Dev Engineer Review

The PR replaces separate step-input packing and H2D skip-cache utilities with device_copy, a model-declared copy plan. The plan supports named copy sites, staged copy merging, flush barriers, eager-copy fallback, and optional check-mode validation. The MiniMax-M3 TP4 and TP8 plans declare merge sites and flush after the BLOCK_TABLE copy.

Copy suppression now depends on buffer owners recording unchanged values. Callers across decoder, attention, Mamba, and speculative paths use explicit copy sites. Review should verify that each copy site has a consistent owner and that each flush occurs before a consumer reads the destination. The MiniMax-M3 block-table barrier and skipped-copy checks are important safeguards.

The PR also moves MSA KV-update code into the shared sparse-attention backend and removes MSA-specific runtime hooks. This changes where MSA behavior is selected and removes prior hook and helper APIs. Callers outside the changed paths may need migration if they depend on the removed APIs.

No test-list files changed. The supplied summary reports test results, but this review did not independently verify completed checks on the current head.

QA Engineer Review

The change adds broad device_copy and buffer tests, updates decoder, MSA, Mamba, and speculative-copy tests, and removes the old step_inputs and H2D-cache test modules. MSA KV-update tests move from the model-specific suite to the shared sparse-MSA suite. The changed tests are unit tests; no matching integration-test list entries are expected. No files under tests/integration/test_lists/ changed.

Coverage verdict: needs follow-up. The new suite covers copy routing, ordering, fallback, discard, check mode, and owner-side skipping. Removed test modules covered staging, cache behavior, graph capture, and thread isolation; verify that their essential cases remain covered by the replacement tests. Confirm behavior on supported devices and graph-capture paths through completed CI.

Per-File QA Perspective

Description

Problem

Between two decode CUDA graph replays, the next step's inputs and metadata reach their graph-stable device buffers as a chain of tiny copies: positions, KV lengths, page tables and the graph runner's static inputs. Each copy is a separate operation on the stream the next graph waits for, so the GPU idles for the whole chain.

#20306 removed that idle time for MiniMax-M3 with two mechanisms behind M3-specific RuntimeHooks flags:

  • a step-input pack (step_inputs.py): one upload plus one scatter right before the replay;
  • a skip-unchanged cache (h2d_cache.py).

The decision of which copy may be packed was spread over if branches and pack= arguments at each call site, so another model could not reuse the mechanism without adding more flags and branches to shared code. RuntimeHooks had also collected options that belong to a single component (MSA's decode shortcuts, attention-metadata upload skipping), plus one field nothing read.

Design

Two questions decide what happens to a per-step copy, and each has its own owner.

When the copy must land: the copy plan, declared by the model. It depends on the destination's readers, which the model chose.

  • Every such copy names its call site and goes through device_copy.copy(site, dst, src) (or fill_tail). site is a CopySiteEnum member that declares its direction (H2D, D2D, FILL); the copier checks the source device against it.
  • Shared sites live in CopySite: graph-runner inputs, decoder inputs, TRTLLM attention, and the DeviceCopyBuffer uploads of the speculative metadata, samplers and Mamba managers. MSA names its own sites with MsaCopySite.
  • A model sets copy_plan = CopyPlan(merge={...}, flush_after={...}).
    • merge: staged into the step's pack. A flush issues one upload of [descriptors | data] and one trtllm::device_copy_scatter launch. A merged copy lands before the next barrier; the graph replay is the step's final barrier.
    • flush_after (⊆ merge): barrier sites. When a call through one stages its copy, the pack is flushed right after that call, so the copy has landed before anything that runs next.
      • A call whose copy is skipped as unchanged, or runs eagerly, adds no barrier.
      • Only the anchor's own write is guaranteed; a reader that needs other merged data anchors on those sites too.
      • Several barriers in a step append segments in the same pinned slot and device staging buffer. The 4-slot ring advances once per step, so barriers never wait on the host.
  • Listing a site in merge asserts that no device work reads or writes the destination before its barrier. A site not in the plan, and every site of a model without a plan, is a plain dst.copy_(src, non_blocking=True).

Whether the copy is needed at all: the buffer owner. It depends on the values and on who else writes the buffer.

  • The owner passes unchanged=True when the destination already holds what the call would write; the copy is not issued. unchanged=True is refused during CUDA graph capture.
  • device_copy.DeviceCopyBuffer(tensor, *, site, pin_memory=..., snapshot=True) is the owner-side record. It moves here from tensorrt_llm/_device_copy.py.
    • update(host, force=False) compares with what its last issued copy wrote (prefix matching, as before), then calls device_copy.copy(site, ..., unchanged=..., on_drop=self.invalidate). It records only an issued copy, and a merged copy whose pack is discarded drops the record.
    • update(host, view=v) writes a view of the storage and is keyed by its geometry.
    • fill_tail(site, start, value) records a tail fill as (view, start, value).
    • The host values are snapshotted only when the copy runs eagerly; a merged copy is snapshotted by the pack.
    • During CUDA graph capture, an update is always issued and not recorded.
    • site=None makes a record-only buffer, for owners with their own copy path (the MSA KV manager's block-offset gather).
  • Attention metadata: whether its uploads skip is the metadata class's own choice, TrtllmAttentionMetadata.skips_unchanged_uploads.
    • It is False on the base class and True for MiniMax-M3 MSA.
    • Such a class keeps one DeviceCopyBuffer per destination, shared by its CUDA-graph metadata copies, and the runner gives those copies private buffers.
    • The MSA metadata also arms its KV manager's block-offset skip.

Check mode.

  • device_copy.CHECK_MODE is the one switch. It is read once from TLLM_DEVICE_COPY_CHECK=1, or from TLLM_DEBUG_MODE=1, which used to verify DeviceCopyBuffer's skipped copies. The unit-test conftest turns it on.
  • It verifies:
    • that no merged destination is written before its flush;
    • that no merged D2D source changes before its flush;
    • that every unchanged copy or fill, including every upload a DeviceCopyBuffer skips, matches the device.
  • A reader before the replay asserts that its barrier fired:
    if device_copy.CHECK_MODE:
        device_copy.expect_landed(MsaCopySite.BLOCK_TABLE, block_table)
    expect_landed names the anchor site when merged bytes are still staged, and raises if called with check mode off.

RuntimeHooks now holds only engine step-loop behaviour a model opts into:

  • decode_prologue, executor_events, spec_step_fold;
  • loop_on_execution_stream and merge_tuned_tactics_across_ranks. These two stay model opt-ins: neither is provably semantics-preserving for every model.

MSA's decode shortcuts are now MSA's own behaviour in every configuration, including the legacy modeling_minimaxm3 path:

  • identity selections for short steps; the metadata class names the short/long decode graph split;
  • prefix sums staged from the host;
  • pool views built once;
  • the one-launch KV-length update. It moves from the MiniMax-M3 modeling_v2 targets into sparse/minimax_m3/kernels/msa_kv_update.py and falls back to the torch formulation when the op or its operands do not qualify.
What Where

Shared call sites cuda_graph_runner.py (graph inputs and the final flush), engine/runners/decoder/inputs.py, attention/backends/trtllm.py
DeviceCopyBuffer users with a site (none merged) speculative/eagle3.py, dflash.py, spec_sampler_base.py, kv_cache/mamba_cache_manager/{legacy,mamba_cache_manager_v2}.py, modules/mamba/mamba2_metadata.py, engine/runners/decoder/inputs.py
MSA sites, owner-side skips and decode shortcuts MsaCopySite in sparse/minimax_m3/common.py; msa_backend.py; cache_manager.py; kernels/msa_kv_update.py
Where the runtime reads the plan, hooks and metadata class DecoderRunner (copy_plan_of, begin, flush, private_metadata_buffers, _short_long_seq_len_threshold)
Scatter kernel and op (moved out of minimaxM3/) cpp/tensorrt_llm/kernels/deviceCopyScatter.cu, thop/deviceCopyScatterOp.cpp
A model's plan _COPY_PLAN in both minimax_m3_nvfp4__sm_103__{tp4,tp8}/modeling.py

MiniMax-M3 modeling_v2.

  • Both targets merge the graph inputs, decoder positions, attention KV lengths and the host-staged MSA tables.
  • MsaCopySite.BLOCK_TABLE is merged and is a flush_after barrier: on a sub-page pool, write_subpage_block_table reads it on the device before the replay, on exactly the steps where its copy was issued. The reader asserts it with expect_landed.
  • Steady decode issues one segment per step, and two on the ~1% of steps where the block table changes.

Removed.

  • step_inputs.py and h2d_cache.py.
  • tensorrt_llm/_device_copy.py (its content moved into device_copy.py).
  • RuntimeHooks fields: pack_step_inputs, skip_unchanged_h2d, skips_unchanged_metadata_uploads, skip_greedy_rng_upload, msa.
  • MsaRuntimePolicy, MsaKvUpdate and configure_decode_shortcuts.
  • skip_greedy_rng_upload was never read: all-greedy one-model batches already skip the Philox uploads for every model.

Adding a model

  1. Declare a copy_plan from the readers of each destination:
    • merge what no device work touches before the replay;
    • add a flush_after barrier on each copy that has an eager reader.
  2. Let each buffer owner decide whether its uploads may be skipped: a DeviceCopyBuffer with the copy's site, or skips_unchanged_uploads on an attention metadata class whose buffers only its own uploads write.
  3. Put component behaviour in the component (attention metadata or backend, KV cache manager), and keep RuntimeHooks for step-loop choices.
  4. Run once with TLLM_DEVICE_COPY_CHECK=1.

Behaviour changes outside MiniMax-M3 modeling_v2

Legacy modeling_minimaxm3 with implementation="msa" now gets MSA's decode shortcuts.

  • Perf, TP4 no spec:
    • c1 TPOT 6.10 against 6.57 ms (−7%), TTFT 105 against 124 ms;
    • c4 TPOT 7.65 ms; main measured 7.64–8.04 ms across instances.
  • Perf, Eagle3: TPOT −6%.
  • Graphs and memory: twice the decode CUDA graphs (short and long families), about +0.25 GiB non-torch memory per GPU and about −0.15 GiB of KV cache, with twice the graph capture time.
  • Accuracy: GSM8K 89.7 against 89.8 on main.

DeviceCopyBuffer users.

  • During CUDA graph capture an update is now always issued instead of being skipped when unchanged. No update ran under capture in the speculative, Mamba or Kimi unit-test suites.
  • TLLM_DEBUG_MODE=1 now also turns on the copy plan's merge checks, and a violation raises a RuntimeError naming the site instead of an AssertionError.

Test Coverage

All results are on GB300 (sm_103), container pytorch-26.09-...-202611020300-19783.

Unit tests.

  • tests/unittest/_torch/pyexecutor/test_device_copy.py covers:
    • plan validation (including flush_after ⊆ merge);
    • merging and ordering, with fallbacks for capacity and descriptors;
    • barriers: staged, skipped, eager and unstageable anchors; repeated anchors; multi-segment steps without a host stall; capacity across segments; H2D/D2D order across segments;
    • unchanged (returns False, refused during capture, verified in check mode);
    • on_drop on discard;
    • per-storage DeviceCopyBuffer owners: views, overlap, snapshots, dtype, capture, tail records;
    • CHECK_MODE and expect_landed;
    • copier isolation across contexts and threads.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/pyexecutor/test_device_copy_buffer.py (ported) covers DeviceCopyBuffer's:
    • prefix records and force;
    • site routing;
    • record-only buffers;
    • a failed copy leaving no record, and dropped merged copies;
    • eager-only snapshots;
    • view keys;
    • tail fills;
    • the single check switch, including TLLM_DEBUG_MODE.
  • test_msa_runtime_policy.py covers:
    • MSA's own defaults;
    • CUDA-graph metadata copies sharing one set of DeviceCopyBuffers.
  • test_msa_kv_update.py covers the fused KV-length update against its reference, up to batch 300, and its decline cases.
  • Results:
    • device-copy, runtime-hooks, decoder-runner and MSA suites together: 763 passed, 2 skipped;
    • MiniMax-M3 modeling_v2 TP4 1222 passed, TP8 1061 passed (the skips need two trays);
    • Qwen4 exp 762 passed; GLM-5.2 447 passed;
    • Mamba 2063 passed (after the one expectation fix); Kimi 535 passed; decoder engine 865 passed.
  • _torch/speculative: 1637 passed. The 52 failures are the same tests that fail on main (checkpoints absent here, and one step-fold test that fails on main).

End to end, MiniMax-M3 NVFP4 modeling_v2, TP4, TLLM_DEVICE_COPY_CHECK=1, chat GSM8K.

Legacy MiniMax-M3 MSA + Eagle3, TP4, TLLM_DEVICE_COPY_CHECK=1: no violations. This run covers the Eagle3, gather-id and spec-sampler sites and the fused KV-length update.

Accuracy.

  • GSM8K at TP4: 89.462, identical to main (reference 88.704).
  • Legacy MiniMax-M3 MSA TP4: 89.727 (main 89.841).

Performance against main (#20306's step_inputs / h2d_cache).

  • Setup: TP4, no speculation, 16 × 512-token requests, same node, runs alternated.

  • c1:

    • TPOT 2.028 ± 0.011 against 2.033 ± 0.009 ms;
    • ITL median 2.008 ms in both.
  • c4: ITL median 2.949 against 2.945 ms.

  • Host time of the copy path: about 230 against 210 µs per step. The ~20 µs difference covers:

    • the per-copy direction check;
    • the H2D-after-D2D ordering check;
    • the owner-side record keys.

    It is hidden at TP4, where decode is GPU-bound.

  • Unifying DeviceCopyBuffer changes neither step time (c1 2.031 against 2.026 ms) nor host time (229.5 against 227.0 µs).

Not covered end to end here:

  • DFlash/DSpark and Mamba-hybrid models: there are no usable checkpoints on this cluster.
  • The M3 modeling_v2 Eagle3 accuracy test: it fails on main too, in Eagle3OneModelWorker._forward_draft_loop.

Really like this design! Would you mind sharing a quick before/after step time vs #20306 (e.g. TP4 c1)? Just want to make sure the generic path doesn't add host overhead. Thanks!

Thanks! Measured against #20306 (now on main) on MiniMax-M3 NVFP4 TP4, c1, no spec, same node/container, alternating runs (16 req x 512 tokens per round):

rounds TPOT (ms) median ITL (ms) throughput (tok/s)
main (#20306) 12 2.013 ± 0.006 1.996 463.5 ± 1.2
this PR 9 2.016 ± 0.007 1.996 463.6 ± 1.3

No measurable step-time impact: decode is GPU-bound here (graph ~1.994 ms vs ITL 1.996 ms). nsys also shows the same GPU work between replays on both (same 9 non-graph ops, ~24 us). With TLLM_DEVICE_COPY_CHECK=1, per-site defer/skip counts match main exactly, and GSM8K is identical (89.46 on both).

Update after the latest push (merge/flush_after barriers, owner-side skips, DeviceCopyBuffer unification), re-measured against main (#20306) on MiniMax-M3 NVFP4 TP4, no spec, same node, alternating runs:

main (#20306) this PR
c1 TPOT (ms) 2.033 ± 0.009 2.028 ± 0.011
c1 median ITL (ms) 2.008 2.008
c4 median ITL (ms) 2.945 2.949

Still no step-time impact. GSM8K is unchanged (89.462), and TLLM_DEVICE_COPY_CHECK=1 reports no violations with the same per-site merged/skipped counts as main.

Nice to have the spec sites named here! MiniMax-M3.1 uses the DSpark/DFlash drafter instead of Eagle3, so it would be great to add sites for dflash.py / dspark.py too, either here or as a follow-up. Happy to help map them.

Thanks! I looked into this, and no merged sites are needed for DFlash/DSpark in this PR:

  • MiniMax-M3.1's DSpark drafter runs through the DFlash worker. Its per-step uploads (batch_indices, batch_to_slot) already go through DeviceCopyBuffer, which skips unchanged uploads. With this push, DeviceCopyBuffer is the copy plan's owner-side record, so those uploads now have sites (CopySite.DFLASH_BATCH_INDICES / DFLASH_BATCH_TO_SLOT, next to the Eagle3 ones here). No plan merges them yet.
  • The MiniMax-M3 modeling_v2 targets accept only Eagle3 today, so M3 + DSpark falls back to the legacy model, which has no copy plan. Merging those sites only makes sense once M3.1 + DSpark runs on modeling_v2; I'd do that as a follow-up, and would be glad to take you up on helping map them then.
  • The remaining plain copies in dspark.py belong to the embedded DSpark path (DeepSeek-V4), not M3.1.

…d copy plan

Turn the MiniMax-M3 step-input pack and skip-unchanged cache into a runtime
mechanism any model can opt into:

* pyexecutor/device_copy.py: CopySite names each copy call site (with its
  direction), CopyPlan(defer=..., skip_unchanged=...) is declared by the
  model as `copy_plan`, and DeviceCopier applies it per engine: deferred
  copies are packed into one upload plus one trtllm::device_copy_scatter
  launch before the graph replay, unchanged copies are skipped. The skip
  shadows are DeviceCopyBuffer records keyed by device storage; a shadow
  is dropped before its copy is issued and recorded only after it, so a
  failed copy leaves no record. TLLM_DEVICE_COPY_CHECK=1 verifies the
  plan's assertions at runtime.
* The scatter kernel and op move out of minimaxM3/ as deviceCopyScatter.
* Shared call sites (attention, CUDA graph runner, decoder inputs) only
  name their site; MSA names its own with MsaCopySite. The speculative
  gather / previous-batch tables and the Eagle3 metadata uploads keep
  their model-independent unchanged-value skip and get no site.
* step_inputs.py, h2d_cache.py and their RuntimeHooks flags are removed;
  the host-staged MSA tables become MsaRuntimePolicy.stage_tables_on_host.
* Both MiniMax-M3 NVFP4 sm_103 targets declare the plan that reproduces
  the previous behavior.

…uting

Measured against main's step_inputs/h2d_cache path on MiniMax-M3 TP4 decode,
the generic copier spent about 4 us more host time per copy. Most of it was
bookkeeping the default path does not need:

* Site membership is tested by identity: an Enum member hashes through a
  Python-level __hash__.
* The pack computes byte ranges only against staged device copies and in
  check mode, and keeps the written-ranges list only in check mode (its
  only readers). Contiguous tensors take a direct byte-range path.
* The source direction is checked with Tensor.is_cuda instead of building
  a torch.device, and the skip cache looks up the destination storage once
  per copy.

A copy plan's deferred copies could only land at the graph replay, so a
destination with a device reader before the replay (MiniMax-M3's block
table, read by write_subpage_block_table on a sub-page pool) had to stay a
plain copy.

* CopyPlan.defer becomes CopyPlan.merge: a merged copy lands before the
  next barrier, and the graph replay flush stays the step's final barrier.
* CopyPlan.flush_after declares barrier sites. Every call through one
  (copy, fill_tail, inputs_unchanged, record_inputs) flushes the open pack
  right after it, also when the copy was skipped as unchanged. A plan with
  barriers but nothing merged is rejected. Call sites still only name
  themselves.
* The pack appends one segment ([header | descriptors | data], uploaded
  and scattered on its own) per barrier into the step's pinned and device
  staging buffers; the staging ring advances once per step, at begin, so
  barriers never wait on the host. A copy that no longer fits is issued
  eagerly after the staged segment, as before.
* Check mode is the module constant device_copy.CHECK_MODE, read once from
  TLLM_DEVICE_COPY_CHECK. device_copy.expect_landed(site, t) asserts at a
  reader, under `if device_copy.CHECK_MODE:`, that no merged copy into t is
  still staged, naming the anchor site; it raises when check mode is off.
* Both MiniMax-M3 NVFP4 sm_103 targets merge MsaCopySite.BLOCK_TABLE with
  a barrier after it, and the sub-page table writer asserts it landed.

…copies only

The copy plan now says only when merged copies land; whether a copy is
needed at all is decided by the code that owns the buffer.

* CopyPlan is (merge, flush_after) with flush_after a subset of merge. A
  flush_after site flushes the pack only when its own copy was staged, so
  its write lands before what runs next; a copy skipped as unchanged, run
  eagerly or not stageable adds no barrier. Steady MiniMax-M3 decode is
  back to one segment per step, two when the block table changes.
* The copier's skip cache, CopyPlan.skip_unchanged, skips(),
  inputs_unchanged() and record_inputs() are gone. copy() and fill_tail()
  take the owner's unchanged= assertion (refused during CUDA graph
  capture, verified in check mode) and copy() takes on_drop=, called when
  a merged copy is discarded with its pack so the owner's record is
  dropped. device_copy.UploadRecords packages the owner-side pattern
  around DeviceCopyBuffer.
* Owners skip as on main: RuntimeHooks.skip_unchanged_h2d turns it on for
  the TRTLLM and MSA attention metadata uploads (prompt lengths, MSA
  tables, the unused-slot fill), and MsaRuntimePolicy
  skip_unchanged_block_offsets for the KV cache manager's block-offset
  gather, which is main's code again; skips_unchanged_metadata_uploads
  again gives the engine private CUDA graph metadata buffers.
  MsaCopySite.BLOCK_OFFSETS is gone.

Signed-off-by: Fred Wei <20514172+WeiHaocheng@users.noreply.github.com>
RuntimeHooks held options that belong to a component and a field nothing
read. They move to where they belong.

* Skipping unchanged uploads is the attention metadata's own choice:
  TrtllmAttentionMetadata.skips_unchanged_uploads (False), set by the
  MiniMax-M3 MSA metadata, which also arms its KV cache manager's
  block-offset skip. The runner gives CUDA graph metadata private buffers
  when the metadata class skips. RuntimeHooks.skip_unchanged_h2d and
  skips_unchanged_metadata_uploads are gone.
* MsaRuntimePolicy, RuntimeHooks.msa and MsaKvUpdate are gone; what they
  selected is MSA's behaviour in every configuration: identity selections
  for short steps (now also read by MSA's own run_indexer on decode-only
  steps; the metadata class names the short/long decode graph split),
  prefix sums staged from the host, pool views built once, and the
  one-launch KV-length update, which moves from the MiniMax-M3 modeling_v2
  targets into the MSA backend (kernels/msa_kv_update.py) with its tests.
* RuntimeHooks.skip_greedy_rng_upload and SpecMetadata's copy of it are
  removed: nothing read them, and all-greedy one-model batches already
  skip the Philox uploads for every model.
* loop_on_execution_stream and merge_tuned_tactics_across_ranks stay model
  opt-ins.

Signed-off-by: Fred Wei <20514172+WeiHaocheng@users.noreply.github.com>
DeviceCopyBuffer and the copy plan's owner-side records were two
implementations of the same idea. DeviceCopyBuffer now lives in
pyexecutor/device_copy.py and is the one owner-side record:

* DeviceCopyBuffer(tensor, *, site, pin_memory=..., snapshot=True). update()
  issues through device_copy.copy(site, ...) with unchanged= when the record
  matches and on_drop=invalidate, and records only an issued copy (prefix
  matching, key=/exact=, and forget-during-capture are kept). The host
  values are snapshotted only when the copy runs eagerly; a merged copy is
  snapshotted by the pack. update(host, view=v) writes a view of the storage,
  keyed by its geometry. fill_tail(site, start, value) records a tail fill as
  (view, start, value). site=None makes a record-only buffer (the MSA KV
  cache manager's block-offset guard).
* device_copy.CHECK_MODE is the one check switch: TLLM_DEVICE_COPY_CHECK=1,
  or TLLM_DEBUG_MODE=1, which used to verify DeviceCopyBuffer's skipped
  copies. The unit-test conftest turns CHECK_MODE on instead of the old flag.
* UploadRecords is removed. A metadata class that skips unchanged uploads
  keeps one DeviceCopyBuffer per destination storage, with the upload's
  site, shared by its CUDA graph metadata copies.
* Every update() user names a site: Eagle3 batch indices and slot ids,
  DFlash batch indices and batch-to-slot map, the speculative sampler's slot
  table, the Mamba managers' state indices and dummy-request mask, the Mamba2
  metadata's state indices, and the decoder's speculative gather ids. No
  plan merges them, so they are still plain copies.
* tensorrt_llm/_device_copy.py is removed; its users import from
  tensorrt_llm._torch.pyexecutor.device_copy.

Merge Risk: Low · up to c2d42

This change moves per-step device copies into a model-declared copy plan. No concrete production failure is identified. Two test-coverage gaps remain: check-mode validation can silently not run in some tests, and the new short-decode identity path lacks a direct test. Both are worth addressing, but neither should block the merge.

Explanation

The title "[None][refactor] Route per-step device copies through a model-declared copy plan" follows the repository template with the [None] ticket and [refactor] type. It names the main change: per-step device copies now go through a model-declared copy plan, which the summary confirms with the new device_copy.py module, CopyPlan, DeviceCopier, and the removal of step_inputs.py and h2d_cache.py. The title is 10 words and 80 characters, which is concise and specific.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description covers the problem, the design, the removed components, the behavior changes, and a detailed test-coverage section with results. It follows the repository's Description and Test Coverage headings and includes the summary tag. The PR Checklist section is present but only has one box checked, and the description does not state the API-compatible or api-breaking label choice. These are minor gaps and do not make the description largely incomplete.

1666-1679: Trivial · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Add a unit test for the short decode-only identity branch in run_indexer.

The new branch returns the staged msa_short_table through view(num_kv_heads, num_tokens, topk). The slice length depends on num_tokens. If num_tokens does not match the token count used when the table was staged, the branch can return wrong block indices without raising an error. The unit tests in test_msa_backend.py do not reach this branch. The grep shows no test that sets _msa_short_ok = True or stages a non-None msa_short_table.

Add one case in tests/unittest/_torch/attention/sparse/msa/test_msa_backend.py with span.row_first == 0, _msa_short_ok = True, and a staged msa_short_table. Assert the returned [num_tokens, num_kv_heads, topk] indices. Assert that select_blocks is not called. A shape check on the staged table before the view would also catch a mismatch cheaply.

Also set the check environment variable, so that a lazy import of device_copy runs in check mode.

The fixture patches CHECK_MODE only when tensorrt_llm._torch.pyexecutor.device_copy is already in sys.modules. Assume that a test imports the module for the first time inside its body, for example through model or runner construction. The module then reads CHECK_MODE from the environment, which is normally False. Every DeviceCopier built in that test therefore runs without poisoning and without unchanged verification. The test passes, but check mode does not run.

The previous fixture patched the legacy module on every test. Set the environment variable as well, so that a later import also starts in check mode.

Review comment at @tests/unittest/conftest.py around lines 445 - 447:
Update the fixture that patches CHECK_MODE so it also sets the environment
variable read by device_copy to enable check mode, whether or not the module is
already imported; retain the module patch for an existing import. Use the
environment key defined by device_copy rather than guessing a literal, and
ensure the fixture-scoped setting is available to lazy imports and inherited by
spawned workers where applicable.

PR effort8 points — Attention review requires tracing upload ownership, flush-before-reader ordering, skipped-copy validity and graph-buffer lifetime across MSA and shared metadata. This merits 8 points for contract reasoning; mechanical scatter renames and call-site migrations contribute little independently.
ImportanceImportant — Copy-site declarations introduce ordering contracts for attention page tables, while metadata now owns unchanged-upload policy and the MSA cache manager enables pool-view reuse unconditionally. These changes affect device-buffer correctness and graph replay across shared execution paths.
