.TH MAILSYNC 1 "2026-10-11" "mutt-wizard"
.SH NAME
mailsync \- sync mail accounts set up with
.B mw.
.SH SYNOPSIS
.B mailsync
[
.I ACCOUNTS
]...
.SH DESCRIPTION
.B mailsync
syncs the mail of all accounts set up with
.B
mw,
or if account names are given, syncs only those accounts.
.B
mailsync
is a wrapper for
.B mbsync
and
.B
mpop,
but also automatically reindexes new mail with
.B notmuch,
gives notifications if new mail is found and can also be set as a cronjob to sync and index mail quietly in the background.
.SH COMMANDS
.TP
.B mailsync
sync all mail accounts and notify user if there is new mail
.TP
.B mailsync account@example.org
only sync the
.B account@example.org
account.
.SH CONFIGURATION
While
.B
mailsync
gives notifications on the arrival of new mail by default, this can be disabled by setting the variable
.I
MAILSYNC_MUTE=1.
.PP
mailsync is a POSIX
.I sh
script that runs on Linux, macOS and OpenBSD. Because it is meant to run as
a cron job (see
.I mw -t),
it re-establishes a usable
.I PATH
(its own directory plus
.I /usr/local/bin)
itself instead of relying on the cron environment. The same applies to the
D-Bus session bus address, which is reconstructed from
.I $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR/bus
or
.I /run/user/UID/bus
when one exists and none is exported.
.PP
Desktop notifications require
.I notify-send
(libnotify) and a D-Bus session; X displays are detected through
.I /tmp/.X11-unix,
which works for Xorg/XWayland on Linux and for Xenocara on OpenBSD. Without
these components, mail is still synchronized; only the notifications are
skipped.
