[None][perf] Avoid output concatenation in eager GDN - #21132
Qwen3NextGatedDeltaNet.forward allocates attn_out before selecting the custom-op or direct forward_core path. Both paths receive the preallocated buffer, which avoids concatenating separate eager outputs. No review findings or test-run results were supplied.
QA Engineer Review
The modified unittest adds a CUDA test for float16 and bfloat16 inputs across two token/head shapes. It checks that forward_core receives an output buffer with the expected shape, dtype, and device. Coverage verdict: needs follow-up. The test mocks core execution, so it does not verify output values or prefill/decode writes; its inclusion in an integration test list is not established.
Per-File QA Perspective
tensorrt_llm/_torch/modules/mamba/gdn_mixer.py: Verify output correctness and slice placement for the custom-op and forward_core paths, including eager prefill/decode.
tests/unittest/_torch/modules/mamba/test_gdn_kernel_optimizations.py: The added CUDA test checks the output-buffer contract with mocked core and postprocessing methods. It does not validate computed outputs.
Description
Why?
Eager mixed batches can concatenate separate prefill and decode outputs despite existing kernel support for shared output storage.
What?
Use a shared output buffer in eager execution so prefill and decode write directly into their final slices, avoiding the extra copy.

These rows use FlashInfer prefill with 4,096 prefill tokens + 32 one-token decode
requests. Across all three tested shapes and both FlashInfer/Triton backends,
the captured eager core span fell 2.2–4.1%, while ordinary eager CUDA-event
elapsed time fell 0.6–1.5%. Each comparison used 100 alternating samples per
variant.
Notes:
the denominator is the baseline GDN core median: convolution, gate/QK preparation, and recurrence.
Graph capture isolates the eager core's GPU span; ordinary eager timing includes Python submission gaps.
Timings use deterministic ordinary decode; MTP was checked separately for correctness.
Development validation passed 100 checks on B200, including bitwise output/state comparisons and CUDA graph replay.

Qwen3NextGatedDeltaNet.forward now allocates the attention-output buffer before choosing an execution path. The direct forward_core call receives that buffer through output. A CUDA test checks the buffer’s shape, dtype, and device.

forward allocates attn_out before path selection and passes it to forward_core on the direct path. A CUDA test checks the buffer’s shape, dtype, and device. The test uses module-level imports for Qwen3NextGatedDeltaNet.
The shared-buffer behavior has focused test coverage. Strengthening the postprocessing handoff assertion is worthwhile, but the remaining gap is bounded and does not by itself block merging.

Cover the Qwen3NextGatedDeltaNet.forward wrapper with a shared output buffer.
The mixed prefill and decode path that writes into a shared output buffer is already tested at the forward_extend level. The changed wrapper is not. Its new_empty allocation and its output=attn_out pass-through into forward_core run in no test, so a regression there would not fail any test.
Add a parametrized case in tests/unittest/_torch/modules/mamba/test_gdn_mixed_decode.py. It should call forward_core(..., output=attn_out) with a mixed batch (num_contexts > 0 and num_decode_tokens > 0). Compare the result against a reference run with output=None, using cloned inputs and recurrent state. The test should check output values, the returned buffer, and recurrent state. The attention metadata and mamba layer cache can be stubbed, as the existing forward_extend test already does for its inputs.

Make the core mock return its output so the test checks the handoff to postprocessing.
forward passes the core return value to _postprocess_gdn_output. Both mocks in test_gdn_eager_forward_supplies_output_buffer are unconstrained, so the test passes even if the wrapper sends a different tensor to postprocessing. The current assertions check only the buffer passed to forward_core. Make the core mock return that buffer, then assert that postprocessing receives the same object.
