Free 2D and 3D game engine and editor under the MIT licence. The Godot add-ons in this folder (Phantom Camera, Dialogic, Terrain3D and the rest) all run inside it, and its Asset Library is the distribution point for many of them. Your game's content is yours: the licence covers the engine, not what you make with it.
- Your game: the licence page says Godot's terms and copyright "do not apply to the content you create with it"
- What you owe: the engine binary you ship with your game is a copy of the MIT-licensed Software, so the copyright notice and licence text must appear somewhere in your documentation. The Godot developers say a link to godotengine.org/license in your documentation or credits is acceptable. This is a notice, not a credit line, so
attribution_required is false as for other MIT entries
- Third-party components bundled in the engine carry their own notices; see the "Complying with Licenses" page of the Godot documentation linked from the licence page
- Filed in
tools/ as a general-purpose editor, next to blender
- Live licence page (2026-09-26): "Godot Engine is free and open source software released under the permissive MIT license (also named Expat license)" and "You can distribute unmodified and changed versions of Godot Engine, even commercially and under a different license (including proprietary)"
- Same page (2026-09-26): "Godot Engine's license terms and copyright do not apply to the content you create with it" and "you are therefore required to include the copyright notice and license statement somewhere in your documentation"
- Live GitHub
godotengine/godot LICENSE.txt (2026-09-26): MIT text, "Copyright (c) 2014-present Godot Engine contributors (see AUTHORS.md)"
