WIP: Spurious substitution failure for lambda naming template parameter in signature [GH #338] - #435
Previously, a lambda expression appearing in a function template signature
(or an enable_if attribute) that referenced an enclosing template parameter
failed template argument substitution. For example, with --c++20:
Fixed spurious template-argument substitution errors when lambdas in function-template signatures or enable_if expressions reference an enclosing template parameter. Previously rejected calls in these cases are now accepted.
Improved handling of template arguments and constraints during rescanning, including cases involving generic lambdas, parameter packs, and dependent expressions. This helps avoid incorrect evaluation or instantiation outcomes.
Template rescanning now uses shared parameter-binding operations. Lambda substitution checks body dependence and updates closure-class state. Constraint checks, enable-if substitution, and template argument substitution use deduced arguments in matching rescan scopes.
Changes: Template rescanning
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Rescan parameter binding and scope state src/scope_stk.h, src/scope_stk.c
Shared operations save and restore template-parameter bindings, deduced arguments, scope state, and variadic and pack-expansion state. Scope handling also supports matching generic-lambda contexts and deduced-argument lookup.
Lambda rescanning and closure state src/expr.c, src/il.c, src/pending_changes/gh-338-lambda-template-param.txt
Lambda and expression rescans use the binding operations. Lambda-body dependence determines closure-class and routine state. Expression rescanning resolves closure-class members and retains dependent expressions. The pending-change note describes issue #338 and its C++20 example.
Constraint and template argument substitution src/templates.c, src/exprutil.c, src/overload.c
Constraint and template-argument operations temporarily expose deduced arguments in matching scopes. Enable-if substitution runs in a rescan scope, and auto-type deduction checks dependent contexts during rescans.

edgcpp/compiler#339: This PR also addresses issue #338 by binding enclosing function-template parameters during lambda rescans.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 696c7
This change targets spurious substitution failures for lambdas in template signatures, but it still has defects that can cause undefined behavior or wrong results during lambda and constraint rescans. Fix the uninitialized source position, the declaration-only dependence gap, and the misplaced deduced-argument assignment before merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 696c7
The change remains within compiler semantic processing. Ordinary completion and substitution-failure paths explicitly restore temporary state, and no new privilege boundary was demonstrated. Nested binding and interrupted-compilation recovery remain partly unverified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — Source-supplied lambda tokens and template arguments reach the changed contract through existing compiler substitution paths. The demonstrated outcomes are semantic expressions and types, constraint acceptance, diagnostics, and substitution failure; no new external-authority sink was demonstrated in these paths.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The rescan-scope mechanism used by the changed callers preserves the original C++ access-checking context. Its paired pop performs deferred checks and restores the previous access depth. This is language-level access control, not an operating-system or tenant authorization boundary.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — Explicitly paired cleanup supports containment of ordinary substitution errors within the current semantic operation. It does not establish cleanup after compiler-wide interruption or isolation across reused compiler invocations; those recovery guarantees remain outside the completed source trace.

Use the saved member position for the lookup.
locator->source_position is uninitialized here. clear_locator copies it into loc, so this introduces undefined behavior during closure rescans. Use qualified_member_position, which was initialized from the saved operand. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Inspect declarations when checking lambda-body dependence.
If a lambda body contains only a dependent declaration, such as using U = typename T::type;, traverse_statement skips its stmk_decl entities. This helper can then return FALSE, and the caller clears the closure's nonreal flag even though the body still depends on T. Check declaration entities and their types before marking the closure real. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Store deduced arguments on the instantiation scope.
When SFINAE access checking is enabled, push_instantiation_scope_for_rescan pushes sck_function_access above the instantiation scope. This assignment then stores args on the wrong scope. Nested pack rescans read deduced_template_args from depth_innermost_instantiation_scope, so they can lose the concrete arguments and reject a valid specialization.
