From 3da3fc0aee069955135be343a6785376e72686ad Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: victor-doi Date: Wed, 28 Oct 2026 20:39:10 -0500 Subject: [PATCH 1/3] feat(core): let agents ask another session a question Two native tools over the existing session inbox. ask({session, question}) resolves an existing top-level session by exact id or exact title, lists metadata only, and queues one bounded question into that session's inbox. answer({replyTo, answer}) lets the target reply once back to the asker as a message. Texts are capped at 4000 characters, three questions per pair, and no message text or system prompt is read; the duplicate-answer guard compares stored metadata only. Zero schema, protocol, table, or client changes. --- packages/core/src/plugin/internal.ts | 2 + packages/core/src/tool/plugin/ask.ts | 298 +++++++++++++++ packages/core/test/location-layer.test.ts | 4 + packages/core/test/tool-ask.test.ts | 352 ++++++++++++++++++ packages/web/src/content/docs/permissions.mdx | 2 + packages/web/src/content/docs/tools.mdx | 42 +++ 6 files changed, 700 insertions(+) create mode 100644 packages/core/src/tool/plugin/ask.ts create mode 100644 packages/core/test/tool-ask.test.ts diff --git a/packages/core/src/plugin/internal.ts b/packages/core/src/plugin/internal.ts index 0b00caa0ccc4..64756b3a22ee 100644 --- a/packages/core/src/plugin/internal.ts +++ b/packages/core/src/plugin/internal.ts @@ -68,6 +68,7 @@ import { Skill } from "../skill.js" import { SkillDiscovery } from "../skill/discovery.js" import { Watcher } from "../filesystem/watcher.js" import { PatchTool } from "../tool/plugin/patch.js" +import { AskTool } from "../tool/plugin/ask.js" import { EditTool } from "../tool/plugin/edit.js" import { GlobTool } from "../tool/plugin/glob.js" import { GrepTool } from "../tool/plugin/grep.js" @@ -233,6 +234,7 @@ const pre = [ ...OptimizePlugin.Plugins, VerbosityPlugin.Plugin, IdentityPlugin.Plugin, + AskTool.Plugin, EditTool.Plugin, GlobTool.Plugin, GrepTool.Plugin, diff --git a/packages/core/src/tool/plugin/ask.ts b/packages/core/src/tool/plugin/ask.ts new file mode 100644 index 000000000000..50eb45323cae --- /dev/null +++ b/packages/core/src/tool/plugin/ask.ts @@ -0,0 +1,298 @@ +// A question is a user-role message to the target session, and this channel is cooperative, not enforced, like subagent completions. +export * as AskTool from "./ask.js" + +import { ToolFailure } from "@opencode/ai/effect" +import type { Context } from "@opencode/plugin/effect/plugin" +import type { Tool } from "@opencode/schema/tool" +import { Effect, Option, Schema } from "effect" +import { Permission } from "../../permission.js" +import { Session } from "../../session.js" +import type { SessionInbox } from "../../session/inbox.js" +import { SessionMessage } from "../../session/message.js" +import { SessionSchema } from "../../session/schema.js" + +export const name = "ask" +export const answerName = "answer" + +const MAX_PENDING_QUESTIONS = 3 + +const QuestionMetadata = Schema.Struct({ + source: Schema.Literal("ask"), + kind: Schema.Literal("question"), + from: SessionSchema.ID, + to: SessionSchema.ID, + from_title: Schema.String, + question: Schema.String, +}) +const readQuestion = Schema.decodeUnknownOption(QuestionMetadata) + +const AnswerMetadata = Schema.Struct({ + source: Schema.Literal("ask"), + kind: Schema.Literal("answer"), + replyTo: SessionMessage.ID, + from: SessionSchema.ID, +}) +const readAnswer = Schema.decodeUnknownOption(AnswerMetadata) + +export const description = + "Ask another top-level session a question. The question is queued into the target's inbox; the target answers it with the `answer` tool when it runs, and the answer arrives later as a message in your session. Do not wait on it or poll for it. + +Use it when work spans sessions, such as checking a session that is running a background job. The only other cross-session path is parent-to-child delegation, which only reaches that session's own children. + +The `session` argument is an exact session ID or an exact title. Discovery is metadata only: the tool lists session IDs and titles, and never reads another session's messages or system prompt. The current session, a caller or target that is a child session, and archived, cross-project, unknown, or ambiguous targets are refused. An ambiguous title is refused with up to 10 matching candidates. + +The target sees the question framed as data, not as a user instruction, and the answer is an observation, not approval. Each text is capped at 4000 characters, a session pair can hold at most 3 unanswered questions, and asking an identical question while it is still pending is refused. + +--- + +### answer + +Answer a question another session asked you. + +```json title="opencode.json" {4} +{ + "$schema": "https://opencode.ai/config.json", + "permission": { + "answer": "allow" + } +} +``` + +This tool replies once to a question in your session's inbox and delivers the reply to the asking session. The `replyTo` argument is the question ID from the message you received, and `answer` is your reply, capped at 4000 characters. + +Only the session that was asked can answer, and each question can be answered once. The reply is steered into the asking session, so it arrives at that session's next step boundary ahead of queued prompts. It reaches the asking session as data framed with its question, not as user input, so it cannot approve permissions or replace instructions. + +--- + ## Custom tools Custom tools let you define your own functions that the LLM can call. These are defined in your config file and can execute arbitrary code. From 6610ed695a0073cbe609de8d9f679c0fa9d50ea2 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: victor-doi Date: Wed, 28 Oct 2026 21:03:56 -0500 Subject: [PATCH 2/3] fix(core): scope ask discovery and enforce the unanswered cap Resolve titles among top-level sessions in the caller's project and compare them exactly, so other projects, child sessions, and same-title sessions elsewhere never appear as candidates or turn into a false ambiguity. Count unanswered questions across the target's inbox and promoted history, then match them against answers recorded in the asking session, so the three-question cap and the duplicate guard survive delivery. Stop the answer leg from waking the asker: replies are steered without resume so two sessions cannot ping-pong into unattended runs. The question leg still wakes the target, and the ask tool says the answer arrives at the asker's next step. Stamp `opencode.origin` ({kind, sessionID, title}) on both legs, matching the shared cross-session provenance key in #60042. That PR is still open, so the same shape is written literally rather than imported. --- packages/core/src/tool/plugin/ask.ts | 119 +++++++++++------- packages/core/test/tool-ask.test.ts | 157 +++++++++++++++++++++++- packages/web/src/content/docs/tools.mdx | 8 +- 3 files changed, 232 insertions(+), 52 deletions(-) diff --git a/packages/core/src/tool/plugin/ask.ts b/packages/core/src/tool/plugin/ask.ts index 50eb45323cae..df9db83f1f96 100644 --- a/packages/core/src/tool/plugin/ask.ts +++ b/packages/core/src/tool/plugin/ask.ts @@ -7,7 +7,6 @@ import type { Tool } from "@opencode/schema/tool" import { Effect, Option, Schema } from "effect" import { Permission } from "../../permission.js" import { Session } from "../../session.js" -import type { SessionInbox } from "../../session/inbox.js" import { SessionMessage } from "../../session/message.js" import { SessionSchema } from "../../session/schema.js" @@ -34,8 +33,15 @@ const AnswerMetadata = Schema.Struct({ }) const readAnswer = Schema.decodeUnknownOption(AnswerMetadata) +// The shared cross-session provenance key for session-originated messages (#60042), stamped literally until it merges. +const origin = (session: SessionSchema.Info) => ({ + kind: "session", + sessionID: session.id, + title: session.title ??
