[TRTLLM-17125][feat] Preempt requests on KV pressure under aggregated Helix - #21122
Adds KV-pressure handling for aggregated Helix: when prefill or decode can't get enough KV pages, the scheduler recompute-pauses (preempts) a request identically on every CP rank and re-runs its prefill later. Each rank schedules independently, so every decision reads only rank-invariant inputs. Disaggregated Helix and non-Helix behavior are unchanged.
Scheduler: aggregated Helix skips suspend (it frees nothing in a single hot GPU pool) and preempts directly. On the context path it only preempts requests behind the requester, which stops two requests from preempting each other in a loop.
Re-prefill: reset_for_recompute now resets the Helix decode counter and inactive-rank flag, so the owner rank and per-rank lengths are correct after re-prefill.
Guards: aggregated Helix rejects host/disk tiers and KV connectors and skips the auto host tier; KV pool rebalance is rejected under Helix.
Debug: TLLM_HELIX_AGG_CHECK_SCHEDULE=1 (set on every rank) compares each rank's schedule every iteration and raises on a mismatch.
Scope: this PR keeps aggregated Helix GPU-only, so preemption is the only way to free pages. Suspending to a host tier is tracked in TRTLLM-17302 and may lift the host-tier rejection and the suspend skip added here.
Test Coverage
test_helix_agg_preemption.py (new, GPU): a real manager and scheduler per simulated CP rank, under decode, chunked-prefill and staggered-arrival pressure. Checks identical decisions on every rank, correct replay and owner/position on every decode, bounded preemptions, and that every request finishes.
test_kv_cache_manager_v2_helix_superblock.py: the scheduler ladder, the guards, the counter reset, and the schedule check.
test_cache_transceiver_single_process.py: the Helix generation managers pass is_disagg=True, so they keep the disaggregated path.

Dev Engineer Review
Aggregated Helix now uses recompute-pause when KV allocation fails. The scheduler skips ordinary eviction and suspend paths, and it limits context-preemption victims to requests behind the requester. Re-prefill resets the Helix decode state.
Aggregated Helix rejects lower cache tiers, KV connectors, and KV-pool rebalance. It disables host-tier provisioning and synchronizes KV-cache-manager initialization status across ranks. The opt-in schedule check is limited to supported configurations. No current review findings or test execution results were supplied.
QA Engineer Review
Four test-code files changed: aggregated Helix preemption, Helix KV-cache-manager behavior, KV-cache-manager integration, and the single-process disaggregated transceiver test. The A10 pre-merge CI list adds the aggregated Helix preemption test. The H100 CI list includes Helix transceiver tests and related attention-DP checks. The B200 CI list includes the Helix retention test from the changed KV-cache-manager integration file. No manual-QA list entries were found for these tests.
Coverage includes decode and chunked-prefill pressure, staggered arrivals, rank agreement, configuration guards, allocation failure paths, schedule divergence, recompute-state reset, initialization failure synchronization, and disaggregated behavior. CI registration is confirmed for some tests, but not for every new or changed test. Coverage verdict: needs follow-up; test execution results are unavailable.

… Helix
When prefill or decode runs out of KV pages under aggregated Helix,
recompute-pause a request identically on every CP rank and re-run its
prefill later, instead of raising.
- Scheduler: aggregated Helix goes straight to recompute-pause, since
suspending frees nothing in its single hot GPU pool, and the context
path only preempts requests behind the requester. Disaggregated Helix
still raises.
- Request: the Helix decode counter and inactive-rank flag are reset with
the rest of the execution state, so a re-prefilled request decodes from
its new prompt end.
- KV cache manager: aggregated Helix rejects host/disk tiers and KV
connectors and skips the automatic host tier; KV pool rebalance is
rejected under Helix.
- Executor: TLLM_HELIX_AGG_CHECK_SCHEDULE=1 compares every CP rank's
schedule each iteration and raises on a mismatch.
- Tests: an end-to-end test with a real manager and scheduler per
simulated CP rank under decode and chunked-prefill pressure, plus unit
tests for the guards, the scheduler ladder, the counter reset and the
schedule check.

- Scheduler: under Helix, a generation request that sits out a step
without being suspended now has its batch index cleared, so the
overlap scheduler does not read a stale slot on its next step.
- Scheduler: the context path passes the requester's index to
_try_preempt_for_pages instead of scanning requests_list for it.
- Scheduler: the allocation-failure error under Helix describes the
disabled recompute pause rather than assuming a disaggregated server.
- KV cache manager: log when aggregated Helix disables the host tier.
- Executor: warn when TLLM_HELIX_AGG_CHECK_SCHEDULE=1 is set but the
schedule check does not apply.

Summary
KV-cache constraints and quotas tensorrt_llm/_torch/pyexecutor/kv_cache/kv_cache_manager_v2.py, tests/unittest/_torch/executor/kv_cache/test_kv_cache_manager_v2_helix_superblock.py, tests/unittest/disaggregated/test_cache_transceiver_single_process.py, tests/unittest/_torch/executor/kv_cache/test_kvcm2_integration.py
Helix rejects KV-pool rebalance. Non-disaggregated Helix also rejects host or disk cache tiers and KV connectors, skips host-tier provisioning, and synchronizes initialization status. Tests cover these restrictions and initialization synchronization.
The scheduler tracks each context request’s position and, on CP Helix, considers only later requests as page-preemption victims. Simulated-rank tests exercise decode pressure, context pressure, and staggered arrivals; the test is added to the A10 test list.
Generation allocation and recompute pause tensorrt_llm/_torch/pyexecutor/scheduler/scheduler_v2.py, tensorrt_llm/_torch/pyexecutor/llm_request.py, tests/unittest/_torch/executor/kv_cache/test_kv_cache_manager_v2_helix_superblock.py
On CP Helix, generation allocation failures use recompute-pause handling when enabled; unscheduled requests have their runtime state cleared. Execution-state initialization resets the Helix decode fields. Tests cover allocation outcomes and recompute reset.
An opt-in check compares scheduling summaries across CP ranks and raises RuntimeError for differences or context requests without the full prompt. Tests cover matching summaries and divergent paused victims, decode steps, and prompts.
The reviewed scheduling, initialization, replay, and rank-consistency paths have no remaining actionable merge risk.

Sync KV cache manager init status across CP ranks on the GPU-only aggregated Helix path so a failed allocation aborts every rank instead of hanging peers. Require pp_size == 1 for the opt-in schedule check, since the PP loop never calls it. Register the Helix preemption test in l0_a10 and mark the new init-sync test cpu_only.

Approving — the comments below are optional touch-ups, not blockers.
The rank-invariance argument checks out against the manager: the GPU quota is allreduce(MIN)-synced in token units at construction and the superblock ledger makes every rank spend the same page count per request, so independent per-rank schedulers reach the same verdict. The new GPU test driving two real managers and schedulers is the right level of test for this.
Two things the description and docs do not cover:
User-visible scheduling semantics. Under aggregated helix a context request that is the newest in the active list has an empty victim range, so a fresh arrival never preempts anything and waits for completions. Non-helix MAX_UTILIZATION on a GPU-only pool behaves differently. docs/source/features/helix.md says nothing about KV pressure handling, the new rejections (host/disk tier, KV connector, KV pool rebalance), the skipped auto host tier, or TLLM_HELIX_AGG_CHECK_SCHEDULE. A short "KV memory pressure" section there would save the next person from reading the scheduler to learn why their host_cache_size is rejected.
Description omissions. The init-status sync extension and the _detect_deadlock remedy text change are in the diff but not in the description.
One design question is inline on the requester-index bound: the thrash it prevents does not look helix-specific, so either apply it to every GPU-only pool or record why non-helix is exempt.
Automatically added "ci: full pre-merge approved" because this PR has satisfied the required GitHub review approvals. Unresolved review conversations and other required checks remain independent merge requirements.
- Scheduler: under aggregated Helix, log at debug level when a generation
request finds no pages and no victim and sits out the step.
- Test: when a request is preempted again, forget its earlier re-prefill
so the replayed prompt is checked on every re-prefill, not just the
first, and the request must decode after its latest one.
