[TRTLLM-17384][feat] Support shared-prefix attention for n-sample requests in FMHA - #20841
The patch adds an opt-in sampling_shared_prefix FMHA path for n-sample requests. It adds Triton kernels for shared-prefix and private-tail attention, KV writes, RoPE, and attention-state merging. Planner integration, FMHA cache-key separation, and CUDA graph attention variants connect the path to execution.
The patch also changes Qwen2 inheritance, sampler staging and seed assignment, executor response handling, KV-cache logging, and scheduler checks. These changes extend beyond shared-prefix attention and need compatibility and regression validation. A commit summary reports an SM90 fix for speculative out-of-bounds loads in shared-prefix Triton kernels. No test results are supplied, so correctness, API compatibility, and performance remain unverified.
QA Engineer Review
The patch adds tests for FMHA registry behavior, executor response handling, sampler staging, seed assignment, Qwen2 EAGLE-3, shared-prefix RoPE, and shared-prefix FMHA. Coverage described in the supplied summary includes reference attention math, planning and grouping, cache writes, CUDA graph replay, speculative decoding, and opt-in behavior.
The available test-list search found test_torch_sampler.py and test_in_graph_sampling.py in tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_a10.yml. It found no entries for the other changed test files in the searched CI or manual-QA lists. No test-list changes are reported. No test results are supplied. Coverage verdict: needs follow-up.

13 points — Review requires reasoning across shared/private page partitioning, softmax-state recombination, row permutations, current-token KV writes and CUDA graph planning. This warrants the complex algorithm/kernel anchor; substantial implementation and integration details remain unavailable.
Importance
Important — Introduces a substantial shared-prefix attention algorithm with custom Triton row/head mapping and direct paged-KV writes. Dispatch now depends on active planning state, and metadata preparation invokes per-step planning, creating sensitive numerical, cache-correctness and graph-execution contracts.

Test a parked victim alongside an unparked request.
With only a victim in the batch, this test also passes if response handling skips every request whenever any preemption is pending. Add a streaming request whose is_preemption_pending result is false. Assert that it still calls create_response while the victim remains active. As per path instructions, flag “overly weak” assertions that can miss a concrete regression.

Extend the test around `is_preemption_pending` to include both a parked victim
and an unparked streaming request, configuring their pending-preemption results
accordingly. Assert that `create_response` is called for the unparked request
while the victim remains active, so the test catches implementations that skip
all requests when any preemption is pending.
The repeated-slot path can receive seeded and unseeded rows together. The existing tests cover mixed distinct slots and repeated seeded slots, but not this combination. Add a TestRequestSeed case with seeded slot 0 and unseeded slot 1 in rows [0, 1, 0, 1]. Check the returned pairs and both counters across two calls. This would catch an offset or row-order regression in speculative sampling. As per path instructions, “Leave an INLINE review comment on the smallest relevant changed production-code hunk when a material test coverage gap exists.” (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Add a mixed seeded/unseeded repeated-slot case to TestRequestSeed using rows [0,
1, 0, 1], with slot 0 seeded and slot 1 unseeded. Across two calls, assert the
returned pairs and both counters to cover row ordering and offset behavior.
Add a test for the new _process_requests read-back shortcut.
Lines 2470-2483 add a new branch. If generation_requests equals staged.requests or staged.live_requests, the branch reuses staged.live_seq_slots_host and staged.single_step_greedy. The else branch re-derives both values from the live requests.
The changed tests call only stage_in_graph_sampling, get_sample_type and resolve_in_graph_sample_type. None of them reaches _process_requests. These cases are untested:
The padded-batch match.
The live-prefix match.
A mismatch that falls through to invalidate_in_graph_sampling().
A wrong cached live_seq_slots_host or single_step_greedy would give wrong destinations or skip the finish-reason kernel. A multi-token stop word would then go undetected. The existing tests would still pass in that case.
Add a CUDA test in tests/unittest/_torch/sampler/test_in_graph_sampling.py. The test should:
Stage a batch.
Call _process_requests with the padded list, the live prefix and a different batch.
Assert the returned seq_slots_host, the single_step_greedy flag, and that the mismatch case clears the staged state.
If _process_requests is already covered in another test file, point to that test.

lines 2470 - 2483:
Add a CUDA test that exercises the `_process_requests` staged read-back branch
after staging a batch: cover both the padded batch and live-prefix matches, and
verify the returned `seq_slots_host` and `single_step_greedy` values. Also
exercise a different batch and verify it falls through to
`invalidate_in_graph_sampling()` and clears the staged state; if
`_process_requests` is already covered elsewhere, extend that test instead.
Test the draft-token rejection that this field supports.
Line 74 adds py_draft_tokens to _Request. No changed test sets it to a non-empty value. The new rule in resolve_in_graph_sample_type returns SampleType.FULL for a request with draft tokens. That rule is therefore untested. If the check regresses, a speculative batch could be staged for the in-graph path. The tests would not catch it.
Covered behavior: the eligibility cache, the dummy-ordering rule, the staging shortcut and its invalidation, and the _StagedBatch contents.
Gaps: draft-token rejection and the _process_requests read-back shortcut.
CI list: the file already exists. Confirm that a list under tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/ still references it. The TestStaging tests need CUDA, so they belong in a single-GPU list such as l0_b200.yml.
Verdict: needs follow-up.

Add a test to TestTierSelection that admits a request with non-empty

Add coverage for FMHA cache separation and stale CUDA-graph metadata.
The new tests cover planner grouping, dense-reference accuracy, CUDA-graph replay, speculative decoding, eligibility, RoPE, and registry ordering. The attention directory is already included in l0_cpu.yml and GPU lists such as l0_b200.yml.
Two changed behaviors remain untested:
Select FMHA once without an active plan and once with an active plan. Assert that _FmhaCacheKey.shared_prefix_plan prevents reuse of the cached selection.
Call plan_step with CUDA-graph metadata whose captured plan is no longer eligible. Assert the expected RuntimeError.
The current plan_step tests use is_cuda_graph=False and do not exercise this error branch.
Coverage verdict: needs follow-up.

When an eligible active plan becomes inactive, FmhaManager.select must select the regular library instead of reusing the cached shared-prefix selection. The existing tests cover registry ordering and direct has_active_plan results, but not this cache transition. This is additional coverage for currently correct behavior, so classify it as a recommended refactor rather than a functional-correctness issue.

Restore a partial-RoPE case in the direct rope_qkv_inplace parameterized tests
by adding a case with head_dim 128 and rotary_dim 64, so the assertion checks
that dimensions beyond rotary_dim remain unchanged.
Exercise the open-gate path or narrow this test’s contract.
The two n=6 prompt groups have shared prefixes of 600 and 410 tokens. With TLLM_SAMPLING_SHARED_PREFIX_MIN_SHARED_TOKENS="100000", resolve_graph_variant selects the regular-kernel graph variant. The reference and candidate can therefore use the same attention path, so the token assertion can pass without checking shared-prefix output.
The test also enables only cuda_graph=True; its eager behavior is not covered. Add the open-gate case and remove the unsupported eager claim, or narrow the test name and docstring to the gated-off CUDA-graph fallback.

Add a sanitizer-backed SM90 regression test for step_last_len.
No test calls step_last_len directly. The CUDA graph replay test calls step_slots (tests/unittest/_torch/attention/test_sampling_shared_prefix_fmha.py:838), but it does not run under compute-sanitizer and has no SM90 gate. Neither inspected test file contains a sanitizer or SM90 check. An out-of-bounds read of mapped memory does not fail the existing torch.equal or reference assertions, so a pre-fix load could pass unnoticed.
Add a test that calls step_last_len with:
a row count that is not a multiple of 256, such as 12;
a non-identity perm that contains only valid row indices;
a base_len greater than the device KV length, so tail_last_page_len is negative.
Compare the output with kv_lens[perm] - base_len computed in PyTorch. Run the test under compute-sanitizer on SM90.
Do not put invalid entries in perm. The kernel loads kv_lens_ptr + source without a guard. An out-of-range perm entry is an invalid access in the fixed kernel too, so the test would fail for a reason unrelated to the fix.

Could we invalidate the grouping when the request-id tuple changes, even if IndexMapper returns the same slots? IndexMapper recycles slots after completion. A later n-sample batch can reuse the same cached first prompt page and page-count bucket while owning different private pages. _sampling_table_rows updates state.table_rows_key without invalidating state.grouping, so same_rows remains true and the rebuild is skipped. The next attention step then reads the previous requests' tail pages and writes new K/V through their stale write_page values. Please include request identity or allocation generation in the grouping key, and cover replacement requests with unchanged slots/first pages/lengths but different tails. Required for this PR.
…graphs, EAGLE-3 and Qwen2
Builds on the opt-in shared-prefix FMHA library (previous commit) and turns it
into an n-sample path, renamed sampling_shared_prefix (enable with
TLLM_FMHA_LIBS=+sampling_shared_prefix):
- n-sample requests: rows whose KV block tables start with identical pages are
grouped; each group's shared pages are read once and merged with every
row's private tail. KV cache manager V2 only; beam search is not supported
and is declined.
- CUDA graphs: the planned step is captured per attention variant; a fused
Triton kernel does prefix, tail and merge for up to 16 query tokens per row,
so EAGLE-3 verification steps (K draft tokens + 1) are served too. On SM100
the shared prefix runs on TRTLLM-Gen's context kernel (q_len >= 4).
- A cost-model gate, fitted to Nsight timings, decides per batch whether
sharing pays. The library stays off by default with draft tokens.
- Qwen2: fused RoPE inside the library (NeoX RoPE, no or linear scaling), and
Qwen2ForCausalLM becomes a one-model speculative target (EAGLE-3).
- Correctness fixes: size the eager FlashInfer float workspace from the plan;
no split-KV in the eager speculative tail plan; regrow the eager fused
workspace when the split count grows; fix SM90 speculative-load faults in
the Triton kernels.
- Host overhead: cheaper per-request work in PyExecutor._handle_responses,
in-graph sampling staging and the V2 scheduler.
Tests: unit tests against dense references for the kernels, planner, gate and
RoPE; end-to-end n-sample tests that diverge from the regular kernel only at
rounding near-ties.

…brary
- Accept only RoPE variants the library rotates itself, or a module that passes no
positional embedding; ALiBi, relative, GLM and deferred embeddings are applied inside
the attention op and are declined.
- Refresh the cached sliding-window crossing-log guard when the logger level changes.
- Draw the random inputs of the fused-kernel tests from seeded CUDA generators.
- The EAGLE-3 acceptance checks read accepted draft tokens in-process (LLM.get_stats
returns nothing here) and fail when no draft token is reported or accepted.

…ce, SM90 guard, Triton tuning
Additional SM90 (H100) fixes found during H100 validation of the
shared-prefix library:
1. Pad FlashInfer CUDA graph buffers in _graph_wrappers() (+64 / +1024
elements) to prevent speculative-load OOB on SM90 (Bug 4 — same root
cause as Bugs 1–3; FUSED=0 path only).
2. SM90 guard in _sampling_forward(): force Triton fused path (fused=True)
for spec-decode steps (q_len > 1) on SM90, because FlashInfer 0.6.18's
pre-compiled SM90 BatchPrefillWithPagedKVCacheWrapper kernel crashes at
60 rows × q_len=9. FUSED=0 still works for q_len=1 (non-spec) on SM90.
3. SM90 Triton tuning in _prefix_programs: eviction_policy="evict_last" on
K/V loads (L2 retention for shared prefix pages), num_warps=8 (from 4),
num_stages=3 (from 2) on SM90. Measured +1.3% gain at L1600.
4. Restore original _graph_float_workspace_bytes formula for spec-decode
tail (reverts an earlier over-aggressive reduction that caused internal
FlashInfer OOB on SM90 with FUSED=0).
Measured H100 perf (EAGLE-3, 3x20 rows, cuda-graph 1):
L600: off 13935, on 13768 (-1.3%) — gate declines
L1600: off 9540, on 9552 (+0.1%)
L4000: off 6978, on 7283 (+4.4%)

Adds flash_attn4_generation (TLLM_FMHA_LIBS=+flash_attn4_generation): fused NeoX RoPE,
paged K/V write of the step's tokens and FA4's paged forward (tile 64x128, 256 threads)
on a device-derived page table, CUDA-graph capturable. Declines draft layers, context,
quantized KV, trees, windows and sinks.

…Attention-4 on SM90
Fa4Prefix runs the shared pages of captured n-sample batches (q_len >= 4) through FA4's
non-causal varlen paged forward on the CtxPrefix request tables (chunks of 128 query
tokens, natural-log LSE converted to base 2 for the merge), with the Triton tail and the
context-kernel merge. Captured batches on this path default to 8 sharing groups.

…n SM90
The draft forward swaps the draft KV-cache manager and its block offsets into
the attention metadata, so the device page table and the pool view of the
FA4 generation library follow it; declining draft layers left them on the
multi-token XQA kernel. Nsight on H100 (Qwen2.5-7B, 120 rows, 4k-token
prompts): the first draft step (q_len K+1) took 515 us (K=3) / 990 us (K=8)
in XQA against ~190 us for FA4 on the same shape in the target layers, and
each later draft step ~260 us. TLLM_FLASH_ATTN4_GENERATION_DRAFT=0 keeps the
previous behaviour.

…e context-kernel path
The context-kernel (FA4 prefix on SM90) path launched one tail program per
(row, KV head). With a few rows left at the end of a generation that is a
handful of programs on 132 SMs: Nsight on H100 (Qwen2.5-7B, GQA 28/4,
EAGLE-3 K=3, 4 padded rows) shows the tail launch at 36 us per layer against
18 us for FlashAttention-4 over the whole row. Pick the split count from the
captured batch: split only a grid that fills less than half the SMs, up to
one wave, at most 8 (unchanged at full batch); the merge kernel already
reduces any number of tail slots. Measured on H100 (Qwen2.5-7B, EAGLE-3
K=3): splitting cut the library's target attention per step by 30-60% at
1-15 rows, while 2 splits at 16-60 rows (one to two waves of programs) were
5-8% slower, hence the half-wave threshold.
TLLM_SAMPLING_SHARED_PREFIX_CTX_TAIL_SPLITS fixes the split count.

…Attention-4
FmhaManager returned the first library that supports a whole batch, so a
mixed context+generation batch went to FallbackFmha (not phased) before a
CombinedFmha could be formed, and FA4 never served the generation rows of
mixed steps: under continuous request arrival most steps are mixed.
A phased generation library may now opt in (pairs_with_whole_batch_context,
set for flash_attn4_generation) to pair with a whole-batch library that
honours a context-only call (serves_context_only_input, set for FallbackFmha:
the thop op skips its generation stage for AttentionInputType.context_only).
CombinedFmha then runs the thop op on the mixed tensors as context-only and
the phased library on the generation rows. Batches whose generation rows are
not uniform stay on the whole-batch op. Selection without an opted-in
library is unchanged.
Mixed steps run eagerly, and an eager FA4 layer call costs ~110 us of host
time (rope, page table, KV write and FA4 launches) against one attention-op
call; on GSM8K-style traffic (short prompts, continuous arrival) serving the
generation rows of every mixed step with FA4 lowered throughput. The paired
generation library therefore decides per step (serves_mixed_generation_rows):
FA4 takes the rows when their mean KV length reaches
TLLM_FLASH_ATTN4_GENERATION_MIXED_MIN_KV (default 2048; 0 = always).

TrtllmAttention mixed batches (GQA 28/4, MHA 20/20; q_len 1/4/9; with and

the libraries to assert that FA4 serves exactly the generation rows and the
regular op only the context requests; the KV-length gate of mixed steps;

manager test metadata carries fmha_plan_caches, which the selection cache

… block that is never committed
The prefix-aware skip admits one of several context requests that would
contribute the same first new block and defers the rest by one iteration,
expecting the admitted one to commit the block. For the n samples of one
prompt with EAGLE-3 (H100, Qwen2.5-7B, 3 prompts x 40 samples of 4000
tokens) a probe trace shows the same key returned for the remaining samples
iteration after iteration while one sample per prompt is admitted: the
contributor finishes its context without committing that block, so every
deferral is pure delay. The 117 samples joined 3 per iteration over ~16
mixed steps, full batch at +744 ms instead of right after the prompts'
prefill.
Remember the first-chunk contributors of each schedule; when a duplicate
still probes a key whose contributor has left the context phase, mark the
key as not repaid and stop deferring on it (bounded LRU of 4096 keys).

…Attention-4 on SM90
On SM90 the library's shared prefix already runs through FlashAttention-4
(Fa4Prefix); the rows' private pages went through a Triton tail program per
(row, KV head). Serve them through FA4's paged decode as well (Fa4Tail): once
per step a device kernel builds each row's page table from its group's shared
run onward (batch order) and its KV length past the run; per layer the step's
K/V is written into those pages, FA4 attends them causally and returns the
output and LSE, and one merge kernel joins the prefix and tail states. The
prefix's LSE is merged in FA4's natural-log layout, which drops the per-layer
LSE conversion. TLLM_SAMPLING_SHARED_PREFIX_TAIL_KERNEL=triton keeps the
Triton tail.

cuBLASLt's heuristic picks one algorithm per GEMM shape, and at some token
counts it is far from the best one: on H100 the Qwen2.5-7B MLP down
projection takes 174 us at 576 tokens (64 rows x 9 tokens of an EAGLE-3 K=8
verify step) against 113 us for the fastest cuBLASLt algorithm.
With TLLM_CUDA_GRAPH_GEMM_TUNING=1, PyTorch TunableOp is on around the
generation CUDA-graph passes: the warmup pass benchmarks the cuBLAS/cuBLASLt
candidates of every GEMM shape it runs (unquantized linear layers, LM head),
the capture pass records the selected algorithms in the graphs, and TunableOp
is off again afterwards, so eager steps keep the heuristic. Results stay in
memory; a process that sets PYTORCH_TUNABLEOP_ENABLED keeps its own TunableOp
configuration.

… KV write, one page table per step
Per layer the FA4 generation library launched RoPE (Q and K in place), the
page-table derivation and the paged KV write before FA4 itself. RoPE and the
KV write are now one kernel (rope_write_kv_paged: Q rotated in place, the
rotated K and V written straight to the pool), and the page table of a
(KV manager, pool, rows) is derived once per forward by the first layer that
needs it and shared by the others through a per-step cache on the attention
metadata (fmha_step_caches, emptied by prepare()). The deriving layer redoes
it in every forward of the step, so a captured graph records it. Two
launches per layer instead of four in captured and eager steps.

SM90 FA4 has no split-KV: it launches one CTA per (row, KV head, 64-row tile
of the row's packed GQA queries) and walks the row's whole cache in it. A
batch of a few rows (the tail of an n-sample request, a lightly loaded
server) then runs a few dozen CTAs on 132 SMs; on H100 (Qwen2.5-7B, EAGLE-3
K=8, 1-4 rows, ~5k cached tokens) target attention took ~1.9 ms per step.
When the grid fills less than half the SMs, generation_splits cuts every row's
pages before the page of its first step token into up to one wave's worth of
non-causal chunks (at most 16): one FA4 call over rows x splits batch
entries with the queries replicated, one causal call over the rest of the
row (the step's tokens), and a merge kernel. The chunk tables are derived on
the device once per step from the shared page table, so the path is
capturable. TLLM_FLASH_ATTN4_GENERATION_SPLITS=1 turns it off, a larger value
fixes the split count.

… for RoPE and the tail KV write
Two changes to the library's FlashAttention-4 path (SM90, with Fa4Tail):
* Small batches: the FA4 prefix call launches about one CTA per (request,
KV head, 128-row query tile) and walks the group's whole prompt in it; a
captured batch of a few rows ran ~8 CTAs (H100, Qwen2.5-7B, K=8, 4 rows).
fa4_prefix_splits cuts each group's shared pages into up to one wave's worth
of runs (at most 8) when the query tiles fill less than half the SMs; the
queries are gathered once per run (_ctx_tables lays the requests out per
run) and the FA4-tail merge joins all prefix states with the tail state
(an empty run has LSE -inf). The private pages of such a batch go through
the split-KV generation call (generation_splits), which now also returns
the merged LSE.
* RoPE and the step's K/V write into the rows' private pages are one launch
(rope_write_kv_paged with page_lens: RoPE at the absolute positions, the
write at the slot of the private page table), so the tail call no longer
writes them.
The split-KV merge kernel runs one program per (token, block of 4 heads)
instead of one per token: a split small batch has a few tokens, and each
program walks every split (9 programs took 6.6 us per layer at 1 row, K=8).
Signed-off-by: Erin Ho <14718778+hchings@users.noreply.github.com>
…long
The split counts of small FlashAttention-4 batches are fixed per captured
batch size, so a short cache was cut as finely as a long one: on H100
(Qwen2.5-7B, K=8, 1-4 rows, ~1.6k cached tokens) the split steps were slower
than unsplit ones, while at ~5k tokens they were much faster. Chunks of the
generation split (split_tables, on the device from the actual lengths) and
runs of the library's prefix split (_ctx_tables) now hold at least
MIN_SPLIT_TOKENS (512) tokens, so a short cache uses fewer, non-empty splits
and the rest are empty (their CTAs exit at once and the merges skip them).

The planner reused its grouping while the batch kept the same block-table
slots, first pages and page counts. A slot recycled for a new request (or
a request whose pages were released and allocated again, e.g. after
preemption) can match all three while owning different private pages, so
the step read the previous pages and wrote its KV into them. The cache
check now compares every block-table entry the grouping read; entries past
a row's last page are ignored.

FallbackFmha is a PhasedFmha on main, so CombinedFmha ran every pairing
built from a whole-batch context library phase by phase and skipped the
uniform-rows and TLLM_FLASH_ATTN4_GENERATION_MIXED_MIN_KV checks. Mark
the pairing built by the manager as whole_batch_context: such a batch is
served by the whole-batch library alone unless the generation library
takes its generation rows; otherwise the context phase runs on the
whole-batch library and the generation phase on the phased library.

When KVCacheManagerV2._use_per_layer_page_tables is true, kv_cache_block_offsets is indexed by local layer, but this lookup still uses the lifecycle group. For example, full-attention layers 1 and 3 can share group 1 with SWA scratch reuse enabled; layer 3 then reads layer 1's converted offsets here, and the new cache also shares that table across both layers. FA4 reads and writes the wrong KV pages. Could we decline per-layer-table managers until table selection and conversion match the layer's get_buffers() view, and cover a nonzero layer in that layout? Required for this PR.
The second CUDA graph per batch size existed for the shared-prefix
library's size gate, which picked the regular kernel or the library per
batch. The gate moves into the library's per-step plan (a group that
does not pay is attended through the tail call), so one graph per batch
size serves both and cuda_graph_runner.py returns to main.

…red-prefix library
The target deployment (H100, EAGLE-3 n-sampling, CUDA graphs) runs the
shared and the private pages through FlashAttention-4. Remove the paths
it does not use: the FlashInfer prefix/tail calls, the Triton prefix and
tail tiles, the TRTLLM-Gen context-kernel prefix (SM100), check mode,
and the GB200 cost model. Batches without draft tokens, other GPUs and
fp16 take the regular kernel.
The size gate is now a per-group decision inside the step plan, fitted
on H100 (COST_MODEL: KV bytes a group saves per layer, 8 MB for MHA, any
for GQA; TLLM_SAMPLING_SHARED_PREFIX_MIN_SHARED_TOKENS still fixes a
token threshold instead).
Tests: the planner, grouping and FA4 kernel tests follow the FA4 path;
the whole-layer CUDA graph replay test runs through run_generation; the
end-to-end tests run EAGLE-3 n-sampling against FlashAttention-4 alone.

Dev Engineer Review
The patch adds an opt-in
sampling_shared_prefixFMHA path for n-sample requests.
