Description

Expo apps can wait minutes for a token, or never finish loading, when a Frontend API request lands on a dead connection. React Native's fetch applies no timeout, so that request never settles.

  • Token requests. getToken() put the pending token request in the token cache, so every later call waited on it until the app restarted. Outside a browser, each token request, including the expired_token retry, is now aborted after 10 seconds where it is created, in Session#createTokenResolver. It rejects with a network_error, the cache drops it, and the existing getToken() retry mints a new token. Background token refreshes share that path, so they are bounded too.
  • Native startup. The 7 second bound from fix(clerk-js): fail fast when the origin is slow at load #9065 only applied to the web load path. The native load path now applies it to the first /environment and /client requests when cached resources can take over (__experimental_resourceCache). A timeout reports as a network_error, so the existing cached-resources fallback runs. Without a cache there is no fallback and nothing retries a failed load, so that path keeps waiting rather than turning a slow startup into a permanent error.
  • Background reload. __internal_reloadInitialResources gets the same bound. Expo's resource retry loop calls it, and one stalled reload used to block that loop for good.

The token bound applies only outside a browser (no document), so token requests in web apps are unchanged. Browsers already time out a request that never settles, and clerk-js hotloads into web apps. It is set to 10 seconds rather than 7 because the token request is a POST that the network layer never retries.

The simulator and emulator runs below use specs/explored/stalled-requests.e2e.ts on iOS and Android. Before runs are on the merge base, and after runs are on 71fb266. Both builds carried the same local test-app patch, which is not committed. The patch turns on __experimental_resourceCache in the test app, and wraps the app's fetch so that a chosen Frontend API request never settles, the way a request on a dead connection behaves. It also adds buttons to the Token cache screen that stall the next token request, call getToken({ skipCache: true }), and stall the next launch. No test user can reach a stalled request without it, and the test app has no screen that calls getToken() and does not turn on the resource cache. On the merge base, the token stays pending and the cold start never leaves the loading spinner. On this branch, the token arrives after 14 s and the cold start shows the signed-in user from the cache. Runs: iOS r20261104-101006-eea3 (before) and r20261104-111732-0db3 (after), Android r20261104-102135-f704 (before) and r20261104-111936-935d (after). Not run: a physical device, the reporter's freeze proxy, and an app without the resource cache, whose startup this PR leaves unbounded.

A Frontend API request on a dead connection never settles on React
Native, because its fetch applies no timeout. The pending token request
stayed in the token cache, so every later getToken() waited on it until
the app restarted, and the native load never finished.

Bound the token request at 10s so it rejects and leaves the cache, and
bound the native /environment and /client requests at 7s when cached
resources can take over. A timeout reports as a network error, so the
cached-resources fallback and Expo's reload retries handle it.

Walkthrough

Non-standard browser startup and reloads now fetch initial resources through a shared helper that can abort timed-out requests. Startup uses the timeout when cached-resource fallback is available; reloads always use it. Non-browser session token requests use a 10-second time limit and an abort signal. Tests cover stalled startup, reload, and token requests.

  • clerk/javascript#10582 — Both changes add abort-signal support and bounded requests for /environment and session-token requests.
  • clerk/javascript#10468 — The timeout rejects stalled token requests; retry behavior depends on the token cache removing rejected resolvers.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: it aborts stalled token requests and native startup requests in clerk-js, with the fix prefix. It matches the changeset, the Session/Token/Environment/clerk.ts edits, and the linked objectives. The title is 62 characters and reads as a single clear sentence.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Directly linked issue #10577 is titled for React Native. Its coding requirements are: bound the /environment fetch in load(), bound the session-token POST in Session.getToken(), drop the failed token cache entry, and let a later getToken() or load() recover.

(1) Token request bound [#10577]: At the reviewed head, Session.ts #createTokenResolver defines createToken. When inBrowser() is false, createToken creates an AbortController, calls timeLimit(Token.create(..., controller.signal), TOKEN_REQUEST_TIMEOUT_MS = 10_000, controller), and maps an aborted timeout to ClerkRuntimeError with code network_error. Both the session-minter request and the legacy request use createToken. The legacy MissingExpiredTokenError retry also uses createToken. Token.ts forwards the signal to BaseResource._fetch. The rejection reaches the existing getToken() rejection path, which drops the pending cache entry. Background refreshes use the same path.

Change since the previous review: in browsers, createToken now calls Token.create directly with no timeout. Browser token requests therefore match the base behavior. The issue targets React Native, and the PR states that browsers already time out stalled requests. This browser exclusion does not leave the React Native requirement unmet.

(2) Environment bound on native startup [#10577]: clerk.ts #fetchInitialResources passes an abort signal to Environment.fetch and Client.fetch. When cached-resource fallback is available, the first attempt uses fetchMaxTries: 1 and timeLimit with INITIALIZATION_TIMEOUT_MS. An aborted timeout becomes network_error, which runs the existing cached-resources fallback. This matches the reproduced case, which uses __experimental_resourceCache.

(3) Reload bound: __internal_reloadInitialResources uses the bounded helper.

Residual gap: without cached-resource fallback, the initial /environment and /client requests have no timeout. The PR states this on purpose, because a timeout there would become a permanent load error with no retry. The reproduced scenario and the measured recovery both use the resource cache. The gap is documented and does not contradict the reproduced case.

Uncertainty: the value of INITIALIZATION_TIMEOUT_MS and the inBrowser() definition were not re-read in this pass. They are taken from the PR description and the prior review.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

All changed code serves the bounding of stalled Frontend API requests in #10577.

  • Session.ts: the TOKEN_REQUEST_TIMEOUT_MS bound and createToken helper implement the token requirement. The new inBrowser() guard limits that bound to non-browser runtimes. This guard is part of the same token change, and the PR description explains it. The skip_cache search value stays the same.
  • Token.ts and Environment.ts: optional AbortSignal parameters carry the abort into _fetch and _baseGet. This plumbing is required.
  • clerk.ts: #fetchInitialResources bounds native startup when cached resources exist, and bounds reloads.
  • Test files (clerk.test.ts, Session.test.ts): coverage for the new timeouts, retries, and the browser no-timeout path.
  • .changeset/bound-stalled-native-requests.md: patch changeset for @clerk/clerk-js.

No unrelated behavior change was found.

Matches Stalled token request aborts and retries

In a React Native-like runtime, every getToken() call used to hang on the stalled request. Now it is aborted at 10s, the retry fetches a new token, and all three calls get it. Timeouts surface as network_error.

overall budget, and retain the existing per-request timeout behavior where
compatible.
- Line 566: Update the getToken request flow so the timeout applies

own fresh AbortController and apply TOKEN_REQUEST_TIMEOUT_MS separately, so the
retry receives a full timeout window.
- Line 555: Update both timeout-wrapped Token.create calls in Session to convert
timeout rejections into ClerkRuntimeError instances with the network_error code,
while preserving non-timeout errors so AuthCookieService.handleGetTokenError can
recognize exhausted network retries.

The expired_token retry shared the first request's timer, so a slow first
request left it little time. A timeout also rejected with a plain Error,
which AuthCookieService does not treat as a network failure.

hmm this applies to web also, meaning a token request that takes more than 10s now never succeeds there 🤔 not breaking, just a behavior change

Any chance we could scope it to native?

Fixed in 71fb266. The 10 s token timeout now applies only outside a browser, so token requests in web apps behave as before.

Fix `getToken()` and React Native startup hanging when a Frontend API request never gets a response. A stalled session token request is now aborted after 10 seconds and retried, so later `getToken()` calls no longer wait on it until the app restarts. In React Native apps that use `__experimental_resourceCache`, a stalled `/environment` or `/client` request at startup is aborted after 7 seconds and Clerk loads from the cached resources.

Applied your wording in 71fb266, with one change. Since the token timeout is now native-only, the changeset says token requests in browsers are unchanged instead of "in browsers too".

Browsers already time out a request that never settles, and a 10s cap
changed behavior for every web app that hotloads clerk-js. Keep token
requests in browsers as they were.
