Problem

#135 makes the three Standby crawlers shared, which means they keep the proxy the first caller asked for. Every later caller's proxyConfiguration and serpProxyGroup are silently ignored.

Fix

Give the crawlers a single ProxyConfiguration whose newUrlFunction reads the caller's proxy settings off request.userData and returns the matching URL. Crawlee calls it per request, so one crawler serves callers who each asked for something different. Parsed configurations are cached per settings, so Actor.createProxyConfiguration is not called on every request.

The browser crawler needs three things for this, each of them load-bearing:

  • launchContext.useIncognitoPages. Without it BrowserPool hands a request whichever browser has capacity and ignores the proxy that request resolved to, so every caller goes through the proxy the first browser launched with.
  • A pre-launch hook that unsets launchContext.proxyUrl. BrowserPool launches the browser with the proxy of whichever request triggered the launch, and an incognito context that resolved no proxy falls back to it, so a caller who asked for no proxy went out through the previous caller's. This also affects Normal mode.
  • newUrlFunction returning null when there is no request. Crawlee resolves a proxy when it launches a browser too, and that browser serves everyone, so it gets none. This also keeps the launch from failing for a user who has no proxy access.

Verified on a real crawler against a local proxy: one Firefox process, a request with a proxy goes through it, and a request that asked for none never touches it. tests/proxy-routing.test.ts covers both, and fails if any of the three settings above is removed.

Still open

  • The cost of incognito pages is not measured yet. Each page gets its own browser context and its own local proxy server, and pages no longer share the HTTP cache, so shared JS and CSS are fetched per page. This wants numbers from the 2 GB instance setting before the Standby switch.
  • isManInTheMiddle is one mutable field on the shared configuration, and Crawlee reads it right after newUrlFunction to decide whether to ignore TLS errors, so concurrent requests race on it. On master it was written once per crawler at startup.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Search and content requests now carry proxy options. Shared crawler configuration resolves proxy URLs per request. Proxy validation can throw UserInputError or call abortRun, depending on the caller and Actor state. Playwright uses incognito pages and clears the browser launch proxy. Tests cover request-specific routing, requests without a proxy, and configuration reuse.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 51e7c

Long-lived Standby runs can accumulate proxy configurations as callers vary their settings. The remaining risk is bounded enough for merge with owner awareness, but the cache should be capped.

Let's stress test this incognito pages idea 👍

Bound the proxy configuration cache.

getProxyConfiguration stores one entry for each distinct serialized proxyOptions value in a module-level Map. Successful entries are never evicted, so varied valid proxy URLs can grow the cache for the lifetime of the Standby process. Add a bounded cache with eviction. Normalize equivalent options before keying only if the cache implementation requires it; sorting object keys alone does not address distinct valid proxy URLs.
