[#3252] Removed the Renovate dry-run default from the CircleCI image and the no-op dashboard variable. - #3259
.circleci/update-dependencies.yml no longer sets RENOVATE_DRY_RUN on the renovate/renovate image, so a value set in the CircleCI project settings is the only value Renovate sees. With the variable unset, Renovate does a regular run, so the job needs no default and the renovate step is untouched. RENOVATE_DEPENDENCY_DASHBOARD is removed from both the CircleCI and GitHub Actions jobs, because it never had an effect.
The job comment said every variable on the image "can be overridden in the CircleCI project settings". CircleCI's precedence list ranks config environment keys above project variables and doesn't place the image-level key at all, so a project that set RENOVATE_DRY_RUN=true to test a run could still get a live run. Separately, renovate.json extends config:recommended, which turns the dashboard on, and Renovate applies repository config and its presets after environment config. The docs' "off by default, set RENOVATE_DEPENDENCY_DASHBOARD to true" sent readers to a switch that did nothing.
After merge, the dashboard is controlled by "dependencyDashboard" in renovate.json, and RENOVATE_PLATFORM, RENOVATE_AUTODISCOVER, RENOVATE_DEPENDENCY_DASHBOARD_TITLE and LOG_LEVEL stay set in the CircleCI file. Required variables and the GitHub Actions RENOVATE_DRY_RUN handling are unchanged.

Changes
CI
.circleci/update-dependencies.yml: removed RENOVATE_DRY_RUN and RENOVATE_DEPENDENCY_DASHBOARD from the image environment, and replaced the comment's override claim with a line about RENOVATE_DRY_RUN.
.github/workflows/update-dependencies.yml: removed the RENOVATE_DEPENDENCY_DASHBOARD env entry.
Docs
development/dependency-updates.mdx: removed the dashboard variable from both CI tabs and the "turns the dashboard off by default" sentence. The CircleCI tab says how to run a dry run and which file to edit for the other 4 variables. The dashboard section says how to turn the dashboard off.
development/variables.mdx: regenerated with ahoy update-docs after removing the variable from .utils/variables/extra/ci.variables.sh.
cspell.json: added AUTODISCOVER.
Fixtures
deps_updates_provider_ci_circleci, deps_updates_provider_ci_gha and deps_updates_provider_none: regenerated with ahoy update-snapshots.
Verification
The change removes the competing value, so the override no longer depends on CircleCI's precedence. The issue's manual check still applies after merge: set RENOVATE_DRY_RUN=true in a test project's environment variables, trigger the update-dependencies workflow, and confirm the Renovate log reports a dry run.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Documentation
Updated dependency update guidance to explain that the recommended Renovate configuration enables the dependency dashboard, and that it can be disabled in Renovate configuration.
Clarified how to run CircleCI in dry-run mode and where to change supported update settings.
Removed guidance for the retired dashboard environment variable.
Configuration
CI jobs no longer set dashboard or dry-run environment variables to false by default.

Walkthrough
CI configuration no longer sets Renovate dashboard defaults or a CircleCI dry-run default. Documentation updates the dashboard configuration guidance and explains how to test with RENOVATE_DRY_RUN=true.

The CI configuration removes dashboard defaults and the CircleCI dry-run default. The documentation removes the dashboard variable entries, describes setting RENOVATE_DRY_RUN=true for test runs, and states that config:recommended enables the dashboard and "dependencyDashboard": false disables it. The spelling list adds AUTODISCOVER.

Explanation
[#3252] The issue requires one of two outcomes when project variables do not override the image environment. The outcomes are: move the defaults out of the image environment, or reword the comment and docs. The PR takes both actions where needed. In .circleci/update-dependencies.yml, RENOVATE_DRY_RUN and RENOVATE_DEPENDENCY_DASHBOARD are removed from the image environment. With RENOVATE_DRY_RUN unset, a project value is the only value Renovate reads, so the project override works. The job comment no longer claims that all image variables can be overridden. The comment now describes RENOVATE_DRY_RUN. development/dependency-updates.mdx tells readers to set RENOVATE_DRY_RUN=true in project settings for a dry run. It also tells readers to edit the config file for RENOVATE_PLATFORM, RENOVATE_AUTODISCOVER, RENOVATE_DEPENDENCY_DASHBOARD_TITLE and LOG_LEVEL. The dashboard is now documented as controlled by "dependencyDashboard" in renovate.json. Two points differ from the earlier assessment. The current head does not add a ${RENOVATE_DRY_RUN:-false} shell default in the Run Renovate step, so the earlier basis no longer applies. The PR objectives also describe that step default. The current PR description says the step is untouched, and it governs. The issue's manual check (set RENOVATE_DRY_RUN=true, run the workflow, read the log) is non-coding and is not assessed. Limitation: no repository inspection tool was available. This result relies on the PR description and the change summary. The ignored fixtures were not inspected, and their absence is not treated as a gap.

Explanation
All listed changes relate to #3252 or support its fix. The .circleci/update-dependencies.yml change removes the two variables that the issue names and updates the job comment. The .github/workflows/update-dependencies.yml change removes RENOVATE_DEPENDENCY_DASHBOARD, which is the same no-op variable named in the issue. The PR states that it never had an effect, and the docs describe it across both CI tabs. Removing it keeps the two providers consistent. The docs changes in development/dependency-updates.mdx and the regenerated development/variables.mdx address the issue's documentation request. The removal of RENOVATE_DEPENDENCY_DASHBOARD from .vortex/docs/.utils/variables/extra/ci.variables.sh supports the regenerated variables page. The cspell.json addition of AUTODISCOVER supports the new docs wording. The regenerated fixtures reflect the same config changes. Their contents are in ignored_files and were not reviewed. The four remaining image variables are unchanged. No unrelated change was identified in the supplied evidence.
