Improve deployment stability by adding health check endpoints [] - #385
This also refactors the deployment to use Quart for the servers (consistent with the AcknowlEDG API server) so that developers do not need to maintain knowledge of multiple WebSocket server patterns.
Additionally, management of process pool jobs has been improved so that a task taking longer than they are allowed, responding to a review no longer being monitored, or similar, are properly cleaned up without negatively impacting other tasks.
In a similar "reliability" vein, caps have been added to ensure input data stays within reasonable bounds to preserve service health.
Finally, a number of cleanup passes have been taken to improve code quality.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Reviews can be queued while the publishing service is unavailable and are reconciled when it reconnects.
Added a shared service endpoint for health checks and optional webhooks, with updated configuration settings.
Runner connections now reconnect automatically, and oversized command output is capped while retaining useful output.
Bug Fixes
Improved handling of cancelled or failed subscriptions and requests, including avoiding replies when reviewer details are unavailable.
Added safeguards against oversized or excessive workspace and CI artifacts.
Invalid test-suite names are now rejected during configuration loading.
This pull request updates Forge publishing, serving, runner connections, and workspace input limits. It also changes reviewer-scoped request handling, suite-name validation, exception handling, and asynchronous cleanup utilities.
Changes: Forge service and publishing
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Shared serving and service configuration dev_tools/pylibs/edgacknowledg/forge/{serving.py,config.py,service.py,webhooks.py,local.py}, dev_tools/services/acknowledg-forge/{compose.yaml,README.md,run-dev-oss-repo.sh}, dev_tools/services/acknowledg-forge/tests/{conftest.py,test_containers.py,test_state.py}
Forge endpoints use shared Quart serving and health checks. The service bind and optional webhook setting replace the separate webhook bind. Container health checks and service dependencies use the health endpoints.
Stored review state and processor lifecycle dev_tools/pylibs/edgacknowledg/forge/db/store.py, dev_tools/pylibs/edgacknowledg/forge/processor.py, dev_tools/services/acknowledg-forge/tests/{fakes.py,test_state.py}
The processor stores sections before publisher sync and delists reviews before removing workspace data. Retry attempts can be started, refunded, and recorded separately.
The publisher serves reviews from stored records and queues sync, delist, and prune operations for a shared publishing task. New and updated tests cover reconnects, queued requests, delisting, and publisher health checks.
Per-process dispatchers take queued requests, match replies by request ID, skip abandoned queued work, and retry process startup.

The runner client maintains a reconnecting connection and bounds retained command output. The runner server uses a Quart blueprint, with tests for connection lifecycle and health checks.
Workspace, artifact, and CI input bounds dev_tools/pylibs/edgacknowledg/forge/{workspace.py,processor.py}, dev_tools/pylibs/edgtest/runtest/__init__.py, dev_tools/services/acknowledg-forge/tests/test_safety.py
Workspace processing limits sparse-checkout patterns, Git output, archive entries, and ZIP central-directory size. CI metadata and combined test-ID reads also have size limits.
Reviewer-scoped request handling

Handlers ignore requests without a reviewer ID and include the ID in replies for identifiable failures. The server forwards valid provider errors to the matching reviewer.
Subscription startup and cancellation cleanup dev_tools/pylibs/edgacknowledg/client/{__init__.py,websocket.py}, dev_tools/services/acknowledg-forge/tests/test_client_cancellation.py
Direct subscriptions start in the background. Subscription paths clean pending state and release acknowledged subscriptions after cancellation or failure.

Suite names are limited to ASCII letters, digits, underscores, and hyphens, with a 64-character maximum. Configuration and sparse-checkout generation validate names.
Selected handlers catch Exception instead of catching all exceptions.
Async task and subprocess cleanup dev_tools/pylibs/edgutil/__init__.py, dev_tools/tests/test_edgutil.py, dev_tools/typecheck-python.sh
The event-loop helper awaits task cleanup, including tasks started during shutdown. A new helper terminates subprocesses after a configurable allowance.
Two narrow runner-client failures remain: a callback error can disable the shared client, and a connection race can return the wrong error. The change is mergeable with owner awareness, though both fixes are worthwhile.

Background publication can now acknowledge an update before applying it. If application subsequently fails, published content can remain out of step with stored state until another change or reconnection. Existing isolation limits exposure, and the review did not establish a new authorization bypass.
Retained concerns
Medium · reliability · inferred: A queued publication can be acknowledged and its stored generation marked processed even when later application fails. For example, a subscription timeout discards the new handler, and the publication consumer logs and drops the failed item without scheduling another attempt. Reconnecting the downstream batch session restores registered handlers, not a registration already discarded. Recovery therefore depends on another review change or publisher-client replay. Unlike the previous apply-before-response flow, stored completion no longer establishes eventual publication after a transient application failure. This is a publication-ownership and recovery concern, not a verified authorization bypass.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
observed — The supplied deployment separates the credential-bearing service from the publisher's read-only review mount and the command runners. Containers retain dropped capabilities, no-new-privileges, read-only root filesystems, and resource limits. Publication drift concerns reviews served by that deployment; the inspected changes do not establish authority over another deployment or the host.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The webhook receiver verifies the received body before parsing and queueing events. Publication handler construction separately requires real directories under the configured review directory, with section roots and baselines contained under their home. Invalid directory construction is rejected locally.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Shared event-loop shutdown now drains cancelled tasks without immediately cancelling their cleanup again. A new subprocess termination helper allows graceful termination, then escalates to killing after an allowance. These changes support cleanup of resources that otherwise could outlive interrupted work.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Retain per-review desired publication state until application succeeds, retry transient application failures, and distinguish queue acceptance from applied completion. This would make recovery independent of a later edit or controlling-connection replay.

The new test covers only normal completion and the over-limit kill path. The cancellation path is the one that can hang. Add a test that cancels _communicate_bounded while yes runs. It must assert that the task finishes within a short timeout and that process.returncode is set. The test fails until the finally block kills the process.

Minor · Stability & Availability · Quick win
Do not let one bad message or output callback end the shared connection permanently.
All requests now share one connection, and any Exception from _read is treated as terminal. _read calls the caller-supplied pending.output(...) and json.loads / value.get(...) without a guard. Three triggers can raise there:
An output callback passed to run raises.
The runner sends invalid JSON.
The runner sends a non-object JSON value.
Each trigger ends _keep_connected and sets _failure. Every in-flight and later request then fails. The logged cause is gave up on the runner, not the callback error. The output callback of one run call can therefore disable the client for all other callers.
Isolate callback errors in _read. Fail only the affected pending.answer, and send a cancel so the command does not keep running on the runner. Treat an undecodable message as a lost connection, so the reconnect loop handles it.

Handle connection loss and explicit close while a request waits.
_connected.wait() can complete before _keep_connected clears the event and sets _connection to None. The request can then raise AssertionError, or AttributeError with python -O, instead of RunnerError.
The retry loop handles a lost connection, but not close(). close() cancels _running and clears the event without setting _failure, so the loop can wait until the request timeout. Signal closure as a terminal failure and wake the waiters.
