[#19861][fix] Fix FP8 KV cache for cross attention on the PyTorch backend - #20958
With an encoder-decoder model on the PyTorch backend and KvCacheConfig(dtype="fp8"), the cross-attention KV pool was overrun unless it held twice the blocks the in-flight requests needed; below that the process died with an illegal memory access or returned wrong tokens silently.
Two defects:
CrossAttention built its attention backend without the model's quant_config and never called update_quant_config when creating weights, unlike Attention. The op's quant mode therefore had no FP8-KV bit, getKvCacheElemSizeInBits returned 16, and every cache token was addressed at two bytes per element in a pool that _create_cross_kv_cache_manager had allocated at one byte per element from the same config. Reads and writes shared the doubled stride, which is why a pool with 2× the blocks worked and anything smaller ran past the allocation. CrossAttention now passes quant_config (and skip_create_weights_in_init) to create_attention and updates the backend in create_weights.
Once the cache is addressed correctly, the fused context FMHA for cross attention reads the encoder K/V back from the paged cross cache (Q_PAGED_KV is forced for cross attention), but fmhaParams.dataTypeKv is only set from the cache quant mode when paged-context FMHA is on. On a 16-bit model it reads the FP8 pool as bf16 and decodes garbage. AttentionOp::initialize now falls back to the unfused context path for cross attention with a quantized KV cache unless paged-context FMHA is on. The unfused path reads K/V from the 16-bit workspace and writes the cache through the quantizing transpose, so it is correct for every cache type. This costs the fused kernel's speed for the cross-attention context step, once per request; forcing FP8 context FMHA instead is not possible on sm89, where the E4M3 context kernels with 16-bit output exist only for head size 192. Teaching the fused kernel the cache type for cross attention would be a follow-up.
Test Coverage
New tests/unittest/_torch/attention/test_cross_attention_quant_config.py: builds CrossAttention with an FP8 KV quant config for both construction orders and asserts the backend's quant mode carries the FP8-KV bit; also the unquantized case.
tests/unittest/_torch/attention/test_attention_backends.py: the "no fp8 cross" filter is removed, so the backend matrix now covers FP8 cross cases. Those 14 cases fail on the fused path without the C++ change (TRT-LLM vs the vanilla golden off by ~1e5) and pass with it, on an L4.
GPU checks ran on one L4 with nvcr.io/nvidia/tensorrt-llm/release:1.4.0rc1 and this change ported (the Python file is byte-identical to main; the C++ change was rebuilt for sm_89 inside the release image). The issue's flan-t5-base table: fp8/768 blocks crashed before and decodes after; its token ids match the default-cache run exactly, and the three identical requests agree (the "first request differs" symptom is gone). The fallback warning appears once per cross-attention layer and not for the default cache. The same in fp32, where every layer takes the unfused path. On main the change is lint- and type-checked only, so CI is the first GPU run of this exact code.

Dev Engineer Review
CrossAttention now passes quant_config to backend creation and applies it during weight creation. This supports immediate and deferred initialization, but the available evidence does not establish runtime validation of both paths.
AttentionOp::initialize falls back to unfused context attention for cross attention with quantized KV cache, except when paged-context FMHA is enabled. This avoids the reported fused-path issue, but may reduce performance for affected configurations. The change does not establish a direct regression test for tight-pool overflow or exact-head GPU correctness.
QA Engineer Review
The change adds one quantization-config test file and expands the FP8 cross-attention precision matrix. Coverage includes quantization propagation, deferred weight creation, an unquantized case, and FP8 cross-attention behavior. The linked issue also reports illegal memory access and silently incorrect output with undersized pools; a direct pool-size regression case is not established here. Coverage verdict: needs follow-up. Test-list status is unavailable from the returned inspection output.
Per-File QA Perspective
tensorrt_llm/_torch/attention/cross_attention.py — Verify that immediate and deferred weight creation pass the model’s quantization config to the selected backend.
cpp/tensorrt_llm/thop/attentionOp.cpp — Verify the unfused fallback for quantized cross attention and confirm that paged-context FMHA retains the intended exception.
tests/unittest/_torch/attention/test_attention_backends.py — Retains FP8-KV cross-attention precision cases. Test-list status is unavailable from the returned inspection output.
tests/unittest/_torch/attention/test_cross_attention_quant_config.py — Covers FP8 quantization handoff, deferred weight creation, and unquantized configuration. Test-list status is unavailable from the returned inspection output.
5 points — Review requires tracing quantization through immediate and deferred backend initialization into native cache interpretation, plus checking fused/unfused eligibility. The coupled Python/C++ behavior and regression matrix justify 5 points; no attention kernel implementation changes.
Importance
Important — The quant_config handoff changes the mode used to interpret KV cache elements, while the native guard changes fused-context eligibility. These are sensitive cache correctness and prefill performance changes, despite the small implementation diff.

Summary
Pass quantization configuration to cross-attention tensorrt_llm/_torch/attention/cross_attention.py, tests/unittest/_torch/attention/test_cross_attention_quant_config.py, tests/unittest/_torch/attention/test_attention_backends.py
CrossAttention passes its quantization configuration to backend creation and updates the backend after deferred weight creation. Tests check FP8 and unquantized configurations. Backend cases now include cross-attention FP8-KV variants.
Select the context-FMHA fallback cpp/tensorrt_llm/thop/attentionOp.cpp
For quantized cross-attention KV caches, MHA logs a warning and uses the unfused path unless paged KV cache and paged Context FMHA are both enabled.
The change passes the quantization config to cross-attention and falls back to the unfused context path for quantized cross-attention KV caches. No blocking issues remain. Extra end-to-end tight-pool test coverage has been suggested separately but is not required for merge.

Explanation
The title "[#19861][fix] Fix FP8 KV cache for cross attention on the PyTorch backend" follows the repository template with a GitHub issue ID and the [fix] type. It names the main change: the FP8 KV cache addressing fix for cross attention on the PyTorch backend. The changeset matches this. CrossAttention now passes quant_config to create_attention and updates the backend in create_weights. AttentionOp::initialize adds an unfused fallback for cross attention with a quantized KV cache. The tests cover FP8 cross-attention propagation and the backend matrix.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description is thorough and largely follows the template. It has a clear Description section that explains the two root causes and the fixes. It has a Test Coverage section that names the new unit test file, the expanded backend matrix, and the L4 validation. The PR Checklist is present, with the title and tests items checked. Two gaps remain. The template's '@coderabbitai summary' header and the 'Please explain...' comment are not an issue, but the description does not state an API-compatibility label decision, and the CI-run item is unchecked. The description also does not address the reviewer request for a small-pool overflow regression test; the author said they would add one only if requested. Neither gap makes the description incomplete.

Explanation
The PR meets the coding requirements in #19861. CrossAttention passes quant_config and deferred-weight settings to create_attention, then applies the configuration in create_weights. This aligns cross-cache addressing with the FP8 allocation. AttentionOp::initialize uses the unfused context path for cross attention with a quantized KV cache unless paged-context FMHA is enabled. The new tests cover configuration propagation, deferred creation, unquantized behavior, and FP8 cross-attention backend cases.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changed files remain within #19861. The Python change fixes cross-attention quantization propagation. The C++ change prevents incorrect reads from a quantized cross-attention cache. The tests verify these changes and enable relevant FP8 coverage. No unrelated behavior is introduced.

Add a small-pool FP8 cross-attention regression case.
The same_kv and diff_kv cases use the default overprovisioned pool. For the default lengths, that pool has 99 blocks, while the requests require 38 blocks. A regression that fails only with a pool sized for actual in-flight requests can therefore pass. The changed quantization tests check propagation only, and run_case executes each backend once; no changed test covers this allocation boundary.
Add an FP8 cross-attention case with a pool sufficient for the requests but smaller than twice the required blocks. Assert that the forward pass completes and matches the golden output.

test_attention_backend invokes run_case once. The runner compares one backend result with the Vanilla result; it does not submit two identical requests. same_kv varies KV lengths and does not repeat a request. The quantization tests only check configuration propagation.
A second-request output regression can therefore pass these tests. Add the check where the fresh-cache/request lifecycle is available. Do not model it by repeating same_kv in this backend harness.

On the two nitpicks: the backend matrix passes one quant config to both the pool and the backend, so a small-pool case there cannot reproduce the module-level mismatch this PR fixes; the new unit test pins that handoff and the FP8 cross matrix cases cover the fallback against the golden. A repeated-request check needs the request lifecycle, which would be a new encoder-decoder modeling test with an FP8 cache and a tight pool. Happy to add one if the reviewers want it.
CrossAttention built its attention backend without the model's
quant_config and never updated it when creating weights, unlike
Attention. The op's quant mode therefore had no FP8-KV bit and
addressed the cross pool at two bytes per element, while the pool
had been allocated at one byte per element from the same config.
A request only fit once the pool held twice the blocks it needed;
below that the op ran past the allocation.
Pass the config to create_attention and update the backend in
create_weights. Add a test that pins the handoff for both
construction orders.

…ss KV cache
The fused context FMHA for cross attention reads the encoder K/V back
from the paged cross cache, but its KV data type is set from the cache
quant mode only when paged-context FMHA is on. On a 16-bit model it
read an FP8 cross pool as bf16 and decoded wrong tokens. Fall back to
the unfused context path in that case: it reads K/V from the 16-bit
workspace and writes the cache through the quantizing transpose.
Let the backend test matrix cover FP8 cross cases.

…est when FlashInfer is missing
Backend selection returns the TRTLLM backend when FlashInfer is not
installed, so the FLASHINFER case could pass without testing FlashInfer.
Skip it in that situation and assert which backend class ran.
