Adds Runcrate as a disabled built-in OpenAI-compatible provider, in the same registry shape as Opper (#2417) and the other API-key providers.

Runcrate is a GPU cloud that also serves open models (DeepSeek V4.1 Flash, GLM-5.3, Qwen3.8 Flash, gpt-oss 120B and others) behind an OpenAI-compatible API. Five open models are free with a GitHub account, within a limited allowance that resets.

  • defaults.ts: runcrate, base URL https://api.runcrate.ai/v1, disabled by default, keys at https://www.runcrate.ai/dashboard/api-keys?utm_source=deepchat. Every Runcrate link carries only utm_source=deepchat, like JieKou.AI.
  • providerRegistry.ts: ...OPENAI_BASE with modelSource: 'runcrate', checkStrategy: 'generate-text' and checkModelId: 'deepseek-ai/DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash', like Tokenlab and Upstage. Runcrate's GET /v1/models answers without a key, so the fetch-models check would accept any key; a short chat call does reject a bad one. Embeddings use the OpenAI strategy (Runcrate serves BAAI/bge-m3).
  • aiSdkProvider.ts: a runcrate model source, following apimodels. It reads the public /v1/models catalog and keeps only models with text in both input_modalities and output_modalities, so image, video, embedding and transcription models stay out of the chat picker. It maps context_length to context, max_output_length to max output, supported_features (tools, reasoning) to function calling and reasoning, and image input to vision.
  • Icon: a single-colour SVG mark, registered with the other mono icons.
  • README grids: Runcrate next to AI Stupid Level.
  • Tests: a defaults case, a check case that pins the generate-text check to the chat model, and a catalog case that feeds text, image, embeddings and audio-in models and expects only the text model, with its context and output limits.

Validation (rebased on current dev):

  • vitest run test/main/provider/basicApiKeyProviders.test.ts test/main/provider/defaultProviders.test.ts: 80 passed
  • pnpm run typecheck:node: clean; oxfmt --check and oxlint on the touched files: clean
  • Live catalog today: 193 entries, 140 with text in and text out, which is what the new source keeps.
  • Earlier, live through AiSdkProvider with the real endpoint (throwaway test, not committed): check() with a valid key returned { isOk: true }; with an invalid key { isOk: false, errorMsg: "Invalid or revoked API key" }; runText on deepseek-ai/DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash answered "Five" to "What is 2+3?".

This PR was prepared with AI assistance (an AI coding agent wrote the change and ran the checks above).

Disclosure: I work on Runcrate.

Reviewed at 82cc28d48bf04687b08d5da16283fe88c4156f10. The provider wiring is right and both checks are green after the first-time-contributor workflows were approved. One thing needs a decision before merge.

Blocking: the chat model list includes models that cannot chat

GET https://api.runcrate.ai/v1/models returns 189 entries. 50 of them do not produce text: 24 image, 13 video, 9 embeddings and 4 audio. Examples: Qwen/Qwen-Image, google/imagen-4.0-fast, kuaishou/kling-v3-omni-video, BAAI/bge-m3, Qwen/Qwen3-Embedding-8B, openai/whisper-large-v3-turbo.

runcrate inherits modelSource: 'openai', and fetchDefaultOpenAIModels() maps every id to a chat model without reading the vendor's output_modalities. There is no runcrate entry in PublicProviderConf's dist/all.json yet, so the app falls back to this runtime list. Those 50 models would show up in the chat model picker and fail once selected.

The repository already has the matching precedent: apimodels got its own modelSource so only modality: 'chat' entries survive. Please do the same here — keep records whose output_modalities contains text — or tell me that the full GPU catalog in the chat picker is intentional and I will drop the objection.

Related and lower priority: the same response carries context_length, max_output_length and supported_features, which the generic source drops. Models whose ids cannot be matched in the provider DB will show the 16k context / 4k output defaults. If you add a runcrate source anyway, mapping those fields costs almost nothing.

What is already correct

  • The defaults entry is disabled by default and follows the Opper/Requesty shape. No migration or existing-user behavior changes.
  • checkStrategy: 'generate-text' is the right call: I confirmed /v1/models answers without a key, so a model-list check would accept any credential. deepseek-ai/DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash exists at the live endpoint and returned 200 on all four website links.
  • The icon is registered as a mono icon, and all three README grids get the same row.
  • The two tests follow the existing per-provider patterns rather than inventing a new harness. They pass locally (72 focused tests), as do format, lint, git diff --check and a merge against current dev.
  • No over-design, no breaking change, no new dependency.

Optional

  • The official website URL carries utm_source=deepchat&utm_medium=directory&utm_campaign=gpu_pricing, while the API-key URL does not. JieKou.AI sets a simpler utm_source on every link, so there is precedent; either drop the campaign parameters or apply them consistently.
  • Once the catalog filter lands, add one assertion for it. The current tests pin the provider definition and check strategy but not the model list.

Details

  • Scope: README{,.zh,.jp}.md, src/main/provider/defaults.ts, src/main/provider/providerRegistry.ts, runcrate.svg, modelIconRegistry.ts, test/main/provider/basicApiKeyProviders.test.ts, test/main/provider/defaultProviders.test.ts.
  • Verified: PR Check and Package Check both success; head stays at 82cc28d4; merge with dev@c8b67872 is clean; diff is 9 files, +93/-0.
  • Not verified locally: full Vitest and typecheck suites (the review worktree has no installed dependencies), so CI is the authority there.

Add a runcrate modelSource that keeps text-in, text-out models from the public /v1/models catalog and maps context_length, max_output_length and supported_features. Use utm_source=deepchat on every Runcrate link.

@zerob13 thanks for the review, done in 60646b2 (rebased on current dev):

  • New runcrate model source, following apimodels, and the provider now uses it. It reads /v1/models and keeps a model only when output_modalities has text and input_modalities has text. The input check also keeps out the speech-to-text models such as openai/whisper-large-v3-turbo, which output text but take audio.
  • It maps context_length to contextLength, max_output_length to maxTokens, supported_features (tools, reasoning) to function calling and reasoning, and image input to vision.
  • UTM: every Runcrate link (website, API key, docs, models and the three READMEs) now carries only utm_source=deepchat, like JieKou.AI.
  • Test: a catalog case in basicApiKeyProviders.test.ts feeds a text model, an image model, an embeddings model and an audio-in model, and expects only the text model, with its context and output limits. The check test now expects modelSource: 'runcrate'.

Results:

  • vitest run test/main/provider/basicApiKeyProviders.test.ts test/main/provider/defaultProviders.test.ts: 80 passed
  • pnpm run typecheck:node, oxlint and oxfmt --check on the touched files: clean
  • Against the live endpoint through AiSdkProvider.fetchModels (throwaway, not committed): 140 of 193 models kept, none of the image, video, embedding or transcription ones.

Approved at 60646b22c6acf2d281999d290b6709458f7d10cb. The blocking item from my previous review is fixed, and I found nothing else that needs to change before merge.

What changed since 82cc28d4

The chat catalog now only contains models that can actually chat. runcrate gets its own model source, which keeps records whose output_modalities contains text. Models that produce text but do not take text input are dropped as well. Against the live catalog this keeps 141 of 194 entries, so the image, video, embedding and transcription models no longer reach the model picker.

The published limits and features are used. context_length maps to context length, max_output_length to max output, and supported_features to function calling and reasoning. Image input sets the vision flag. Every model in the current catalog carries both numbers, so the generic 16k/4k defaults no longer apply here.

The tracking parameters are consistent. All four provider links and the README link now carry exactly utm_source=deepchat.

Verification

  • Focused tests pass locally in a worktree: 80 tests across basicApiKeyProviders.test.ts and defaultProviders.test.ts.
  • The new test covers the filter itself: text chat kept; image output, embedding output, audio input and missing modalities dropped; context, output limit, tools, reasoning and ownership mapped.
  • oxfmt --check and oxlint report no issues on the changed files.
  • tsc -p tsconfig.node.json reports no errors in the changed files. The worktree still shows unrelated pre-existing errors from a missing workspace package.
  • The live endpoint was checked directly: 194 models, 50 without text output, every record carrying input_modalities, context_length, max_output_length and supported_features. deepseek-ai/DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash is present, returns text, and accepts image input.
  • I approved the two first-time-contributor workflows for 60646b22. PR Check and Package Check are running now.

Notes, none blocking

  • The model name stays the catalog id even though the API also publishes a display name. That matches the other OpenAI-compatible sources, so keeping it consistent is fine.
  • The filter is a per-provider model source rather than a shared modalities source. With only apimodels and runcrate doing this today, a shared abstraction would be premature.

Details

  • Head: 60646b22; base merge: 207685009; diff: 10 files, +194/-0.
  • Prior review: 82cc28d4 with changes requested.
  • Not verified locally: full test suite and renderer typecheck. CI is the authority there.

Reviewed at 84854f5ca5c87d7bdcf29f8a4353928b6891b14c. The behavior change is right, but one formatting issue makes CI fail.

Blocking: format:check fails on aiSdkProvider.ts

The new guard now fits on a single line, and the formatter wants it that way. The current code keeps the old multi-line shape:

if (
  !modelId ||
  !outputModalities?.includes('text') ||
  !inputModalities?.includes('text')
) {

pnpm run format:check, which PR Check runs, reports src/main/provider/providers/aiSdkProvider.ts. Running pnpm run format turns it into:

if (!modelId || !outputModalities?.includes('text') || !inputModalities?.includes('text')) {

Please run the formatter and push. No logic change is needed.

What changed since 60646b22

  • The catalog filter now requires input_modalities to contain text, so a record that outputs text without declaring text input is dropped. This matches the PR description and CodeRabbit's inline suggestion.
  • The test now includes a text-output record with no input_modalities, so the stricter rule is covered.

Verification

  • vitest run test/main/provider/basicApiKeyProviders.test.ts test/main/provider/defaultProviders.test.ts at this head: 80 passed.
  • oxlint on the touched files: clean.
  • tsc -p tsconfig.node.json: no errors in the changed provider files.
  • git diff --check: clean.
  • I approved the two first-time-contributor workflows for this head; both are queued now.

Optional

  • Because inputModalities cannot be missing after the guard, ...(inputModalities ? { vision: inputModalities.includes('image') } : {}) can become a plain vision: inputModalities.includes('image'). Not required for merge.
  • Not verified locally: full test suite and renderer typecheck. CI is the authority there.

Details

  • Head: 84854f5c; base merge: 207685009; delta since the approval at 60646b22: 2 files, +2/-1.
  • Previous review: APPROVED at 60646b22.

Approved. The formatting blocker from the previous round is fixed.

This round adds only 27323b63 (style(provider): format Runcrate catalog guard), which collapses the guard in fetchRuncrateModels onto one line. pnpm run format:check now passes on that file, so PR Check gets past the formatting step. No behavior changed.

Full-PR check

  • No over-design. The provider is wired the same way as the other OpenAI-compatible built-ins: a defaults entry (src/main/provider/defaults.ts:654), a registry definition with a text-generation key check (src/main/provider/providerRegistry.ts), one model source, an icon, and the README grids.
  • The dedicated runcrate model source is justified. Runcrate's public /v1/models mixes chat, image, embedding and audio models; a plain OpenAI listing would fill the chat picker with unusable entries. Filtering on text-in/text-out is the smallest correct scope.
  • No breaking change. The provider is disabled by default, and no persisted setting or database migration is touched.
  • Tests are proportionate: one defaults case, one credential-check case, one catalog case. The catalog case covers the cases that matter (image output, embeddings, audio input, missing modalities).
  • Logic is sound at src/main/provider/providers/aiSdkProvider.ts:2144. The guard requires a non-empty id plus text in both directions; context and output limits go through toPositiveFiniteNumber; tools / reasoning map to function calling and reasoning; image input sets vision; owned_by is trimmed.
  • Local verification at this head: vitest run test/main/provider/basicApiKeyProviders.test.ts test/main/provider/defaultProviders.test.ts → 80 passed; oxfmt --check and oxlint clean on the touched files; typecheck:node reports no errors in the changed provider files (the remaining errors are pre-existing module-resolution issues in this checkout, unrelated to this PR).
  • I approved the first-time-contributor workflow runs so the CI checks could start.

Non-blocking nit (fine to leave as is)

  • src/main/provider/providers/aiSdkProvider.ts:2174: after the guard, inputModalities is always defined, so ...(inputModalities ? { vision: inputModalities.includes('image') } : {}) is redundant. A plain vision: inputModalities.includes('image') reads more directly.
