🚀 Google Cloud BigQuery GA4 Multi-Touch Attribution Engine

Enterprise Event-Stream Stacking, 4-Model Revenue Allocation & SHA-256 PII Protection

Executive Summary & Client Problem Narrative

AuraMetric Media Group managed high-velocity paid acquisition channels across Google Ads, Meta, LinkedIn, and organic discovery. However, their legacy reporting infrastructure relied on fragmented CRM exports, siloed ad platform conversion dashboards, and basic single-touch reporting scripts.

This architecture suffered from three operational bottlenecks:

  • Duplicate Conversion Attribution: Ad platforms claimed conversion credit independently, resulting in an artificial 28% over-reporting of overall pipeline revenue.
  • Full-Table Scan Inefficiencies: Legacy analytics queries scanned raw GA4 export tables without partition pruning or repeated-record unnesting, incurring high BigQuery analysis costs.
  • Unprotected Customer Identifiers: Plaintext email addresses and user identifiers were processed across unmasked staging tables, violating enterprise data governance.

Lead Technical Consultant Samuel Chinwendu Agu at Elsamag IT Solutions engineered a standardized, multi-model attribution engine in Google Cloud BigQuery Standard SQL. The solution unnests raw GA4 event arrays, stitches cross-channel touchpoints chronologically, and calculates four deterministic attribution models side-by-side with cryptographic SHA-256 PII masking.

Attribution Model Formulations:

  1. First-Touch Attribution (FTA):
    • First touchpoint receives 100% of conversion credit: Weight = 1.0
    • Subsequent touchpoints: Weight = 0.0
  2. Last-Touch Attribution (LTA):
    • Final converting touchpoint receives 100% of credit: Weight = 1.0
    • Prior touchpoints: Weight = 0.0
  3. Linear Attribution:
    • Equal distribution across all touchpoints: Weight = 1 / N (where N is total touchpoints)
  4. Position-Based / U-Shaped Attribution:
    • Single Touch (N = 1): Weight = 1.0 (100%)
    • Two Touches (N = 2): First = 0.50 (50%), Last = 0.50 (50%)
    • Three or More Touches (N ≥ 3): First = 0.40 (40%), Last = 0.40 (40%), Middle = 0.20 / (N - 2) split equally across intermediate touchpoints
