Installer Tools

Settings → System → Installer Tools (directly below Developer Tools) holds the commissioning controls an installer sets once and an owner should not casually change. The page is locked behind an installer password.

Why a password

NEC 625.42 (2023) lets an EVSE with adjustable current be sized to its set current rather than its nameplate, but only if access to the adjusting means is restricted — a tool-only cover, a lock, or password-protected commissioning software available only to qualified personnel. The installer password is the third option. Confirm the wording against the NEC edition adopted where the charger is installed.

What is on the page

Section Notes
Hardware maximum current Sends $SC xx M through OpenEVSE_Lib (setCurrentCapacityFactoryLimit). One-time only.
Safety checks Moved here from Settings → Safety. The GFCI self-test toggle carries the note "Disable if the circuit is protected by a GFCI."
Installer password Change the password that unlocks the page.

Hardware maximum current

The controller accepts $SC xx M only while its EEPROM byte (EOFS_MAX_HW_CURRENT_CAPACITY) has never been written; any later attempt returns $NK, and nothing in RAPI can erase it. The page says so, and tells the installer to set the lower of the station maximum and the circuit maximum. The circuit maximum is the branch-circuit breaker rating × 80%, because an EV charging load is a continuous load (NEC 210.19(A)(1), 210.20(A), 625.42).

The charger can only report that the command was sent. The page waits two seconds, re-reads /config, and compares max_current_hard with the request, so a refused write (already set once) is reported as unchanged rather than as success. The range accepted is 6–80 A, the controller's own limits.

GFCI self-test advisory removed

The GFCI self-test is legitimately off wherever the circuit is itself GFCI protected, so safety.gfci_check is no longer raised as an advisory (firmware rule, label and GUI copy removed). The gfci_check setting and its toggle are unchanged. The other five safety-check advisories now link to Installer Tools instead of Safety.

Password handling

  • Default: installer (INSTALLER_PASSWORD_DEFAULT), used by a fresh or factory-reset unit.
  • Stored on the charger as the secret option installer_password (short name ipw), alongside www_password, in plain text.
  • Never sent to the browser, not even masked: config_strip_internal() removes it from every /config read and write, every path that goes through config_deserialize() (HTTP, MQTT, the serial config command). The GUI therefore cannot verify it locally and asks the charger.
  • 4–32 printable ASCII characters.
  • The GUI keeps the verified password in memory only; leaving the page locks it again and a reload forgets it.

Endpoints

All are POST, JSON body, require the normal login and the X-Requested-With: OpenEVSE header (as the crash-report identity endpoints do).

Endpoint Body Replies
/installer/verify {"password"} 200 ok, 403 wrong password, 429 locked
/installer/password {"current","new"} 200 changed, 400 invalid password, 403, 429
/installer/maxcurrent {"password","amps"} 200 sent (+requested, previous), 400 amps out of range, 403, 429

Five wrong passwords lock all three endpoints for 30 seconds (429 with retry_after seconds). The counter is shared and held in RAM, so a reboot clears it.

Limits to be aware of

This is a commissioning gate, not strong authentication.

  • The password is stored in plain text, like www_password.
  • POST /config still accepts max_current_hard from any logged-in client, as do the legacy UI, MQTT and RAPI. The controller's write-once rule is what actually protects the hardware limit; the password protects the GUI path. Closing the /config path would break those other clients, so it was left alone.
  • The charger cannot tell "never set" from "set to 80 A" (80 is the controller default), so the page cannot disable itself once the limit is locked; it reports the outcome after a write attempt.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added password-protected Installer Tools for commissioning, with safety-check controls and a one-time hardware maximum-current setting.
    • Installers can change the stored password. Verification locks for 30 seconds after five consecutive failed attempts.
  • Updates
    • Safety-check controls are now in Installer Tools rather than the Safety settings page.
    • The GFCI self-test advisory is no longer displayed; GFCI trip notifications remain.

…drop GFCI advisory

Backend for the GUI's Installer Tools page (gui-nightshift install_tools):

- installer_password config option (default "installer"), never
serialised or accepted through the public config paths.
- POST /installer/verify, /installer/password and /installer/maxcurrent:
  login + GUI-only header, shared 5-failure/30 s throttle. maxcurrent
  goes through EvseManager::setMaxHardwareCurrent, i.e. OpenEVSE_Lib
setCurrentCapacityFactoryLimit ($SC xx M); the controller accepts it once.
- Stop raising the safety.gfci_check advisory: the self-test is
legitimately off on a GFCI-protected circuit.
- Bump gui-nightshift pointer and regenerate src/web_static.
- docs/installer_tools.md.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 4ebfa

Installer Tools adds password-gated hardware-current and password endpoints without widening access beyond existing configuration paths. Three small follow-ups remain: one edge case can leave the installer lockout reporting 429 after long inactivity, and two documentation passes need correcting. The change is otherwise mergeable.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 91efe

The installer password protects selected endpoints and the page, not every configuration path. Those alternate paths already existed, but removing the disabled GFCI-self-test advisory reduces visibility of safety-setting changes even where upstream GFCI protection is absent. Existing login checks and controller protections limit the exposure.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The PR removes the critical disabled-GFCI-self-test advisory for every installation, not only circuits with upstream GFCI protection. An ordinary-authorized client can still disable that setting through the existing configuration path, but the former advisory no longer exposes the change. This weakens detection of safety-control tampering or misconfiguration on circuits without the documented compensating protection. The retained GFCI-trip notification reports a different condition and does not replace the disabled-setting warning; actual unsafe installations are not established by the available evidence.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated attackable scope is an individual reachable charger's commissioning and safety state. Existing ordinary authentication requires Basic credentials or a valid browser session when enabled, but accepts requests in AP-only mode or with a blank web password. No fleet-wide authority or cross-device propagation of the installer credential was established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A client satisfying the existing configuration authorization can submit gfci_check=false without the installer password. That authority predates the PR; the changed exposure is loss of the former disabled-setting notification. Where upstream protection is absent, this makes tampering or misconfiguration less visible. Continued fault-trip reporting and unchanged controller checks limit, but do not eliminate, this detection concern.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Installer verification is charger-side and separate from ordinary web identity. All three installer handlers share a RAM-only five-failure, 30-second lockout. Generic configuration still permits hardware-current and safety-setting writes, deliberately preserving existing clients; therefore the new password does not establish installer-only authority at the shared setting owner.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The hardware setter leaves cached state unchanged on non-OK responses, and successful boot-time capacity reads refresh it from the controller. The endpoint distinguishes dispatch from application, but neither its response nor the GUI's cached-value comparison establishes recovery from an accepted write with a lost acknowledgement. Password-change success likewise checks in-memory equality after commit rather than a checked durability result; these remain evidence gaps, not verified failure scenarios.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Preserve visibility of disabled GFCI self-test while allowing explicitly commissioned exceptions for upstream protection, rather than suppressing the advisory for every installation.
  • proposed — If installer-only authority is a required safety guarantee, enforce it at shared commissioning writers and define reset/recovery authority, with an explicit compatibility transition for existing clients. The current UI gate should not be relied upon as that system-wide guarantee.

The controller accepts `$SC xx M` only while its EEPROM byte (`EOFS_MAX_HW_CURRENT_CAPACITY`) has never been written; any later attempt returns `$NK`, and nothing in RAPI can erase it. The page says so, and tells the installer to set the lower of the station maximum and the circuit maximum. The circuit maximum is the branch-circuit breaker rating × 80%, because an EV charging load is a continuous load (NEC 210.19(A)(1), 210.20(A), 625.42).

The charger can only report that the command was *sent*. The page waits two seconds, re-reads `/config`, and compares `max_current_hard` with the request, so a refused write (already set once) is reported as unchanged rather than as success. The range accepted is 6–80 A, the controller's own limits.

Treat equal-value results as indeterminate.

When a repeat request equals the stored value, the controller rejects the write, but /config still matches the request. The comparison cannot distinguish rejection from acceptance.

Declare installer_password in app_config.h.

installer_password is a ConfigOptSecret, so it must follow the three-place declaration rule. Its private status and exclusion from public config paths do not exempt it.

Use a non-wrapping monotonic clock for the installer lockout.

If a lockout goes unchecked for about 24.9 days after its deadline, the signed difference can become positive again. A valid POST to /installer/verify, /installer/password, or /installer/maxcurrent can then receive HTTP 429 with a retry time of about 24.7 days. The false lockout can persist until the deadline-relative millis() difference wraps again, about 49.7 days after the deadline, or the device restarts. Use a 64-bit monotonic clock to set and check the deadline, or clear expired state in a periodic path that runs independently of installer requests. Widening the stored deadline while continuing to use millis() does not fix the wrap.

Update the installer lockout deadline and its expiry check around
installer_locked_until to use a non-wrapping 64-bit monotonic clock; widening
the stored deadline while still using millis() is insufficient. Ensure the same
clock is used when setting and checking the deadline so expired lockouts cannot
become active again.

EvseMonitor::setMaxHardwareCurrent clamps to [min current, current
hardware maximum] rather than refusing, and $SC xx M is write-once. A
request above the current maximum therefore spent the one-time write on
the old value, and the GUI then reported it as already set. Refuse
anything outside that range with 400 (+min, max) instead; in practice
the limit can only come down.

Checked against the emulator: 90 and 81 refused (max 80), 50 sent and
taken, after which max reads 50.

Moves gui-nightshift to the matching Installer page fix.

I pushed d2d5c13. EvseMonitor::setMaxHardwareCurrent doesn't refuse an out-of-range value; it clamps it to [min current, current hardware max]. Because $SC xx M is write-once, a request above the current maximum used up the one-time write on the old value, and the GUI then reported it as "already set".

/installer/maxcurrent now refuses anything outside that range with 400 {"msg":"amps out of range","min":…,"max":…}. In practice the limit can only come down. I updated the docs to match and moved gui-nightshift to the matching Installer page fix (OpenEVSE/openevse-gui-nightshift#164, 5eef3f9). CI will regenerate the bundled GUI files.

Checked against the emulator: 90 and 81 A are refused (max 80); 50 A is sent and taken; after that the max reads 50 and the next 400 reports max: 50.

The GUI side of Installer Tools (gui-nightshift#164) is merged and ships
in the next GUI release, via the usual pointer-bump PR. This PR pinned
5eef3f9, a commit on the GUI's install_tools branch that never reached
the GUI main branch (#164 was squashed), so the pin would break once
that branch is deleted. Firmware-only now; the current GUI simply does
not call the new /installer endpoints.

Master merged the installer tools (#1334) and added the route to the
feature map, but the embedded gui-nightshift build has no installer page
yet, so no scenario can pass. Record it under 'Waiting for the UI', as for
/settings/shellylnm.
