RC522 RFID Reader Support

This PR adds MFRC522/RC522 SPI RFID reader support as an alternative to the existing PN532 NFC reader.

Changes

  • Added ENABLE_RC522 RFID backend
  • Added openevse_wifi_v1_rc522 PlatformIO environment
  • Added RC522 SPI driver implementation
  • Added RC522 build and user documentation
  • Added MFRC522 clone version 0x88 support
  • Improved reader timeout handling and false failure detection
  • Fixed RC522 reset pin conflict with MCP9808 I2C (GPIO22 → GPIO4)

Validation

  • Built successfully:
  • python -m platformio run -e openevse_wifi_v1_rc522

Build result:

SUCCESS

Hardware

Default RC522 wiring:

  • SS: GPIO5
  • RST: GPIO4
  • SCK: GPIO18
  • MOSI: GPIO23
  • MISO: GPIO19

PN532 support remains unchanged.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added support for MFRC522/RC522 RFID readers over SPI alongside PN532 readers over I2C.
    • Added an OpenEVSE Wi-Fi v1 build option for RC522 readers, with configurable SPI pins and documented wiring defaults.
    • RC522 reader availability and failure information is included in RFID status.
    • RC522 readers detect cards and report each card’s UID without repeating it while the card remains in range.
    • Reader initialization retries after a failure, and connection loss is detected after repeated invalid checks.

🟡 Changes recommended

RC522_RST_PIN still defaults to GPIO22 in the new header, which can reintroduce the MCP9808/I2C-SCL pin conflict when ENABLE_RC522 is used without explicit pin flags.

Pull request overview

Adds an MFRC522/RC522 SPI-based RFID reader backend as an alternative to the existing PN532 I2C reader, including a dedicated PlatformIO build environment and documentation updates so the firmware can be built and deployed for RC522-equipped hardware.

Changes:

  • Introduces RC522Reader (MFRC522 library) implementation and integrates it into the firmware startup and status reporting.
  • Adds a new PlatformIO environment openevse_wifi_v1_rc522 and includes it in CI builds.
  • Updates user/developer documentation to describe the RC522 option and build command.

This seems to duplicate the code in initialise, should this just call initialise then do the check?

Seems like this should be at the top of the loop or probably in begin or setup

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The firmware adds an RC522 SPI reader option alongside PN532 support. A new PlatformIO environment configures the reader, firmware setup initializes it, and the reader polls for cards and reports UIDs. RFID status fields now include RC522 builds. Developer and user documentation describe the reader option.

Merge Risk

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 4ab21

The RC522 reader support looks ready to merge. Earlier review concerns appear to be addressed, and PN532 behavior is described as unchanged.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to b9052

The new reader preserves the existing authorization path, and its status fields do not add a new web authorization bypass. However, reader faults can remain hidden from health reporting and recovery, while synchronous reader operations can delay other firmware work. These risks are limited to devices running the RC522-enabled firmware; exact hardware effects remain unverified.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: The new reader refreshes its health timestamp for either card-presence result, before validating a UID read. Repeated communication failures represented as “no card” can therefore keep cached presence healthy and prevent timeout-driven recovery. An initialized probe also returns cached presence. This can conceal an access-control reader outage; it does not itself authenticate a tag or release the RFID gate.
  • Medium · reliability · inferred: Reader initialization and card transactions execute synchronously inside the shared cooperative scheduler. Failed initialization retries after only a 50 ms scheduling delay, in addition to the call's own execution time. Dependency inspections identify reset and transaction waits, so missing hardware or difficult card responses can delay network polling and RFID expiration or disconnect cleanup on the same device. The total delay and any exploitable denial-of-service threshold remain unverified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The supported exposure is an individual RC522-enabled charger. Physical card input reaches the existing authorization consumer, while reader latency can affect other work in that firmware process. The evidence does not establish propagation to other chargers, additional service authority or new tenant-wide exposure.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A reader fault or adverse card-response sequence can exercise the health and shared-execution weaknesses described above. No unauthorized charging path is demonstrated: reader failure does not create authentication, and an unauthenticated required-RFID state still claims Disabled. Hardware-specific fault behavior and an attacker-achievable delay remain unresolved.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The reader supplies an identity string rather than directly granting charging authority. Local authorization requires a stored UID match, with an existing OCPP delegation alternative. The changed web fields expose reader health and presence through the existing status boundary, not those identity strings.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Partial UID-read failures halt the card and stop crypto without an authorization callback. Disable clears initialization and contact state, and reactivation attempts initialization before polling. Authentication expiration and vehicle-disconnect cleanup remain in RfidTask rather than the hardware reader.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Separate reader-health validation from card absence, and give retries and card transactions an explicit execution budget or isolation strategy. Define the intended missing-reader policy for scheduled RFID independently of backend selection.
