Description

The native disaggregated REQUEST_INSTANCE_INFO endpoint returns RankInfo, including peer transfer metadata and memory capabilities. This change adds optional HMAC-SHA256 authentication before returning that information when internal_request_auth_key is configured.

Without a configured key, workers log a startup warning and retain the existing unauthenticated exchange. With a key, the proof binds a server-generated key to the RankInfo endpoint. Each proof attempt consumes its challenge, including malformed follow-ups. Challenges expire after 10 seconds; the bounded cache preserves live challenges and rejects new requests when full. Authentication failures fail only the affected transfer. For keyed multi-rank asynchronous receives, admission results travel through the existing symmetric status collective before receive buffers are published; per-request dispatch does not introduce a collective.

Both RankInfo replies share one deadline using the configured KV transfer timeout (60 seconds for direct callers without one). Unauthenticated clients can still exhaust the 4096-entry challenge cache with fresh identities and cause legitimate requests to fail as busy; bounded storage and expiration do not prevent sustained denial of service.

Key provisioning

Users configure only the existing internal_request_auth_key field with the same value on communicating peers:

  • The MPI worker launcher reads the key from the disaggregated serving config.
  • Separately launched HTTP/gRPC servers read the key from their own serving configs and forward it before constructing their workers. Both OpenEngine and SMG support this propagation.
  • CacheTransceiverConfig._rank_info_auth_key is private internal storage for that same key, not a second user-configured field. It is excluded from configuration dumps and preserved through worker serialization and model-default application.

This PR does not generate keys or add launcher scripts, CLI options, or public LLM API parameters. An absent key does not prevent native transceiver initialization.

Scope and compatibility

Scope is limited to optional authentication of REQUEST_INSTANCE_INFO; the attacker-controlled ctx_info_endpoint callback path is excluded. Without a configured key, the reported unauthenticated RankInfo disclosure remains exploitable.

gRPC serving now accepts and forwards internal_request_auth_key; previously, configuring this field in gRPC mode caused startup to fail.

When authentication is enabled, both communicating workers must support the authenticated protocol and use matching keys. A configured receiver never downgrades to an unauthenticated exchange. When neither peer configures a key, the legacy RankInfo exchange remains available, including interoperability with older workers.

Validation

  • 30 isolated authentication/admission/socket test cases passed against actual source methods without importing native TensorRT-LLM bindings.
  • Six isolated source-path checks passed for gRPC forwarding and private-key preservation through model-default processing.
  • Pre-commit passed with type-check, clang-format, and ruff-legacy skipped.
  • Regression coverage includes absent-key warnings, authenticated and unauthenticated exchanges, mismatched modes, invalid proofs, replay, challenge expiration/capacity, request-local failures, asymmetric receive fences, cancellation before publication, handshake timeouts, real ZeroMQ receive polling, gRPC propagation, and model-default key preservation.

Full-package, GPU serving, and multi-node MPI/SLURM validation remain pending. The gRPC CLI and model-default regression tests have not yet run in the full TensorRT-LLM environment.

Walkthrough

Native RankInfo exchange now uses a nonce-based HMAC challenge-response protocol. Serving paths resolve and pass authentication keys to native transceivers. Disaggregated launch examples provision shared keys in worker and server configurations.

Changes

RankInfo authentication

Layer / File(s) Summary
RankInfo challenge-response protocol
tensorrt_llm/_torch/disaggregation/native/transfer.py, tests/unittest/disaggregated/test_rank_info_auth.py
The server issues challenges and returns RankInfo only after validating the nonce and endpoint-bound HMAC tag. The receiver responds to challenges. TransferWorker passes the validated key to both components. Tests cover authentication outcomes and task failures.
Transceiver and serving key plumbing
tensorrt_llm/llmapi/llm_args.py, tensorrt_llm/_torch/disaggregation/transceiver.py, tensorrt_llm/commands/serve.py, tests/unittest/llmapi/test_disagg_telemetry_launcher.py, tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml
CacheTransceiverConfig carries the key, and KvCacheTransceiverV2 passes it to TransferWorker. Serving paths resolve keys from configuration, MPI broadcast, or a remote-client environment variable. Tests cover serialization and resolution.
Launcher key configuration
examples/disaggregated/slurm/benchmark/*, examples/disaggregated/slurm/simple_example/launch.slurm, examples/disaggregated/slurm/cache_transceiver_test/*, examples/ray_orchestrator/disaggregated/disagg_serving_local.sh, examples/disaggregated/README.md, tests/unittest/disaggregated/test_cache_transceiver_harness.py
Launch scripts generate or receive shared keys and pass them through worker and server configurations. Benchmark YAML files use a private writer; other launch paths use temporary configuration directories. The README describes provisioning and caller requirements.
Test key adoption
tests/unittest/disaggregated/*, tests/integration/defs/disaggregated/test_disaggregated_single_gpu.py, tests/integration/defs/llmapi/test_llm_api_connector.py
Existing disaggregated test setups now provide matching keys to workers and transceivers.

Test rejection of a different nonce with a valid tag.

The current tests do not detect removal of the cached-nonce comparison. Add a test that caches one challenge, submits a different 32-byte nonce with its correctly computed tag, and asserts AUTHENTICATION_ERROR, challenge consumption, and no RankInfo response in tests/unittest/disaggregated/test_rank_info_auth.py.

Test key resolution on a nonzero MPI rank.

Add a case in tests/unittest/llmapi/test_disagg_telemetry_launcher.py with Get_rank() returning 1. Assert that bcast receives None with root=0, that secrets.token_bytes is not called, and that the broadcast key is returned. This covers the worker branch and prevents workers from generating different keys.

Approving — the comments below are optional touch-ups, not blockers.

I re-checked each concern from the last round against the current code. All five are fixed:

  • Per-dispatch collective: removed. Admission votes now ride on the status allgather in check_gen_transfer_status, which poll_gen_transfers enters on every rank every tick. A rank whose fence isn't ready yet just leaves the rid out of its vote. Timeout-driven cancels are TP-synchronized in the coordinator, so a pending rid can't be dropped on only one rank. The sync path's single allgather runs in admitted-request order, which is rank-uniform.
  • Asymmetric test: test_rank_info_admission_waits_for_asymmetric_receive_fences covers skipped dispatch, duplicate dispatch, and a rejection on either rank.
  • Challenge cache DoS: the 10 s TTL is in, and the README documents the DoS trade-off.
  • Blocking receive: both reads now share one deadline, and the socket is cleaned up on timeout.
  • gRPC reversal: stated in both the README and the description.

Non-blocking items:

  1. Validation gap on a release branch. The description says GPU serving and multi-node runs are still pending. Before merge, please run at least one keyed TP>1 generation worker end to end, plus one mixed-key configuration to confirm it fails cleanly. The admission path has only been exercised with mocks and threads.
  2. Bug scope. The handshake authenticates only the generation worker to the context worker, and the ctx_info_endpoint callback path is excluded. The unkeyed default is also unchanged. So this mitigates part of nvbugs/6504651 rather than closing it. Please keep the bug open (or file a follow-up) for the remaining route and for making a key the default. See the inline comment on [transfer.py:3100](https://github.com/NVIDIA/TensorRT-LLM/pull/20796/files#diff-337dabe32d190384907e8c1330d67ed73ff63f41fbf0c1a347ff9f2ad18d4590R3100) for a cheap way to close the callback route in keyed deployments.
  3. Description hygiene. The report-token fixture updates in test_transfer_ownership_regressions.py are unrelated to authentication. A one-line mention in the description would save a future reader from wondering why they're here.
