSA-DataFreethrough the MiniMax-H3 VisualGen pipeline, including its inference metadata, an example script, configs, and model documentation. The VSA path preserves H3's packed text/audio/video attention semantics instead of applying the generic video-only VSA layout:
attn.to_gate_compressweights.(4, 4, 4)tiles, then execute the fine stage through TRTLLM PrimTS block-sparse attention or the existing CUTEDSL sparse kernel.VSA support is limited to single-GPU text-to-video-with-audio. The supplied TRTLLM and CUTEDSL VSA configs use BF16, 90% sparsity, and eager execution. Multi-GPU and reference/keyframe-conditioned VSA are not supported by this implementation. No C++ or CUDA kernel changes are included.

LPIPS against official FastVideo VSA
Reference: official FastVideo FastH3 VSA (Triton, strict/eager). Both TRTLLM backend outputs use the same checkpoint revision, prompt, seed 42, BF16, 1344x768, 124 frames at 24 fps, four denoising forwards (five sigma points), 90% VSA sparsity, and 64-token tiles.

Performance
For the same FastH3 checkpoint and four-forward schedule:
TRTLLM VSA is faster than CUTEDSL VSA for this shape. This is a single-prompt, sequential-run comparison, not a general backend ranking.
The pipeline and VSA unit tests are listed in
test-db/l0_cpu.yml. The VSA unit test and FastH3 integration test are listed intest-db/l0_b200.yml. The supplied CI comments report pipeline failures without identifying which tests failed. Coverage verdict: needs follow-up.Per-File QA Perspective
