[None][feat] Let Whisper requests carry a precomputed log-mel spectrogram - #21045
WhisperInputProcessor accepts audio only: a file path or URL, an (array, sample_rate) tuple, or an {"array", "sampling_rate"} mapping, which it zero-pads to the 30 s window and ships as the waveform for the engine's GPU log-mel front-end (WhisperLogMelFrontend). A client that already has the log-mel spectrogram, because feature extraction runs elsewhere in its pipeline or is shared between models, has no way to send it, even though WhisperEncoder.forward already accepts a 3-D input and skips the front-end for it.
This PR lets a request carry the spectrogram instead. The audio item may be {"input_features": ...}: the array the checkpoint's WhisperFeatureExtractor returns for one window, as numpy or torch, with or without its leading batch axis of 1 (the extractor's own BatchFeature is accepted as the item; the check is on Mapping, since BatchFeature is a UserDict). It must be floating point and is checked against (config.num_mel_bins, extractor.nb_max_frames); other shapes, dtypes and item types are rejected with messages that name both forms. Each request picks its form by its item, so one instance serves audio and spectrogram requests in one batch; nothing is configured on the LLM.
The engine brings a batch to one shape instead of asking the user to:
WhisperForConditionalGeneration.normalize_encoder_features(features, upload) is called by the encoder-decoder runner before it packs a feature batch or fills the graph input. It uploads the waveform rows together through the runner's packed host-to-device path, runs the GPU log-mel front-end on them, and leaves spectrogram rows untouched, so every batch reaches the conv stem as one [batch, num_mel_bins, frames] tensor. Models without the hook are unaffected.
encoder_graph_spec therefore reports the spectrogram shape, and encoder CUDA graphs capture the conv stem and transformer with it as the fixed input; audio and spectrogram requests replay the same graphs, and the log-mel for an audio request runs just before the graph input is filled.
A spectrogram the client computed on the GPU stays there: the processor ships a detached, contiguous fp32 device-local copy and waits for that one copy (the engine reads it on its own encoder stream, which has no ordering with the client's), rather than a CPU round trip. With a worker process the tensor crosses as a CUDA IPC handle as any CUDA multimodal tensor does. With an in-process worker (TLLM_WORKER_USE_SINGLE_PROCESS=1, or return_logits) a CUDA IPC handle cannot be reopened in the exporting process, which failed for any CUDA multimodal tensor before; MultimodalParams.to_handle gains local=, under which CUDA tensors are left as they are (the request holds the tensor and the worker reads it directly; CPU tensors keep their shared-memory handles), and LLM passes it when its executor is a GenerationExecutorWorker. EncoderCUDAGraphRunner._replay_features copies device rows device-to-device into the static input buffer and stages host rows through the pinned mirror in merged spans; an all-host batch is the single H2D copy it was before. _pack_features accepts rows already on the device for the eager path and keeps one pinned staging buffer per row shape, so eager batches that alternate between the two forms do not reallocate it.
encoder_output_len, the decoder prompt and the max_tokens cap are the same as for a waveform request. trtllm-serve is unaffected: it has no request field for a spectrogram. The extractor truncates longer audio by default, so the docs tell clients to pass truncation=False (the extra frames are then rejected) or check the duration themselves. docs/source/models/encoder-decoder.md gains a paragraph and a snippet under "Transcribe audio with Whisper", and the encoder CUDA graph section describes the captured input.
Test Coverage
tests/unittest/_torch/modeling/test_modeling_whisper.py (over a bare config, no checkpoint):
test_input_processor_forwards_a_precomputed_log_mel: the extractor's output is accepted with or without its batch axis, as numpy (fp32, fp64, a negative-stride view) or torch (with autograd history), and reaches the encoder as a contiguous fp32 CPU copy [1, num_mel_bins, frames] that does not alias the input.
test_a_cuda_log_mel_stays_on_its_device (CUDA): a fp16 CUDA tensor with grad is shipped as a detached fp32 contiguous copy on the same device.
test_requests_choose_their_audio_form_per_item: one processor serves a tuple, an {"array"} mapping, an {"input_features"} mapping and a BatchFeature; an unsupported item's message names both forms.
test_encoder_graph_spec_is_the_spectrogram; test_normalize_encoder_features_converts_only_the_waveform_rows (a mixed batch: one upload of the waveform rows in order, rows equal to WhisperLogMelFrontend, the spectrogram row passed through by identity, an all-spectrogram batch untouched).
tests/unittest/_torch/executor/test_cuda_graph_runner.py: test_feature_replay_stages_host_rows_and_zero_fills_padding (host rows and the zero-filled padding rows reach the static buffer; replay, mirror rotation and events as before). tests/unittest/_torch/multimodal/test_share_multiparams.py: test_to_handle_local_keeps_cuda_tensors_for_an_in_process_consumer.
tests/integration/defs/llmapi/test_llm_api_pytorch_whisper.py: test_whisper_pytorch_precomputed_spectrogram[eager|encoder-graphs|eager-worker-process] (added to l0_l40s.yml): a numpy spectrogram, a CUDA spectrogram, and two mixed audio+spectrogram batches must reproduce the pinned fp32 token ids; under encoder CUDA graphs the replay counter must show the graphs were used; the third case runs the CUDA spectrogram through the default worker process (CUDA IPC handle) instead of the in-process worker.
GPU checks ran on one L4 with this change applied to the release:1.4.0rc1 image, openai/whisper-tiny, greedy, one 30 s music clip:
The three unit test files: 35 passed.
End to end on one instance, with a worker process and (for the CUDA spectrogram) also with an in-process worker: spectrogram requests (numpy with and without the batch axis, torch, CUDA torch) return exactly the token ids of the waveform request; a mixed batch of four (waveform, spectrogram, waveform, spectrogram) and a mixed batch with a CUDA spectrogram do too; wrong shape, integer dtype, an unsupported item and the spectrogram of a 60 s clip are refused with the messages above; the instance keeps serving both forms afterwards.
Encoder CUDA graphs could not be exercised on that image: with encoder_cuda_graph_config set, the worker dies during initialization on the stock image with a plain waveform instance as well. The new integration test is the first run of graphs with spectrogram requests.
Performance: spectrogram vs. waveform requests
Same L4, release:1.4.0rc1 image with this change, encoder eager (see above), one 30 s clip, greedy, max_tokens=96; each form after a warm-up: 5 rounds of one batch of N identical requests (throughput, encoder batched) and 10 single requests (latency), medians. Both forms produce the same token ids, so the decoder work is identical and the difference is the encoder input path: host staging plus the GPU log-mel for a waveform (1.92 MB per request) versus host staging of the spectrogram (0.96 MB per request).

A spectrogram request saves the log-mel pass, about 1.5 ms per single request on whisper-tiny, and is otherwise the same cost as a waveform request; on large-v2 the encoder and decoder dominate and the two forms are equal within run-to-run noise. The feature is for pipelines that already have the spectrogram, not a speed-up. The waveform path is unchanged apart from the log-mel running just before the graph input is filled instead of inside the captured graph, which the eager numbers above do not exercise.

Whisper requests can provide precomputed log-mel spectrograms or audio waveforms. The encoder converts waveform rows to spectrograms on the GPU and uses spectrogram-shaped inputs for eager and CUDA graph execution. Multimodal preprocessing can use process-local handles for CUDA tensors in worker executors.

Whisper feature input and encoding
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Accept and validate spectrogram inputs tensorrt_llm/_torch/models/modeling_whisper.py, tests/unittest/_torch/modeling/test_modeling_whisper.py, docs/source/models/encoder-decoder.md
The input processor accepts precomputed features as arrays or tensors, validates their dtype and configured dimensions, and retains waveform input handling. Tests cover input forms, validation, and the encoder graph input shape. The documentation describes the Python API input contract and its constraints.
The encoder runner calls the model’s optional feature-normalization hook. Whisper converts waveform rows while preserving spectrogram rows. CUDA graph replay copies device rows directly and stages host rows and padding. Unit and integration tests cover replay and mixed inputs in eager and graph modes. The documentation describes spectrogram-based graph inputs.
Worker-process tensor handles
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Create and select process-local CUDA handles tensorrt_llm/inputs/multimodal.py, tensorrt_llm/llmapi/llm.py, tests/unittest/_torch/multimodal/test_share_multiparams.py
MultimodalParams.to_handle accepts a local option for CUDA tensors. LLM preprocessing enables this option for GenerationExecutorWorker executors. Tests cover CPU handles and CUDA handle restoration when available.
Repeated rejected CUDA requests can retain GPU memory and eventually exhaust it. Fix handle cleanup before merging; the previously reported VisualGen startup risk no longer applies.

Cover the spectrogram forwarding and rejection in _build_model.
_TorchLLM._build_model forwards audio_input_form to create_input_processor when the value is not "waveform". It then raises ValueError when the created processor does not report the same form. No inspected test exercises either branch. The Whisper tests construct WhisperInputProcessor directly and never reach _build_model or LLM construction. If the forwarding is removed, the check rejects every spectrogram build, and the test suite does not detect it.
Add two cases to tests/unittest/llmapi/test_llm_utils.py. That file already patches create_input_processor on the LLM module and calls llm._build_model():
With audio_input_form="spectrogram", the patched factory receives audio_input_form="spectrogram".
With a processor that does not expose audio_input_form, _build_model() raises ValueError.

Add coverage for _TorchLLM._build_model using the existing
create_input_processor mock: verify that a spectrogram configuration forwards
audio_input_form="spectrogram" to the factory, and that a processor without an
audio_input_form raises ValueError.
Add a constructor test for the spectrogram rejection in OpenAIServer.__init__.
The new guard raises ValueError when generator.args.multimodal_config.audio_input_form is not "waveform". No test constructs OpenAIServer with a spectrogram-configured generator and asserts this error. The existing spectrogram tests call only WhisperInputProcessor and the encoder graph helper. A regression that removes or inverts the guard would not fail the suite.
Add a case beside the existing constructor guard test in tests/unittest/llmapi/test_runtime_control.py, near line 468. That test builds object.__new__(generator_cls) with args=SimpleNamespace(...) and checks a startup ValueError. The new case should:
Set args.multimodal_config to an object with audio_input_form="spectrogram". Assert OpenAIServer(...) raises ValueError matching audio_input_form='spectrogram'.
Keep the default case, with no multimodal_config or audio_input_form="waveform", constructing successfully.

WhisperInputProcessor validates spectrograms against the checkpoint extractor's nb_max_frames, not a fixed 3000-frame value. A supported checkpoint with a different extractor frame count can therefore reject the documented (num_mel_bins, 3000) input before it reaches the encoder.

This rejection runs after the LLM has already been built, so a spectrogram config fails only after model load and warmup. Could it be checked where serve resolves its LLM args, before the generator is constructed?
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Moved in 46b88c1: trtllm-serve now checks the setting where it resolves its LLM args, before the LLM is built, and at the top of launch_server (which the disaggregated entry point also uses), so a spectrogram config fails without loading the model. The OpenAIServer check stays as a backstop for a server built directly in Python; a new CPU test covers the early rejection.

video_pruning_rate is forwarded at all three create_input_processor call sites (llm.py, mm_encoder.py, model_engine.py), but audio_input_form only here. Is the engine-side processor intentionally left in waveform form? If so, a comment would help.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Forwarded at all three sites now (46b88c1). Rather than document the asymmetry, the three call sites build their kwargs through one helper, multimodal_input_processor_kwargs(multimodal_config) in llm_args.py, so the engine-side processor and the multimodal encoder get the same audio form and video pruning rate as the LLM. Only non-default values are forwarded, as before, since most input processors take neither argument.

Make the gRPC path test the spectrogram rejection that runs before dispatch.
The new tests call launch_server directly. The Click serve path reaches the same check at line 1514 before the gRPC branch, so the direct tests do not cover that route. A regression that removed or moved the call at line 1514 would leave the tests passing, and gRPC could start with an unsupported spectrogram setting.
The proposed remedy is a Click-level regression test. It needs to invoke serve with --grpc --set multimodal_config.audio_input_form=spectrogram and assert that the rejection happens before the gRPC launcher runs. The launcher is imported lazily inside the branch, so the test can patch it and check it was not called.

The serve rejection and the option it guarded are gone in d89bff3: the form is now per request and trtllm-serve is untouched, so there is nothing left for a Click-level test to cover.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The audio input format should be selected per request. We should not require users to choose waveform or spectrogram when constructing the LLM. A single instance should be able to accept either.
Please determine the format from the request payload and keep model-specific validation in the input processor. Any normalization or grouping needed for batching and CUDA graphs should be handled internally.
Validation can focus on Whisper in this PR. The interface should still be general enough for other audio models to use.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Agreed, and thanks for the direction. The next revision drops audio_input_form entirely: the input processor accepts either item per request (a waveform item or {"input_features": ...}) and ships whichever shape it got, the encoder runner asks the model to normalize a batch's features before packing them, and Whisper's normalizer runs its GPU log-mel front-end on the waveform entries so every batch reaches the conv stem as one uniform spectrogram tensor. Encoder CUDA graphs then capture the stem and transformer with the spectrogram as the fixed input, for both kinds of request, so mixed batches need no special casing. CUDA input_features will stay on the device as a detached device-local copy rather than the CPU round trip. The serve rejection, schema entries and manifest entry go away with the option. A graph-vs-eager test and the waveform/spectrogram comparison will come with that revision.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Done in d89bff3. MultimodalConfig.audio_input_form is gone, with its schema and manifest entries, the serve rejection and the input-processor kwargs helper. The input processor picks the form per item ({"input_features": ...} or any of the waveform items) and ships [1, n_samples] or [1, num_mel_bins, frames]. Normalization lives in the engine: the encoder-decoder runner calls the model's normalize_encoder_features(features, upload) before packing a feature batch or filling the graph input, and Whisper's implementation uploads the waveform rows together, runs the GPU log-mel front-end on them and leaves spectrogram rows untouched, so every batch reaches the conv stem as one spectrogram tensor; encoder_graph_spec reports that shape, so audio and spectrogram requests replay the same graphs. Models without the hook are unaffected. Validation stays in the input processor and the interface (a per-row feature list in, a uniform list out) is not Whisper-specific. The PR body describes the new shape of the change.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Please avoid the GPU-to-CPU-to-GPU round trip for CUDA inputs. This adds transfers and host synchronization to the precomputed-feature path.
CUDA features should stay on the GPU through input handling and encoder packing. CPU features can be uploaded when needed. Please preserve ownership, lifetime, and stream-ordering guarantees, using a device-local copy where necessary.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Done in d89bff3. A CUDA input_features is shipped as a detached, contiguous fp32 copy on its own device; the copy is ordered on the current stream, and the SharedTensorContainer handle that carries it to the worker includes torch's stream event, so the consumer waits on it without a host sync. EncoderCUDAGraphRunner._replay_features copies such rows device-to-device into the static input buffer, and host rows go through the pinned mirror in merged spans (an all-host batch is still the single H2D it was). _pack_features accepts device rows on the eager path. Rows the model normalized on the GPU take the same route. Covered by test_a_cuda_log_mel_stays_on_its_device, the host-span replay test, and the CUDA case of the new integration test.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
One more in ab8b2ac: with an in-process worker (TLLM_WORKER_USE_SINGLE_PROCESS=1, which the integration matrix uses, or return_logits) a CUDA tensor's IPC handle is reopened in the exporting process and fails with "invalid device context"; that was true for any CUDA multimodal tensor before, and keeping the spectrogram on the device made it reachable here. MultimodalParams.to_handle now takes local=, under which CUDA tensors use the shared-tensor module's existing process-local store while CPU tensors keep their shared-memory handles, and LLM passes it for a GenerationExecutorWorker. The processor also waits for its one device copy before the request leaves, since the engine reads it on its own encoder stream. A unit test covers the handle round trip and the integration test gained a worker-process case for the CUDA IPC path.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Follow-up in 47af188: the process-local store is no longer used. With an in-process worker, to_handle(local=True) now leaves a CUDA tensor as it is; the worker reads it from this process and the request object owns it, so nothing is stashed and nothing can be left behind when a request is rejected before it reaches the worker. CPU tensors keep their shared-memory handles as before.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Could we extend an existing GPU test to capture and replay encoder CUDA graphs with precomputed spectrograms, then compare the output with eager execution?
This test checks the graph specification, but does not execute a captured graph. Since the actual spectrogram graph path remains unverified, that would cover the remaining validation gap.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Added test_whisper_pytorch_precomputed_spectrogram[encoder-graphs] next to the existing matrix (and listed in l0_l40s.yml): a numpy spectrogram, a CUDA spectrogram and two mixed audio+spectrogram batches must reproduce the pinned fp32 token ids under encoder CUDA graphs, with the [eager] case as the reference, and _assert_cuda_graph_state requires the replay counter to exceed the warmup baseline so a silent eager fallback fails the test. It could not be run here: on the 1.4.0rc1 image the worker dies during initialization whenever encoder_cuda_graph_config is set, with a plain waveform instance as well, so CI will be its first run.
Added to the PR body under "Performance: spectrogram vs. waveform requests" (whisper-tiny at batch 16 and whisper-large-v2 at batch 8 on an L4, eager encoder, same token ids for both forms). A spectrogram request saves the log-mel pass, about 1.5 ms per single request on whisper-tiny and within noise on large-v2; throughput at batch size is equal for the two forms. The feature is for pipelines that already have the spectrogram rather than a speed-up.
_replay_features creates a second host upload span when a CUDA row separates two host rows. The current replay test is marked cpu_only and covers only contiguous host rows plus padding. The Whisper integration test uses batches of one or two requests, and the normalization test does not exercise replay.
Add a CUDA-gated replay test with distinct host, CUDA, and host rows. Assert all three rows reach the static feature buffer before graphs[key].replay(). This detects a regression that skips the second upload and leaves stale spectrogram data.

Propagate the CUDA producer wait to encoder_stream.
to_tensor("multimodal_data") reconstructs a transported CUDA tensor through SharedTensorContainer.get_local_view(). That CUDA event wait applies to the stream current during reconstruction. _run_encoder_step_unchecked later runs forward_encoder on the independent encoder_stream, but the non-TP submission path does not wait for the reconstruction stream.
For a spectrogram produced on another CUDA stream, _replay_features can therefore start static_features[...].copy_(f, non_blocking=True) before production completes. The graph may consume incomplete feature rows. Carry the producer-ready event with the request and wait on encoder_stream before the device-row copy.

There is no pending producer for a device row at that copy. A client's CUDA spectrogram has one producer, the processor's own copy in WhisperInputProcessor._load_mel, and the processor records an event after it and waits on it on the host before the request leaves, so the tensor the worker reconstructs is complete whatever stream reads it. Rows the model converts on the GPU (normalize_encoder_features) are produced inside forward_encoder, which _run_encoder_step_unchecked runs under encoder_stream, the same stream this device-to-device copy is enqueued on; the pinned staging used for the waveform upload waits on its own event (_pack_features). The copy is therefore stream-ordered after every producer, and carrying another event with the request would add a wait that is already satisfied.

Release the local CUDA handle when the request fails validation.
generate_async creates the local handle in _preprocess before _check_arguments runs. If validation rejects the request, the request never reaches the executor. The CUDA tensor then stays in _LocalTensorStore, which has no eviction or release path. Each rejected request keeps GPU memory alive until the process exits. A client that repeatedly sends a multimodal CUDA request that fails validation can exhaust GPU memory.
preprocess() has the same problem. It calls _preprocess and returns the handles without submitting them. If the caller discards the result, the tensor remains in the store.
Create the local handle only on the submission path, after _check_arguments passes. Alternatively, release stashed tokens when validation fails or when preprocessing output is discarded. Add a unit test that sends a CUDA multimodal request that fails _check_arguments, then asserts that _LocalTensorStore holds no new entries.

Fixed in 47af188 by not creating a handle at all: with local=True, to_handle now leaves a CUDA tensor in place. The in-process worker reads it from this process, to_tensor passes tensors through, and the request object keeps it alive, so a request that _check_arguments rejects, or a discarded preprocess() result, frees the tensor like any other object. The process-local store is no longer used by this PR and the single-use restriction goes with it. CPU tensors still become shared-memory handles as before. The unit test asserts the tensor is kept as is, and the single-process end-to-end check passed again with this version.

WhisperInputProcessor only took audio: a file, an (array, sample_rate)
tuple, or an {"array", "sampling_rate"} mapping, zero-padded and shipped
as the waveform for the engine's GPU log-mel front-end. A client that
already has the spectrogram (an ASR pipeline whose feature extraction
runs elsewhere, or that shares one extraction between models) had no
way to send it, although the encoder already accepts a 3-D input and
skips the front-end for it.
The audio item may now be {"input_features": ...}, the array the
checkpoint's WhisperFeatureExtractor returns for one window, with or
without its batch axis of 1. It is checked against (num_mel_bins,
frames) from the config and the extractor and shipped as fp32
[1, num_mel_bins, frames]; everything else about the request (decoder
prompt, max_tokens cap, encoder_output_len) is unchanged. Such a request
does not match the fixed waveform shape of an encoder CUDA graph, so its
batch runs eagerly, as the runner already handles. An encoder batch that
mixes feature shapes (a waveform and a spectrogram request) is rejected
with a clear message instead of failing inside torch.cat.

…ads the model
Review follow-ups on the Whisper precomputed log-mel input:
- trtllm-serve checks multimodal_config.audio_input_form where it resolves
its LLM args, before the LLM is built, so a spectrogram config fails
without loading the model. The OpenAIServer check stays for servers built
directly in Python.
- The LLM, its model engine and the multimodal encoder build their input
processor kwargs through one helper, so all three forward the audio form
and the video pruning rate the same way.
- LLM._build_model reads the audio form into a local once.

A request carries a waveform item or a precomputed log-mel spectrogram
({"input_features": ...}); nothing is fixed per LLM instance, so the
MultimodalConfig.audio_input_form option, its schema and manifest
entries, the trtllm-serve rejection and the input-processor kwarg
helper go away.
The encoder-decoder runner asks the model to normalize a batch's
feature rows before packing them or filling the graph input:
WhisperForConditionalGeneration.normalize_encoder_features uploads the
waveform rows together, runs the GPU log-mel front-end on them, and
leaves spectrogram rows untouched, so every batch reaches the conv
stem as one spectrogram tensor and encoder_graph_spec reports that
shape. Feature-mode graph replay copies rows that are already on the
device directly into the static buffer and stages host rows through
the pinned mirror as before. A CUDA spectrogram is shipped as a
detached device-local copy instead of a CPU round trip.
Tests: the Whisper unit tests cover per-request form selection, the
device-local copy, the graph contract and the normalizer; a graph
runner test covers host-row staging with padding; a new GPU
integration test runs spectrogram, CUDA-spectrogram and mixed batches
with the encoder eager and under encoder CUDA graphs.

…ess worker, and finish the device copy of a CUDA spectrogram
LLM._preprocess exported every multimodal tensor as a cross-process
shared-tensor handle. With an in-process executor worker
(TLLM_WORKER_USE_SINGLE_PROCESS=1, or return_logits) a CUDA tensor's
IPC handle is reopened in the exporting process, which fails with
"invalid device context". MultimodalParams.to_handle gains local=,
under which CUDA tensors go to the process-local store the
shared-tensor module already has for same-process handoff (to_tensor
now recognizes such a handle); CPU tensors keep their shared-memory
handles, which work in any process, so nothing changes for them. The
LLM passes local= when its executor is a GenerationExecutorWorker.
A process-local handle is consumed once by that process, which is
what an in-process worker does; before this change the same tensors
failed outright.
The Whisper input processor waits for its one device-to-device copy of
a CUDA spectrogram before the request leaves, since the engine reads
the copy on its own encoder stream, which has no ordering with the
client's.
The encoder-decoder runner keeps one pinned staging buffer per feature
row shape instead of one shared buffer, so eager batches that alternate
between waveform and spectrogram rows do not reallocate it behind a
sync on every switch.

…worker instead of using the process-local store
With local=True, MultimodalParams.to_handle keeps a CUDA tensor as it is:
the in-process worker reads it from this process and to_tensor passes it
through, so the request object owns the tensor and a request rejected by
_check_arguments, or a discarded preprocess() result, frees it like any
other object. The process-local store entry had no release path for those
cases and could be consumed only once.

Description
WhisperInputProcessoraccepts audio only: a file path or URL, an(array, sample_rate)tuple, or an{"array", "sampling_rate"}mapping, which it zero-pads to the 30 s window and ships as the waveform for the engine's GPU log-mel front-end (WhisperLogMelFrontend). A client that already has the log-mel spectrogram, because feature extraction runs elsewhere in its pipeline or is shared between models, has no way to send it, even thoughWhisperEncoder.forwardalready accepts a 3-D input and skips the front-end for it.This PR lets a request carry the spectrogram instead. The audio item may be
{"input_features": ...}: the array the checkpoint'sWhisperFeatureExtractorreturns for one window, as numpy or torch, with or without its leading batch axis of 1 (the extractor's ownBatchFeatureis accepted as the item; the check is onMapping, sinceBatchFeatureis aUserDict). It must be floating point and is checked against(config.num_mel_bins, extractor.nb_max_frames); other shapes, dtypes and item types are rejected with messages that name both forms. Each request picks its form by its item, so one instance serves audio and spectrogram requests in one batch; nothing is configured on the LLM.The engine brings a batch to one shape instead of asking the user to:
WhisperForConditionalGeneration.normalize_encoder_features(features, upload)is called by the encoder-decoder runner before it packs a feature batch or fills the graph input. It uploads the waveform rows together through the runner's packed host-to-device path, runs the GPU log-mel front-end on them, and leaves spectrogram rows untouched, so every batch reaches the conv stem as one[batch, num_mel_bins, frames]tensor. Models without the hook are unaffected.encoder_graph_spectherefore reports the spectrogram shape, and encoder CUDA graphs capture the conv stem and transformer with it as the fixed input; audio and spectrogram requests replay the same graphs, and the log-mel for an audio request runs just before the graph input is filled.TLLM_WORKER_USE_SINGLE_PROCESS=1, orreturn_logits) a CUDA IPC handle cannot be reopened in the exporting process, which failed for any CUDA multimodal tensor before;MultimodalParams.to_handlegainslocal=, under which CUDA tensors are left as they are (the request holds the tensor and the worker reads it directly; CPU tensors keep their shared-memory handles), andLLMpasses it when its executor is aGenerationExecutorWorker.EncoderCUDAGraphRunner._replay_featurescopies device rows device-to-device into the static input buffer and stages host rows through the pinned mirror in merged spans; an all-host batch is the single H2D copy it was before._pack_featuresaccepts rows already on the device for the eager path and keeps one pinned staging buffer per row shape, so eager batches that alternate between the two forms do not reallocate it.encoder_output_len, the decoder prompt and themax_tokenscap are the same as for a waveform request.trtllm-serveis unaffected: it has no request field for a spectrogram. The extractor truncates longer audio by default, so the docs tell clients to passtruncation=False(the extra frames are then rejected) or check the duration themselves.docs/source/models/encoder-decoder.mdgains a paragraph and a snippet under "Transcribe audio with Whisper", and the encoder CUDA graph section describes the captured input.Test Coverage

Same L4,
release:1.4.0rc1image with this change, encoder eager (see above), one 30 s clip, greedy,max_tokens=96; each form after a warm-up: 5 rounds of one batch of N identical requests (throughput, encoder batched) and 10 single requests (latency), medians. Both forms produce the same token ids, so the decoder work is identical and the difference is the encoder input path: host staging plus the GPU log-mel for a waveform (1.92 MB per request) versus host staging of the spectrogram (0.96 MB per request).A spectrogram request saves the log-mel pass, about 1.5 ms per single request on whisper-tiny, and is otherwise the same cost as a waveform request; on large-v2 the encoder and decoder dominate and the two forms are equal within run-to-run noise. The feature is for pipelines that already have the spectrogram, not a speed-up. The waveform path is unchanged apart from the log-mel running just before the graph input is filled instead of inside the captured graph, which the eager numbers above do not exercise.
