Targets develop. The docs name APIs that #42974 adds (Stack, PopoverSurface, Icon color, FieldRow justify).

What

  • docs/frontend/layout.md, new: screens compose named layout containers. Box is for building containers, not screens, and Fuselage components take no styling props.

    • A table of the existing containers by intent.
    • Recipes for forms, filter bars, actions and modals.
    • Where a new container lives and when it moves up: next to the screen, then apps/meteor/client/components, then ui-client, then Fuselage.
  • docs/frontend/building-components.md, rewritten:

    • the props a component accepts: DOM/ARIA attributes plus declared variations with closed values, no BoxProps;
    • no outer spacing;
    • layout containers;
    • adding a variation.

It drops the examples that taught the opposite, such as a component baking in its own margin and spreading Box props, and the outdated Storybook API.

  • CLAUDE.md: indexes layout.md.

  • Lock: scripts/scan-raw-layout.mjs, run in the lint job with --max 1166.

    • It counts the raw Box, div, span and section elements that screens under apps/meteor/client/views render, and fails when a change adds one.
    • Files in a layout/ folder are containers and are not counted; views/room/layout/RoomLayout.tsx already follows that convention.
    • A file it can't parse fails the scan rather than being skipped.
  • Lock: scripts/scan-style-props.mjs (moved from refactor(fuselage): components take no styling props #42974), run in the lint job with --max 914.

Why

Measured on #42974's head, screens still open 1,632 raw Boxes in 718 files, with 889 distinct prop combinations: nearly every layout is ad hoc. The repeated intents map to a handful of containers: a row or column with gap, text style, an inset section, a page-width form, an empty state.

Follow-ups

  • A Text component over the existing font-scale and text-color tokens. About 350 of those Boxes only set typography.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation

    • Updated the component-building guide with clearer guidance on component types, layout containers, props, spacing, and variations.
    • Added a layout guide with reusable container recommendations and examples for common screen patterns.
  • Chores

    • Added automated checks that track raw layout elements and styling props in the frontend, with findings included in CI.

Walkthrough

The pull request revises frontend component and layout guidance. It adds scanners for Fuselage styling props and raw layout elements, then runs both scanners in the CI lint workflow with configured finding limits.

Changes

Frontend Layout Guidance and Checks

Layer / File(s) Summary
Document component and layout conventions
CLAUDE.md, docs/frontend/building-components.md, docs/frontend/layout.md
The guides describe component placement, accepted props, variations, layout containers, screen composition, and layout recipes.
Scan Fuselage styling props
scripts/scan-style-props.mjs
The scanner identifies undeclared styling props, is and rcx-* props, and layout injectors on Fuselage components. It writes JSON findings and supports an optional maximum.
Scan screen files for raw layout
scripts/scan-raw-layout.mjs
The scanner records Box, div, span, and section JSX elements in screen files. It writes JSON findings and supports an optional maximum.
Run both scans in CI
.github/workflows/ci-code-check.yml
The lint workflow runs both scanners with configured limits and writes their findings under $RUNNER_TEMP.

This PR only adds documentation, two scanners and CI lint steps. Developers may not learn from the guide why Margins/Scrollable usage fails lint, and a file that fails to parse is silently left out of the style-prop count. Neither issue blocks merging, and both are cheap to fix.

CI runs it in the lint job with --max, so the count of styling props passed to Fuselage components cannot grow while they are migrated.
Adds docs/frontend/layout.md and rewrites building-components.md around the rule the Fuselage style-props migration established: Fuselage components take no styling props, screens build their UI from named layout containers, and a container moves from the screen to the app, ui-client and Fuselage as it gets reused.
Screens under apps/meteor/client/views render 1,166 raw Box, div, span and section elements for layout. The new scan lists them, and the lint job fails when a change adds one, so the count can only go down as screens move to named layout containers. Containers in a layout/ folder are not counted.

40-41: 🎯 Functional Correctness

The concern is refuted. The repository uses React ~19.2.8, where function components receive ref through props. The example spreads props onto the <div>, so ref is forwarded.

10-10: 🩺 Stability & Availability

No root dependency change is required.

packages/ui-preview declares vite as a runtime dependency without a hoisting limit. apps/uikit-playground and packages/fuselage also declare it without that limit. The root-level script can therefore resolve Vite independently of the Meteor workspace.

scripts/scan-raw-layout.mjs: 1

10-10: 🩺 Stability & Availability

Do not add a root-level vite dependency.

The installed repository contains node_modules/vite, so the root-level scanner can resolve its import. Vite is also declared by multiple workspaces without workspace-limited hoisting.

Comment thread docs/frontend/layout.md

- A **screen** (anything under `apps/meteor/client/views/`) builds its UI from containers whose name says what they are: `Page`, `PageContent`, `Contextualbar`, `GenericModal`, `GenericTable`, `FieldGroup`, `Stack`, `Card`…
- **`Box` is for building containers**, inside their implementation. A raw `Box` in a screen means a container is missing. CI counts the raw `Box`, `div`, `span` and `section` elements screens render (`node scripts/scan-raw-layout.mjs`) and fails when that count rises above the limit it sets. Files in a `layout/` folder are containers and are not counted.
- A Fuselage component decides how it looks; its container decides where it sits. Nobody passes it a styling prop it doesn't declare as a variation (`margin*`, `width`/`height`/`size`, `flexGrow`/`alignSelf`, `color`, `fontScale`, `padding*`, `display`, `is`) or an `rcx-*` prop. CI enforces this part: `node scripts/scan-style-props.mjs` lists every violation with its `file:line`, and the lint job fails when their count rises above the limit it sets.

Document the Margins and Scrollable scan rules.

The scanner contract also counts elements laid out by Margins or Scrollable, but this rule documents only undeclared styling props and rcx-* props. A developer can follow this page and still fail lint without knowing which layout pattern caused the finding. Add the Margins and Scrollable rule here.

Do not count an unparsed file as clean.

If parseAst rejects a scanned file, this catch removes all of that file’s findings. The scan can then pass --max with an incomplete count. Report the file and fail the scan instead of continuing.
