[None][fix] MiniMax-M3: resolve an unprefilled prompt as outside reasoning - #20837
pranav-nvidia merged 3 commits into
Conversation
…oning A MiniMax-M3 prompt in adaptive mode ends with neither think tag; it now resolves to thinking off, and the resolved mode wins over the request's thinking_mode. An injected enable_thinking (Anthropic thinking.enabled) no longer makes the parser prepend a tag the template never prefilled. Parser fallback for unmarked prompts tensorrt_llm/llmapi/reasoning_parser.py |
BaseReasoningParser adds a resolve_unmarked_prompt hook that returns None by default. When neither reasoning marker ends the prompt tail, the factory calls this hook. |
MiniMax M3 mode selection and tests tensorrt_llm/llmapi/reasoning_parser.py, tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_reasoning_prompt_resolution.py, tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_render_core.py, tests/unittest/llmapi/test_reasoning_parser.py |
MiniMax M3 resolves unmarked prompts ending with its assistant header as thinking-off. A non-None enable_thinking value takes precedence over thinking_mode. Tests cover prompt-tail resolution, output splitting, and resolved-thinking context values. |

resolved MiniMax-M3 thinking mode is propagated to the parser arguments consumed
by the chat route, or have that route consume the standalone
reasoning_parser_kwargs metadata. Ensure MiniMaxM3ReasoningParser receives the
mode resolved from the rendered prompt, rather than stale enable_thinking or
thinking_mode request values, when rendering is skipped.

The new fallback misclassifies custom prompts ending with <mm:think>Let me think. as outside reasoning. With thinking_mode="enabled", generated hidden</mm:think>visible becomes visible content hiddenvisible. The parent correctly separates it.
Restrict the fallback to recognized adaptive headers and add a regression test.
…tant header `resolve_prefilled_thinking` refers a tail that ends with neither marker to the parser's `resolve_unmarked_prompt`. MiniMax-M3 answers False only for the template's `]~b]ai` generation prompt; a tail that prefills text after `<mm:think>` stays unresolved, so `thinking_mode` decides as before. Description
In adaptive mode, the MiniMax-M3 chat template ends the prompt at the assistant header
]~b]aiwithout prefilling<mm:think>or</mm:think>, and the model emits its own tags. The server resolves the reasoning mode from the end of the rendered prompt, but returned nothing for such a prompt, so the request's ownenable_thinkingreachedMiniMaxM3ReasoningParser. The template never reads that key. The Anthropic adapter sets it forthinking: {"type": "enabled"}, so the parser prepended<mm:think>to output that already opened with one, and the tag leaked into the thinking block. This change adds
BaseReasoningParser.resolve_unmarked_prompt, a hook the resolver calls for a prompt whose tail ends with neither marker. It returnsNoneby default, which keeps every other parser's behaviour.MiniMaxM3ReasoningParseranswersFalsewhen the tail ends with the template's]~b]aigeneration prompt, so an adaptive-mode prompt resolves to "starts outside reasoning". Any other unmarked tail, such as a custom template that prefills text after<mm:think>, stays unresolved and falls back tothinking_modeas before. The M3 parser now prefers the mode resolved from the rendered prompt overthinking_mode, which decides only when nothing was resolved. The server, the standalone renderer and the disaggregated relay already go through the resolver, so they pick this up unchanged. The public MiniMax-M3.1 template shares the header and the tags and prefills nothing in every mode, so the same hook covers it.One consequence is worth a reviewer's eye. The renderer now records
resolved_thinking={"minimax_m3": False}for an adaptive M3 prompt, so router token-id write-back is refused forminimax_m3workers, which is correct because an id-only request would otherwise fall back to the stale request flag.Test Coverage
tests/unittest/llmapi/test_reasoning_parser.py: M3 prompt-tail resolution: a prefilled opener or closer, the bare header (also after a prior turn rendered its own tags), and two unresolved tails, text prefilled after<mm:think>and a foreign header; the resolved mode wins overthinking_modein both directions.minimax_m3is removed from the list of parsers that never resolve from the prompt.tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_reasoning_prompt_resolution.py: an adaptive-mode prompt with an injectedenable_thinkingor an explicitthinking_modesplits the model's own tags; text prefilled after<mm:think>withthinking_mode: enabledstill splits on the model's close; the context worker relaysresolved_thinking=False.tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_render_core.py: a generic unmarked prompt records nothing; the M3 adaptive header records{"minimax_m3": False}.PR Checklist
Dev Engineer Review
resolve_prefilled_thinkingnow delegates unmarked prompt tails toresolve_unmarked_prompt. The base hook returnsNone; MiniMax-M3 resolves its unmarked assistant generation header to thinking-off. A resolved prompt mode takes precedence overthinking_mode. Review findings and test execution results are unavailable.QA Engineer Review
Three existing unit-test files changed. Reported cases cover prompt-tail resolution, mode precedence, adaptive-mode parsing, context-worker relay, and render-context recording. All three files appear in
tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml; no matching manual-QA list entries were found. Coverage verdict: sufficient based on the reported test cases; execution results are unavailable.Per-File QA Perspective
