Description

Fixes CORE-4120.

Cancelling a MetaMask request currently shows “Something went wrong.” UserProfile now shows “Wallet connection was cancelled. Please try again.” for wallet-reported rejection and lets the user retry, consistent with passkey cancellation feedback. Late responses after closing the profile are ignored, and an already-pending request explains what to resolve in the wallet.

Cancellation stays in the wallet UI. If MetaMask closes a prompt without settling its request, close and reopen the profile to release Clerk’s pending state. Clerk does not cancel MetaMask’s request. Verified on the PR preview in Brave with real MetaMask, Base, Coinbase Wallet, and OKX flows, plus Solana through MetaMask. Each completed verification and persisted after reload. MetaMask and OKX recovered after abandoning a prompt and reopening UserProfile. MetaMask displayed pending-request guidance and ignored late success and rejection. With MetaMask locked and existing site permissions, retry queued a second signature; rejecting the old signature did not disturb the new attempt. Base and Coinbase popup closure released Clerk's pending state and allowed retry. Coinbase and OKX connection and signature rejection, and Solana signature rejection, displayed recovery messages and allowed retry. The exact locked MetaMask permissions-prompt case remains unverified. Initial OKX locked-prompt testing was interrupted by a Clerk session redirect loop; the preview recovered on reopening.

Error messages rendered with controlled providers in browser feature tests.

Before: wallet rejection After: wallet cancellation After: request already pending
Generic error after wallet rejection Wallet cancellation message Pending wallet request guidance

Walkthrough

The pending-action hook now passes an AbortSignal to actions and aborts active actions on unmount. Wallet connection and verification operations receive the signal and check it around asynchronous work. Provider cancellation and pending-request errors map to localized messages. Controller updates are guarded after abort. Tests cover cancellation, retries, pending requests, and late provider responses.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review bf3ed

A narrow Solana pending-signature case shows generic failure instead of wallet guidance, and the controller documentation is misleading. The change is otherwise bounded and mergeable with follow-up.

Explanation

The title "fix(mosaic): recover from abandoned wallet connections" matches the main change. The changeset adds clearer cancellation and pending-request messages in UserProfile, ignores late wallet responses after the profile closes, and adds abort signal handling so reopening starts a fresh connection flow. The title is specific and uses the conventional commit format. It does not name the cancellation message or the abort handling, but it does not need to cover every detail.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description explains the problem and the fix. It covers the cancellation message that replaces the generic error, the pending-request guidance, and the handling of late wallet responses after the profile closes. It also gives manual test coverage, notes unverified cases, and includes screenshots and a checklist. It relates directly to the changeset.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 20.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 5 functions across 9 files. Fix the broken antecedent before the "not for" list.

The new text puts the reset() sentence directly before "It is not for:". The pronoun "It" now refers to reset(). The list below ("a form → useForm", "a confirm step → ...") describes where usePendingAction does not fit, not reset(). Readers get the wrong guidance. Name the subject explicitly.

Matches MetaMask rejection shows cancel message, retry works

Tested on bf3edee5, untouched since — Rejecting the MetaMask account request shows the cancellation message instead of “Something went wrong.”; Connect stays usable and a retry connects and verifies the wallet, as it already did before.

Preserve Solana provider error codes before wrapping signature failures.

The shared Solana adapter catches every signMessage failure and replaces numeric provider errors with string-coded ClerkRuntimeError values. The mapper added in this PR can no longer recognize 4001 or -32002, so a pending request can show the generic signature-generation error instead of instructions to resolve the request in the wallet. Preserve these provider errors in packages/shared/src/internal/clerk-js/web3.ts, which owns this transformation boundary.

The usePendingAction unmount signal is needed: without it, approving an abandoned MetaMask request after the section closes still creates a wallet. Two things before this merges:

1. Add a regression test that fails without the fix

With use-pending-action.ts and the controller reverted to the merge base (86bdfb5), all 93 web3 feature tests still pass, including the "ignores abandoned … after reopening" cases, so none of them catch the bug. This test fails without the fix (expected [ '0xabandoned', '0xnew' ] to deeply equal [ '0xnew' ]) and passes on this branch:

__tests__/user-profile-web3-wallets-late-approval.feature.test.tsx
import { act, screen, waitFor } from '@testing-library/react';
import userEvent from '@testing-library/user-event';
import { expect, it, vi } from 'vitest';

import { deferred } from '../../../../__tests__/async';
import { serveFapi } from '../../../../__tests__/feature/fake-fapi';
import { renderWithClerk } from '../../../../__tests__/feature/render';
import { UserProfileWeb3WalletsSection } from '../user-profile-web3-wallets-section';
import { signedInWallets } from './user-profile-web3-wallets.fixtures';

it('keeps only the new wallet when MetaMask approves an abandoned request after the section closed', async () => {
  const abandoned = deferred<string[]>();
  const request = vi.fn(({ method }: { method: string }) =>
    method === 'eth_requestAccounts' ? abandoned.promise : Promise.resolve('signature'),
  );
  vi.stubGlobal('ethereum', { request });
  const fapi = serveFapi(signedInWallets(['web3_metamask_signature']));
  const view = await renderWithClerk(<UserProfileWeb3WalletsSection />);
  const user = userEvent.setup();

  await user.click(await screen.findByRole('button', { name: 'Connect MetaMask' }));
  await waitFor(() => expect(request).toHaveBeenCalledWith(expect.objectContaining({ method: 'eth_requestAccounts' })));
  view.rerender(<div />);
  await act(() => abandoned.resolve(['0xabandoned']));

  request.mockImplementation(({ method }) =>
    Promise.resolve(method === 'eth_requestAccounts' ? ['0xnew'] : 'signature'),
  );
  view.rerender(<UserProfileWeb3WalletsSection />);
  await user.click(await screen.findByRole('button', { name: 'Connect MetaMask' }));

  await waitFor(() => expect(fapi.client.sessions[0]?.user.web3_wallets[0]?.verification?.status).toBe('verified'));
  expect(fapi.client.sessions[0]?.user.web3_wallets.map(wallet => wallet.web3_wallet)).toEqual(['0xnew']);
});

2. Drop the signal.aborted guards in the controller

The signal only aborts on unmount, and picker / owner are local useState in this controller, so those setPicker / setOwner calls only skip updates on a component that's already gone. Removing all four keeps the web3 feature tests (94, including the one above) and unit tests (53) passing. Keep passing signal into connect / verify: the model's throwIfAborted checks are what prevent the stray wallet.
