[FEATURE]: Add Fallback UI for WebGL-Unsupported or Failed 3D Book Rendering #453
Currently, the 3D bookshelf experience in BiblioDrift relies on WebGL support. However, in some cases—such as older devices, low-end browsers, or disabled hardware acceleration the 3D rendering may fail or not load properly.
This leads to a blank or broken UI experience, which affects usability and first impressions of the application.
This feature introduces a fallback UI system to ensure a smooth and user-friendly experience even when 3D rendering is not supported.
Problem Statement
1.No graceful handling when WebGL is disabled or unsupported
2.Users may see blank screens or broken layouts
3.No feedback explaining why the 3D bookshelf is not loading
4.Poor experience on low-end devices or restricted browsers
Proposed Solution
Implement a fallback UI layer that activates automatically when:
WebGL is not supported
3D model loading fails
Rendering errors occur in library-3d.js
Fallback UI should include:
📚 A simple 2D bookshelf layout (static or minimal grid view)
💬 Friendly message like:
“Your browser can’t load the 3D bookshelf, but your library is still here ✨”
🔘 CTA buttons:
“Switch to Simple View”
“Retry Loading 3D Mode”
🎨 Minimal styling consistent with the cozy bookstore theme
Alternatives Considered
Showing a blank screen (rejected due to poor UX)
Forcing 3D mode only (not inclusive for all devices)
Additional Context
This improvement ensures:
Better accessibility across devices
Improved user experience on low-end systems
Reduced bounce rate due to loading failures
More polished production-level behavior
Hi, I would like to work on this issue under GSSoC'26.
I’m interested in contributing to the fallback UI implementation for unsupported WebGL environments and would appreciate it if you could assign this issue to me.
If WebGL is unsupported or throws an error, gracefully
show a 2D book cover image instead of a blank/broken canvas
Display a subtle message: "3D preview unavailable on your device — showing standard view"
Wrap the 3D renderer in a try/catch with an ErrorBoundary component (if React) to handle runtime failures
Why this matters:
Many users on low-end devices or older browsers will see a
completely broken UI without this fallback. This fix ensures
100% of users see something meaningful.
Hi @devanshi14malhotra! I'm a GSSoC '26 contributor and would love to work on this issue.
My Planned Approach:
Step 1 — WebGL Detection:
javascriptconst canvas = document.createElement('canvas');
const gl = canvas.getContext('webgl') || canvas.getContext('experimental-webgl');
const isWebGLSupported = !!gl;
Step 2 — Wrap 3D renderer in try/catch:
Catch any rendering errors from library-3d.js
Trigger fallback UI automatically on failure
Step 3 — Fallback UI includes:
Clean 2D grid/bookshelf layout as replacement
Friendly message: "Your browser can't load the 3D bookshelf, but your library is still here ✨"
Two CTA buttons: "Switch to Simple View" and "Retry Loading 3D Mode"
Styling consistent with BiblioDrift's cozy bookstore theme
Step 4 — Testing:
Test with WebGL disabled in browser settings
Test on mobile and low-end device simulation in DevTools
I'll keep the PR clean and focused. Please assign this to me!

Hi, I am a GSSoC 2026 contributor and would like to work on this issue.
I've reviewed how BiblioDrift uses 3D book rendering.
Here's what i will do:
Detection:
Fallback UI:
show a 2D book cover image instead of a blank/broken canvas
"3D preview unavailable on your device — showing standard view"
ErrorBoundarycomponent (if React) to handle runtime failuresWhy this matters:
Many users on low-end devices or older browsers will see a
completely broken UI without this fallback. This fix ensures
100% of users see something meaningful.
