Translation review for 2.1 🌍 (native-speaker verification welcome)

Hi everyone — and thank you again for making NetSpeedTray feel native: @VenusGirl (Korean), @CMTriX (Dutch), @ZeoNish (Russian), @anderlli0053 (Slovenian), @logounet (French), @coolvitto (Japanese), and now @raylolhue with @in2002-tw (Traditional Chinese). 💙

NetSpeedTray 2.1 is on the way, and it adds a fair bit of new UI plus two brand-new locales. Everything ships complete — new strings are filled in with AI-assisted translation so nothing is blank — but those haven't had a human eye yet, and that's exactly where a native pass helps most. This supersedes the 2.0 thread (#157), which I'm closing.

Whole locales that would love a full native pass:

• 🆕 Hebrew (he_IL) — our first right-to-left language. ~85% is an AI-assisted first pass (seeded by @rami123). Both the wording and the RTL layout are worth a look.
• 🆕 Traditional Chinese / Taiwan (zh_TW) — freshly added; a polish pass (especially full-width punctuation) is welcome.

New 2.1 feature strings (AI-assisted) — appearing as the 2.1 PRs land:

• Network identity — the Wi-Fi band / SSID indicator (BAND_DISPLAY_*, IDENTITY_MODE_*).
• The Location explainer — the one-time dialog when the SSID needs Windows Location (LOCATION_ONBOARDING_*). The most nuanced one to get right.
• Portable-update guidance — the "downloaded, copy it over your folder" message (UPDATE_PORTABLE_READY_*).
• Widgets-overlap nudge — the heads-up when the widget sits over the Windows Widgets/weather panel (WIDGETS_OVERLAP_NUDGE_*).

How to help: your locale is one file, src/netspeedtray/constants/locales/<locale>.json. A one-line correction PR is perfect and credited in the 2.1 notes. Keys must match en_US.json (parity test), and keep any {placeholders} verbatim.

No pressure on timing — anything before I tag 2.1 makes it in; anything after is a quick follow-up. 🙏 Thank you all!

Merci beaucoup, @logounet ! 🙏 I've opened #226 with your French update.

Most of it goes straight in — you filled in a whole batch of strings that were still showing in English: the network-identity and band-display settings, the Location-onboarding dialog, the free-float label, and the portable-update messages. That's a real improvement for French users. 🇫🇷

I kept a few of the existing strings and made small corrections so nothing breaks or reads oddly — flagging them here so you know what changed:

• Important fix: the portable-update message had {ready} translated to {prêt}. That's a placeholder the app fills in at runtime, so it has to stay {ready} verbatim or the message breaks — restored it.
• "Just show the band" → used bande (the Wi-Fi band) rather than groupe.
• Kept the French typography (the space before : ; ?, e.g. Couleur :), the accent on Opacité, Graisse for font weight, and Pic for "Peak".
• Left the brand names verbatim (GitHub Sponsors, Buy Me a Coffee).

The commit is credited to you, and this ships in 2.1.1. Merci encore ! 🎉

🌍 Strings for 2.1.3 are up — native review very welcome

Posting early so there's real time to review before the release, rather than the usual scramble. Everything below is already pushed to the fix/i18n-autodetect branch — work against that, not main.

Files: src/netspeedtray/constants/locales/<lang>.json. All locales share the en_US key order, so you can search by key name. Keep every {…} placeholder verbatim — CI checks this and will fail the build otherwise.

I've drafted all 13 already, so nothing is blocking — but they're my drafts, and I'd rather have yours. It appears under the Language dropdown in Settings and reads like Detected: 한국어 (대한민국). Short, but it's the first thing a user reads when checking whether the app picked their language correctly, so the phrasing matters more than the length suggests.

Why that key exists — and something worth knowing

Auto-detect has never worked on Windows. Not "was broken in 2.1" — never, in any release.

The app asked Python for the system locale, and on Windows that returns the C-runtime name (Korean_Korea) rather than the code our language files are named after (ko_KR). The lookup missed, and it silently fell back to English. German, Spanish and French happened to work purely by accident, because Python's own alias table carries those three CRT names. Everything else — Korean, Japanese, Russian, Polish, Dutch, Slovenian, Hebrew, and both Chinese variants — landed on English.

So if you've translated for this project and quietly wondered why a fresh install kept coming up in English unless you picked the language by hand: it wasn't you, and it wasn't your file. It was me. 😞 Thanks to @VenusGirl for reporting it in #234.

It now asks Windows for the display language directly. The new LANGUAGE_DETECTED_NOTE line is there so this is never invisible again — you can see at a glance what was detected instead of having to guess from the UI.

The bigger ask: there's a 2.1 backlog

While I was in here I ran the status report, and a fair number of 2.1 strings are still showing English. Now that auto-detect actually works, far more users will see their own language for the first time — which means these gaps are about to become a lot more visible than they have been.

Small addendum to the above — two existing English strings changed after I posted, so their current translations are now slightly stale. Both are on the same branch.

Nothing structural — same keys, no placeholders in either, and the existing translations still work. They're just missing the new sentences, so they'll read as slightly out of date rather than broken.

The reason is #237, which turned out to be a genuinely useful bug report. LibreHardwareMonitor removed the interface we read from in v0.9.5, so the link in that dialog has been pointing at v0.9.4 on purpose — but the text never said so, and anyone who followed it and sensibly grabbed "the latest release" instead got a silent no-op. That reporter also has a brand-new Intel Core Ultra whose CPU publishes no temperature sensor to LHM at all, which is worth being honest about up front rather than leaving people to conclude the app is broken.

So: LANGUAGE_DETECTED_NOTE is the only genuinely new string, and these two are refreshes. Still no rush. 🙏

Update — everything for 2.1.3 is now on main

All of it is merged, so work against main from here rather than the branch I linked earlier (that branch is gone).

Four more new keys landed since my post above, from two feature requests that shipped in the same release:

None of them take a placeholder except LANGUAGE_DETECTED_NOTE, which keeps {language}.

@VenusGirl — the arrow-colour ones are from your request (#168), now shipped. Worth a look at my Korean since it's your area. 🙏

Still no deadline. The release isn't tagged, and I'd rather wait for native review than ship my own guesses. The 2.1 backlog from my earlier post is unchanged and still the bigger prize if anyone has time for it. 💙
