CharMorph

Blender character tool reimplementing MB-Lab-style morphing (no MB-Lab code). Not a safe CC0 default, and the base you pick decides everything. Every licence involved allows commercial use, but the two mb_* bases are AGPL-3.0 and CharMorph's own licence file says a model made from them "must be distribuited under AGPL 3": a character from mb_female or mb_male cannot ship in a closed-source game. The CC-BY bases (Antonia, Reom) can, with credit. Addon code is GPL-3. Prefer makehuman / mpfb for commercial closed-source mesh exports.

Notes

  • Pick a CC-BY base for a closed game. CharMorph's licence file: "Please use CC-BY models if you want to avoid it" (the AGPL spreading to output models)
  • Open each character's license.txt or config.yaml in CharMorph-db before exporting. On 2026-10-04 the bases were antonia, mb_female, mb_male and reom
  • mb_female, mb_male = AGPL-3 (mb_male/config.yaml: "license: AGPL3"; it has no license.txt). The exported model is AGPL too, so you must offer its source and keep the copyright notice
  • Antonia = CC-BY-3.0. Credit the authors named in its config.yaml
  • Reom = CC-BY per its config.yaml (license: CC-BY, no version stated); it has no license.txt. Credit the authors named in its config.yaml
  • 2D renders are treated differently: CharMorph's licence file says rendered images and videos of a scene with these models "are not considered a derived product" of the database. That helps pre-rendered sprites or cutscenes, not a shipped 3D mesh
  • Maintenance: GitHub API on 2026-10-04: CharMorph not archived, last push 2025-05-29; CharMorph-db last push 2024-07-23

Evidence

  • Live CharMorph-db (2026-07-19): characters/mb_female/license.txt = GNU AGPL v3; characters/antonia/license.txt = CC BY 3.0
  • Live __init__.py: GPL-3 license block for the addon
  • Live license.txt (2026-09-26): "All python files released in the CharMorph package, are released under GNU General Public License 3"; "Each character has its own license stated in select list"; MB-Lab character data "released under GNU Affero General Public License 3"
  • Live CharMorph-db (2026-09-26): characters are antonia, mb_female, mb_male, reom. antonia/license.txt: "licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported License"; reom/config.yaml: "title: Reom (CC-BY)", "license: CC-BY"
  • Live license.txt, LICENSE OF MODELS GENERATED BY THE SOFTWARE (2026-10-04): "The AGPL can be an obstacle in case someone wants to create a closed source game or closed source 3D models using 3D characters made with the lab because the AGPL will propagate from the base models and from the database to the output models. Please use CC-BY models if you want to avoid it."; "As derived product of the AGPL'd database, the models must be distribuited under AGPL 3, with the same copyright of the database."
  • Same file, LICENSE OF RENDERS GENERATED BY THE SOFTWARE (2026-10-04): "Rendered two-dimensional images or two-dimensional videos of a scene that includes 3D models generated with this addon are not considered a derived product of the licensed 3D database and 3D base models."
  • Live CharMorph-db via GitHub API (2026-10-04): antonia/config.yaml: "author: Olaf Delgado-Friedrichs", "license: CC-BY 3.0"; reom/config.yaml: "author: ComplexAce (Mesh)", "additional_authors: Hope (Morphs, Textures)", "license: CC-BY"; mb_male/config.yaml: "title: MB-Lab male (AGPL3)", "license: AGPL3"
  • Same antonia/license.txt (2026-10-04): "the creation of commercial packages based on or related to Antonia is explicitly encouraged."
