[TRTLLM-15944][feat] Enable SWA scratch reuse for Gemma3/4 with TRTLLM attention - #20971
Enable SWA scratch-slot reuse by default for Gemma3 and Gemma4 text models using the TRTLLM attention backend and KV cache manager V2. Long prefills can reuse temporary KV storage across sliding-window layers, reducing KV memory pressure.
This change corrects per-layer page-table extents so attention can read every valid page. It also avoids uploading the full page table for batches without active scratch slots.
Explicit opt-out remains supported through kv_cache_config.enable_swa_scratch_reuse=False. Defaults remain off for multimodal models and Gemma4 external shared-KV MTP. FlashInfer rejects explicit scratch enablement, and Gemma4 validates shared-KV writer ordering.
Test coverage
Added tests cover:
Scratch ON/OFF output parity across prefill, decode, cached-prefix reuse and CUDA-graph replay.
Page-table conversion and bounds, including full pools, pool resizing and quantized KV caches.
Model defaults, explicit opt-out and unsupported configurations.
GPU coverage is registered in the B200 and H100 L0 test lists.
B200 throughput experiment
Gemma4
Cap total GPU bytes available to the KV cache to create memory pressure. Compare scratch ON versus OFF within each setup:
Cap only: Leave pool_ratio unset and use free_gpu_memory_fraction; the initial pool split assumes an average ISL of 2K.
Cap + pinned ratio: Pin pool_ratio using an expected ISL of 8K.
All five Gemma4 variants use their default TRTLLM attention backend. Percentages show throughput change with scratch ON versus OFF.

Dev Engineer Review
The change adds bounded per-layer KV page-table conversion and a pinned-host-table copy path for batches without scratch slots. It also adjusts page-index bounds for per-layer tables. Verify converter offsets, pool resizing, and copy behavior when no scratch slots are active.
Gemma3 and Gemma4 text models enable SWA scratch reuse under specified backend and device conditions. Multimodal Gemma4 and external shared-KV MTP keep it disabled. FlashInfer rejects enabled reuse, and Gemma4 validates shared-KV writer ordering. Verify explicit backend overrides and the opt-out. Review severity counts are unavailable. CI reported one successful run and one failed run; failure details were not supplied.
QA Engineer Review
Tests cover per-layer page-table conversion and bounds, scratch-slot behavior, pool resizing, FlashInfer rejection, Gemma4 shared-KV validation, model defaults, and output parity across prefill, decode, cached-prefix reuse, and CUDA-graph replay.
The B200 CI list includes test_swa_scratch_page_tables.py, test_gemma_swa_scratch.py, and test_modeling_gemma4.py. The H100 CI list includes test_gemma_swa_scratch.py. 8 points — Adds a KV transfer path supporting scratch reuse alongside an extent correction and backend validation. Review requires tracing pool-root addressing across CUDA, Python conversion, bindings and FMHA. K/V role mapping, sentinel preservation, expansion and bounded copies warrant deep contract review; omitted wiring limits certainty.
Importance
Important — The new gather changes how attention receives physical KV page indices, while FMHA changes their valid extent using layer_offset * expansion. Incorrect translation or bounds can select invalid KV storage; bypassing full-table uploads also changes a performance-sensitive path.
A CUDA utility and Python binding convert selected block offsets using per-layer pool IDs, scales, and offsets. The cache manager stores converter data and selects pinned-host, compiled no-scratch, or scratch-aware copy paths.
Page-table bounds and validation tensorrt_llm/_torch/attention/backends/fmha/phased.py, tests/unittest/_torch/attention/*, tests/unittest/_torch/executor/kv_cache/test_kv_cache_v2_scheduler.py
Per-layer page bounds account for converter offsets. Tests cover page-table values, bounds, resize behavior, copy limits, and attention page access.
Gemma defaults set scratch reuse according to backend, platform, and cache configuration. FlashInfer and unsupported TRT-LLM configurations reject the option. Gemma 4 checks shared-KV scratch sources. Tests cover defaults and attention constraints.
Gemma tests compare execution with scratch reuse enabled and disabled across prefill, decode, graph capture, cache dtypes, and reused prefixes. Integration lists include the scratch tests.
In optimized Python runs, an invalid shared-KV scratch source can bypass validation. Replace the assertion with an active error check; otherwise the remaining risk is bounded to that configuration.

Measure repeated host reads in the per-layer kernel.
The kernel reads pinned host indices once for every output layer and role. The selected pool can vary by layer and role, so only entries that select the same pool and row repeat the same source read.
This path can generate substantial host traffic for batches with many layers and long sequences. Measure it on a decode-heavy batch. If it matters, gather each (pool, row, block) once into device memory, then apply the layer-specific scale and offset from device memory.

Requesting changes on the new scratch default (the page-table code itself looks right): it drops shared-prefix reuse for SWA layers and moves Gemma3 text models to per-layer tables. It also needs a rebase and CI re-run on top of #20736, which merged today.
…h TRTLLM attention backend
Enable scratch reuse for Gemma3 and Gemma4 text models using TRTLLM
attention. Preserve explicit overrides and keep multimodal and external
shared-KV MTP defaults disabled.
Use pool-root extents for per-layer attention views and gather page tables
directly from pinned host memory with bounded writes. Reject unsupported
FlashInfer scratch use and validate Gemma4 shared-KV writer ordering.
Add coverage for default resolution, page-table bounds, prefix reuse,
prefill/decode parity, quantized KV caches, and CUDA graph replay.
Register GPU tests on B200 and H100.
