This is a continuation and replacement for #7368 after rebasing on the current master branch. After #7333 was merged there were significant merge conflicts where both PRs changed the same functions. The current PR has been tested locally to not regress the fixes of #7333.
Making the changes a single commit was done to ease rebasing.
